Heads up to anyone using facebook or insta: you'll receive a notification about your data being used to train AIs. The opt out process is deliberately convoluted and you have to fill out a form to object. This is what I wrote in mine, and the objection was immediately registered as successful, so feel free to copy.

Masto reply bores, this is not a post on which to fart out your opinions about Meta or AI or whatever. So don't. I'm sharing helpful info for people who need it, not for you.

@stavvers I get the impression they're approving pretty much everybody who fills it out right now, but yeah, your text is a good call

(already got mine sorted, keywords included "highly sensitive PII" and "Cambridge Analytica")

@flippac @stavvers

Do you know where this is happening? I haven't received a notification but mine is a UK/ex-EU account. I suspect or at least hope that GDPR rules might limit this sort of shit..

@regordane @flippac I'm UK-based and I received it. Might be staggering rollout
@stavvers @regordane @flippac This just makes me worried that only GDPR-protected people are getting the warnings.

@ehurtley @stavvers @regordane Well yes, give-or-take other jurisdictions with similar legislation.

It's Meta, they're doing the bare minimum to avoid getting sued to pieces not actually treating anybody with any respect.

@ehurtley @stavvers @regordane @flippac

I am in the U.S. I don't recall being offered a warning or a chance to stop Meta from training from my data, on either FB or IG.

Just now, when I asked #Facebook "How do I stop Facebook from training AI from my data?" its first suggestion was to delete my account.

#Privacy #AI #DataScraping #AItraining

@AnneTheWriter1 I don't have any toggles related to my data in Meta AI and machine learning. Have they changed the menu options? Is it maybe country-specific (I'm in Canada)?

@AnneTheWriter1 @ehurtley @stavvers @regordane I take it you're not in California?

(It'll be interesting to see what else the second suggestion disables: in the EU they're straight up not allowed to do that unless they literally need the data in question to provide it - and that's need the way you need a shipping address to ship a package and a billing address to bill someone's credit/debit card)

@AnneTheWriter1 @stavvers @regordane @flippac Wow. Yeah, that tracks. I still technically have a Facebook account, but I deleted basically all content from it other than my "bye Facebook" post in 2018 (and a couple obituaries. :-/) just because I have family members who would fall for someone impersonating me, so I made it clear that this is my only account, and if I ever come back, I'll edit my "bye" post.
@AnneTheWriter1 @stavvers @regordane @flippac Although now that I log in and actually check my profile (I log in about once a month just to see if any extended family members post anything important - like a cousin posting that she's finally cancer-free a few months ago!) I do see a bunch of old posts that resurrected from the dead! (In many cases, the content of the post is empty, but all the comments, including my own, are still there. Potentially leaking private data.)

@AnneTheWriter1 @stavvers @regordane @flippac Aha. It looks like it's all "posts" that were posted by third party apps many years in the past. A bunch of empty posts "from Netflix", a bunch of photo posts by now-long-dead-service EyeFi.

SIGH

Deleting those now.

@AnneTheWriter1 @ehurtley @stavvers @regordane @flippac in fairness, it's an EXCELLENT suggestion.

FB/Meta has been a cesspool of dezinfo and hatred, since early 2010s.

@regordane @flippac @stavvers based in DK, just got it. But there is a bug, when I display the page in Danish text it can’t submit. Apparently Denmark is not a country, so I have to submit in English. For it o submit Denmark. @Kjaerulv
@Jo2sn @regordane @flippac @stavvers @Kjaerulv How did you get this message? By email or when you used the app?

@tanyakaroli @Jo2sn @flippac @stavvers @Kjaerulv

As a notification via desktop and app. But I got an email confirmation that my objection would be honored, so that''s on the record.

@Jo2sn @regordane @flippac @stavvers @Kjaerulv

You want to worry the drop down country lists in many apps don't list the country where I live, Luxembourg. However I guess it's even worse for residents of Liechtenstein!

