Why doesn't #Tor use an #opensource #searchengine such as #searx by default?

Does a pretty good job & has 80+ instances available at:

https://searx.space/ πŸ˜€

That should ensure a better uptime & reliability than #duckduckgo & of course - way better everything - than #bing πŸ‘

Tell me more about searx's rewards program. What rewards can you get?

@505fred
It's #free & #opensource - don't think something like that exists, you could start your own instance with rewards though πŸ˜€

@madeindex @torproject I just used one of the instances with a test search of β€œribbons and bows”, and actually got a longtime question answered! I’ve been wondering about the history of bows for quite some time πŸ˜ŠπŸŽ€
@madeindex SearX is good for individual installs (I'm using it everyday), but as a default for a widely used software it would kill the chosen instance (or make it banned by the search providers).
Hence it would require manual instance selection from trusted people (or a more complex decentralized reputation mechanism), load balancing, etc.
There are projects of search engine using open or distributed indexers (Stract, Pearsproject, meta-press) but it's more experimental.

@tuxmain Thank you for explaining :)

#Stract seems incredibly fast, & @pears sounds like a great project + is even on the #fediverse! πŸ‘

Couldn't find meta-press 🀷

Excited to see some #opensource #search alternatives to #Bing & #Google! 😊
