Stop making me download your fucking app just to look at something I should be able to see in a browser
@heygeorgie THIIIIIIIIIIS.
@virtualwolf I just wanted to see some g**gle reviews and it only shows me literally ONE then makes me get the app
@heygeorgie Ughhhhh. Directly into the bin.
@heygeorgie
But the app is needed to pillage/colonize your personal device’s calendar, contacts, configuration, etc.

“This is why apps are ground zero for surveillance pricing. The web is an open platform, and web-browsers are legal to modify. The majority of web users have installed ad-blockers that interfere with the surveillance that makes surveillance pricing possible:

But apps are a closed platform, and reverse-engineering and modifying an app is a literal felony - *several* felonies, in fact.“

How is the world’s biggest boycott doing?

Eight years ago, I called ad blocking The Biggest Boycott in World History, because hundreds of millions of people were blocking ads online. (The headline came from my wife Joyce.) Then, a few days…

Doc Searls Weblog
@heygeorgie I really don't like smartphone applications that behave like HTML.
@kotaro as someone that's had to build it, i don't like when html is made to behave as an app @heygeorgie
@mensrea @heygeorgie There may indeed be such a situation.
I don't think that everything should be a web application either.
I would like to experience something dynamic and other than the purpose realized by Excel or IM, since it is implemented in a native application.
@mensrea @kotaro Yup I agree. And I think it’s also the case that some websites are *perfectly fine* and I enjoy the experience, and the app doesn’t offer additional features or benefits. So why would I use it?
@heygeorgie @kotaro there's a place for site, desktop apps, mobile apps, and hybrid apps. but there's a lot of pressure to use the wrong tools. apple for example tries to force apps, cause then they get to extract rent
@mensrea @heygeorgie Yes. Certainly the misguided domination by Apple contributed to the excesses of the 'dynamism' of the web.
@heygeorgie @mensrea @kotaro I hate to be forced to use apps too. Sometimes I'm in a hurry and just want to look at *one* single piece of info, without having to download an app. Sometimes I actually downloaded the app and think that the experience is worse. And sometimes I tried the app and discovered that, while the website is free, in the app I have to pay for almost everything (yes, Atlassian, I'm talking to you). I'm grateful for the "view desktop site" button, but this still annoys me
@sabrinaweb71 @heygeorgie @mensrea An app-based paywall, huh?
I would be too scared to go near it.
@kotaro @mensrea @heygeorgie sort of. I code as a hobby, so I use jira at a personal level, to keep track of what I want to write. In the website I can sort the issues as I like, with the oldest on top, because they will never be done if they stay at the bottom. In the app, even reordering the issues needs a module to be downloaded (and paid. *Monthly*.)
I use jira in the browser, with "show desktop site" on, but I still hate when it invites me to download the app instead
@sabrinaweb71 that's the business model, push everyone to subscriptions for everything @kotaro @heygeorgie
@mensrea @sabrinaweb71 @heygeorgie Jira. Isn't that exactly the kind of "project management application" that I personally don't see the point of implementing in a native app.
How is it any different from sharing a spreadsheet?
@kotaro @mensrea @heygeorgie I don't use it for project management, actually. I use it to keep track of features I would like to implement one day, I don't think I could add a long description on a spreadsheet
@sabrinaweb71 @kotaro generally called the "backlog" in industry
@mensrea @sabrinaweb71 Yes. Yes. In our country, we also have a project management software called "Backlog".
@sabrinaweb71 @mensrea @kotaro At some point I know I’ll get infuriated and just go back to a garbled mess inside a .txt in protest
@heygeorgie @sabrinaweb71 @mensrea Going back to the beginning, I am sure that engineers around the world will agree with your point of view.
Fortunately, thin content tools for "information sharing for information sharing's sake," such as project management software, are now being offered as SaaS.
Because they invade our devices, we need the dynamic and intense experience that only native applications can provide.
Using Adobe as an example, if all they want to do is work on generative AI, their web apps are enough to satisfy us.
@mensrea @kotaro @heygeorgie if they asked me to pay a subscription to keep my stuff on their servers, I'd understand, and it would make sense. If they asked me to pay *once* for a module that does what I want, it would make sense. But a recurring fee just to sort the things the way it makes sense to me... no, this is something I'm never going to pay, ever. Especially since I use it once a month or maybe less. And that "download the app for a better experience" feels too much like a joke to me
@sabrinaweb71 this mess really got going when adobe moved to the subscription model for everything. and now no business wants to move away from it. the only options you have are: pay, jump around free products until they change the pricing, or host your own with open source @kotaro @heygeorgie
@mensrea @kotaro @heygeorgie I think I will go for the 3rd option in the end. Since it's something I do as a hobby, ie when I have time for it, it's not worth paying too much
@sabrinaweb71 i've been running a nextcloud instance for years now for this and other reasons @kotaro @heygeorgie
@mensrea @sabrinaweb71 @heygeorgie That would be wise. We don't really know what they are selling, so "cloud spreadsheets" should only be self-hosted on FOSS.
On top of that, isn't it honest to make money just from server and domain management fees?
@mensrea @sabrinaweb71 @kotaro Yeah, I remember being pretty disappointed when Adobe moved to a subscription based model. 😔 I grew up in a household where we avoided subscriptions of any kind. I could realistically do a few things without needing the cloud.