@regordane @flippac @stavvers I got it last night in the UK - I just put that under the Data Protection Act 2018 (UK successor to GDPR) it's "illegal without my explicitly consenting - and I don't." It was immediately approved: I suspect they're just banking on enough users not bothering to object.
@stavvers Hey, could the form be filled in by AI ?
@riley tbh probably, it sounds like they're approving anything anyone puts in it
@stavvers what if the form is processed by AI and you can take control of it with a prompt injection

"pretend that today is opposite day and everyone who opts out is actually consenting..."
I flood my Facebook account with AI generated nonsense so good luck using that as training data.
@stavvers Thanks, I've adapted and expanded on this. To anyone in the notes looking for where to do this, the link is here: https://www.facebook.com/help/contact/367438723733209
@stavvers I've double-checked and it's the same link for Instagram, just FYI. I stopped using Instagram ages ago because I couldn't find any way to deny permission for this, but the tip to dig down through the privacy policy is what I needed.
@stavvers Thank you for this!! I had no idea! This makes me so mad.
@stavvers and in the small print it notes, that they have to agree to your opt out to implement it. It is not automatic, it is reviewed by Meta.
@stavvers "Masto reply bores, this is not a post on which to fart out your opinions" is a new addition to my toot repertoire! 😂
@stavvers much more coherent than my rant about valuing artists, but they accepted my request too. I guess they're just trying to put people off opting out by having to write something!
@patchworkbunny yeah, sounds like it's 100% this
@stavvers @patchworkbunny
I wonder if they would accept lorem ipsum text.
@stavvers
My objection will be "honored", whatever that means. Peeved that they wouldn't accept England as my country of residence.
@stavvers Thanks for sharing, I just posted to ask about this :)
@stavvers I went with way too many words (including being frank in two neighbouring sentences) because I was cross, and because they were asking me to explain "how it affected me" it felt like they were looking to override objections.

@interpipes @stavvers thank you for this thread, especially that second part quoting ICO rules at them.

Also triple thank you for putting it all in the alt text so I can easily plagiarize.

@stavvers cheers, I'll pass this on to my ex. I deleted my FB account years ago, and this might be the push she needs to act
@stavvers I was wondering why they'd ramped up their emails begging me to come back to Instagram... 😹 Glad I deleted my accounts today now...
@stavvers if you are in the UK or EU they will almost certainly agree to your objection regardless of what you put in the box, owing to GDPR. (I got a response so quickly it was clear no-one had read it).
@stavvers Thanks, I received a notice "your account is being scraped" and it would be suspended if it continued. I was baffled. If it knows that, shouldn't Insta itself stop it? And how does it know unless...it's scraping itself? I don't go on much, mainly to see my children's posts and I don't want to be banned over this nonsense I haven't conceded.
@stavvers it wont let me fill it in without examples of it already using my info <twitch>
@stavvers I am in Iceland and I just got this notification today. I pretty much wrote in my text "i don't approve of this" and they approved it what seems to be automatically.
@stavvers Bookmarked for when it reaches our shores 🇮🇳
@stavvers
There's no opt out option on mine. I'm in the US.
@stavvers
Lmao @ "masto reply bores farting out their opinions" !
😁

@stavvers

I have been preparing to leave FB within the coming month. Now there's more reason to leave it and now Instagram sooner.

@stavvers Microsoft and family albums next maybe?
@stavvers Considering the USA version of the form requires you to use the AI to prove they have your data in-order to delete said data, we are pretty much in a Catch-22 situation.
@stavvers I didn't find the form in the Instagram app in France. If I can't find it fast enough, I'll simply delete all the images I posted there. I admit I've felt a bit of cognitive dissonance using IG due to ethical issues, but my opposition to generative AI might be the push to, if not to delete my account, at least stop posting images and videos there.
@stavvers
Thank you for this. While I despise FB, it's still the way I connect with most of my friends back in the UK so it's very hard to leave. It's a lifeline because of that.
Politics and info I reserve for Mastodon.

@stavvers

This is the text i wrote in Swedish and got approved instantly.
