“We see you haven’t voted yet. Your voting record is public,” a recent mailer to Texas Republicans says. “Your neighbors are watching and will know if you miss this critical runoff election. We will notify President Trump if you don’t vote. You can’t afford to have that on your record.”

The thing about a "strong" "leader"? Eventually you'll be the one targeted when things get desperate enough. No matter how much you think you are the kind of person who wouldn't be.

The whole mentality behind this speaks to some notion that Trump supporters have about being rewarded, or favored by participating in the movement?

Maybe that's why some participate in rallies and advertise their allegiance?

and to advertise threats to others in their communities that weak allegiance is grounds for punishment
@futurebird well sure, he'll make them rich like he is! …someday

@futurebird

I think it's more nefarious than that. There are folks that have made Trumpism their identity, and this plays against the fear of being ex-communicated from the group.

People choose death over being ostracized, and the folk running this know that well. Being part of the larger group and showing allegiance is why so many look past logic and reason and continue to support the group.

@jrconlin

Yes, their whole thing is obedience for the in-group, and punishment (or death) to the out-group.
Donate to MAGA today, and you too might not be left behind for the rapture … er election.

I think you hit it.

@futurebird you’re not wrong, but this tactic didn’t start with Trump. I don’t know when the first research came out that social pressure was a strong GOTV motivator, but 20 years ago when I was still doing campaigns the big GOTV operations were sending similar letters.
@futurebird
Oh my gosh. Despite the quote marks, I didn’t think that was an actual quote.
@futurebird threats seem to be the primary way fascists and the GOP control people. It's part of their nature. I suspect threats are how GOP Congressional leaders have always gotten near-unanimous cooperation from their party on votes.

@futurebird Leapords, faces, etc.

It's obvious in hindsight. People like Trump come to power by exploiting people's fears, and use fear to maintain their power. Why *wouldn't* they do this?

@futurebird This is called leopards eating your face. It was all cool as long as it was happening to all those folk over there that you didnt care for or didnt like. Now that its happening to *you*....

This is what happens when you dont stand on consistent principles. Dems are also guilty of this in different ways.

@futurebird
They do that shit all the time with fundraising, too.

"Donate and we'll tell Trump you're a TOP SUPPORTER!"

"Trump looked at the list of donors and asked why YOU aren't on it."

The fact that it actually works says everything you need to know about his base.

@jargoggles @futurebird So, I've been keeping a running log of the texts and emails I get from the trump campaign (and its surrogates) for quite a few years now. It’s… a real picture into the psychology of a movement, because they're hyper-optimized to track what generates cash.
@futurebird if this isn’t textbook voter intimidation, we need to rewrite the textbook.
@futurebird I'd say that voter intimidation is illegal, but that clearly doesn't dissuade Trump
@futurebird
Ahhh, is that why some Democratic postcard campaigns include
"who you vote for is private; whether you vote is public record" as part of the text?

@futurebird Threatening voters with retribution for not voting for Trump is still organized criminal intimidation/ coercion & voter tampering, right?

The Gop is desperate, so they turn to Fear.

@futurebird Something would be very wrong if I WASN'T in trouble.
@futurebird sounds like desperation from insecure people ( who apparently have insecure ballot secrecy )