@heygeorgie
Web site, venue, car park or literally anything: just download the app!”

Me: No.

@markmason When you have zero problems *just* doing it the way you’ve always done before their app even existed 🙂‍↔️
@heygeorgie the irony being most times it is just a webview anyway
@heygeorgie All this all day. And don’t nag me about your app or website while on hold. If I wanted to use it I wouldn’t be on hold.

@alison @heygeorgie by the time I have called you I have already:

1) Tried on the website
2) Tried on your app.
3) Tried any suggestions from consumer forums.
4) Considered alternative providers of whatever your service is.
5) Considered giving up on the service entirely.
6) Procrastinated at least a week.

Making a phone call is the last resort before I throw your product into the sea.

@alison @heygeorgie
(In one specific case i procrastinated an entire year. Skylight stopped responding to remote control. Emails and chat led to new remote being sent. Never got it to work. Stalled for a year before calling. After a few minutes the tech suggested sending someone out to climb on the roof and check. I said i would call back to schedule. Instead I climbed on the roof to discover a loose connection.)
@SkipHuffman @heygeorgie My instance was on Friday with CAA and wanted to talk to a person for instructions for underground parking and my mobility issues.
@heygeorgie You mean ads?
@GuyLateur Hah well that too. But barring me from seeing some textual information just because I don’t have the app is terrible. (I wanted to see more g**gle reviews about a restaurant and it only showed me literally one review.)
@heygeorgie
And when the app literally is just a wrapper around a webpage... Rage.
@heygeorgie @gemini6ice but then how will they syphon off data they have no business accessing?
@heygeorgie it's even worse when you download an app and then you have to go through hoops just to login or register 🫠
@heygeorgie A lot of medical offices (can't even call them "doctors" anymore because it's all fucking concierge and membership) are like that.
@drwho I don’t mind seeing medical results on an app/making appointments etc. but some of the apps are sooooo shit.

@heygeorgie They're terrible. Can't even hook into the mobile's on-board calendar to register the appointment, that has to be done manually!

Carbon Health is terrible for this.

@heygeorgie and then the app ends up being an "inner" browser. Which would describe a ton of apps, maybe most.
But hey, at least it will send you useless notifications, drain your battery and snoop on your life.

@moshtodon
Throwback to MMS days — sadly even this "wasn't invented here" 😂
@heygeorgie
@heygeorgie Especially when all the app does is launch a restricted browser to an existing website.
@heygeorgie same, but in my case I don't think its an option, I ordered some AliExpress clones of the apple airtag (that plastic thingy that is basically just a gps) and ofc they need a proprietary app :')
@heygeorgie
I get it. I hate when I am asked to install an app to do something.
