I’m calling it now: the slop feedback loop is going to ruin the Internet.

Look at the second toot in this thread: Google’s AI Assistant got the gasoline recipe from AI generated content.

We’re playing the shittiest game of telephone ever.

@chockenberry ugly undertones of the sorcerer's apprentice. Now with more gasoline, I guess.
@chockenberry @JoeUchill Gonna be amazing when someone sues Google or Microsoft for damages after they follow some shitty AI instructions for ingesting gasoline or other such stupidity.
@gedeonm @chockenberry @JoeUchill nah, they will just claim "section 230" as if it's some lawsuit avoiding incantation and the judge will agree.
@favretto @chockenberry @JoeUchill Didn’t you hear? Conservatives are gonna kill section 230. Gonna be great!
@gedeonm @chockenberry @JoeUchill
Did we just prove Trump ("maybe we can ingest bleach") is actually AI????

@chockenberry there's only one solution: mentat training.

https://dune.fandom.com/wiki/Mentat

Mentat

A Mentat was a profession or discipline that was developed as a replacement to the computers and thinking machines following the Butlerian Jihad that banned the creation of machines in the human mind's image, just as the Spacing Guild and the Bene Gesserit took up similar functions. Gilbertus Albans displayed the first cognitive thinking and computer-like calculation capacity necessary for a Mentat, and founded the Order of Mentats. In the aftermath of the Butlerian Jihad, computers and other fo

“ I take comfort in knowing that it will be impossible for “AI” tools—here on out—to differentiate between human-made and machine-generated content, thereby inevitably feeding on their own regurgitations. It’s already happening, of course.”

Building a Stronger Web Without AI

@louie Yeah, I’ve been thinking the same thing for awhile now. Still, it’s shocking to see this prediction come true.
@chockenberry I think while it might ruin search in its current form, I don’t think it will ruin the web. The web is effectively infinite.
@chockenberry @JoeUchill Reminds me of an old Eliza app back in the System 6 days that allowed running two Eliza instances talking to each other (and literally talking using MacinTalk as well). It has hilarious but at least didn’t provide deadly suggestions to the less sharp users.
@chockenberry Google AI Darwin Award any day now. Lawsuit to follow.
@chockenberry - I'm just hoping that it goes the way of crypto and web3 and cuecat and Microsoft Tag, Flash, Divx and all the other obviously fucking stupid things that all the dumbfuck upper management bought into and then quietly stopped mentioning.

@chockenberry I'm borrowing this quote to use when I see fit and it's a very fitting quote;

"We’re playing the shittiest game of telephone ever."

@chockenberry “Slop Loop” TM Hockenberry 2024

@chockenberry I'm all for it to be honest. The only way to prevent scraping of data for AI LLMs is to ensure that it said information can't be trusted.

Google is worse than it was now that it uses AI? Use a service that doesn't use AI.

@chockenberry
I've said before tech seems to be perpetually in a gold rush.

I'm going to revise that to alchemist's fever dream. It looks valuable, it looks capable, but it's just poisonous lead with a coat of paint.

@chockenberry Every body knows "Garbage in, garbage out."

But it seems like many people don't want to accept "Garbage out, garbage in." I've been calling it the anti-singularity, where AI spam increasingly makes it harder and slower to make any progress in any field.

Our only true protections are going to be Peer Review.

I like this. It captures what's going on here perfectly.

@chockenberry the term slop seems to have stuck.
@chockenberry now? OK. I'm not sure that you can ruin what has been ruined for years.
@chockenberry
I love this. It’s like “The Robot Centipede”
@chockenberry Yeah, I’ve been describing AI as a self-destruct for the web. I honestly think it is possible that we’ll have to start over because this stuff is like spilling massive amounts of PFAS. We’re never going to be able to clean it all up.

@chockenberry it was always doomed for this to happen, I could predict it. I do not understand how these tech bros didn’t….except if the use case they are throwing us is an output red herring/con.

I think the primary purpose is taking gathered data for surveillance to process. Along with selling/wasting fossil fuels.
I think its main purpose is as a weapon.
Just as crypto was really a weapon.
