The simplest tasks on iPadOS are either incredibly difficult and time-consuming, or they’re so unintuitive that even a 25-year Apple veteran can't figure them out. Frankly, neither reflects well on iPadOS.
@snazzyq the iPad inherently suffers from its own identity.
💀 hollyyyyy— ain't no way apple made it THIS unintuitive. this is the best explanation of how bad iPad can be hahahaha. Apple has got to do better

@snazzyq @tekphloyd I understand that Apple positions the iPad as a productivity tool, but I've found nothing that's easier on my iPad than on my Mac.

I bought an iPad Air 5 + pencil for creative use when not at my desk, but everything feels like a compromise. I found myself saying “I will do it when I get back to my desk”.

@snazzyq Just drag the Freeform icon from the dock while you are in Freeform. Voilà: second window. 🙂
@dgavin @snazzyq Thanks for sharing. This solves it. Works with all apps (at least the ones I tested)!
@snazzyq I believe you can drag the window using the trackpad after it is created as well.
@snazzyq @stroughtonsmith I feel the spotlight "hack" is more like a side-effect, or bug, than intended behavior haha
@gklka Pont en, pont tegnap :D agyfasz

@snazzyq
Apple recommends an easy fix for this:
Step one: Connect the Display to the Mac Studio
Step two: Open Free form there.
Step three: There's no step three.

Optional Step: Throw the iPad in the trash.

@snazzyq The worst thing about that video is that if you had that Freeform window in a stage on the iPad it also wouldn’t show you that bar when you tap the three dots. When using StageManager on either display the three dots just don’t have the power they do in fullscreen or split-view + slideover
@snazzyq I don’t know why Apple has disabled some things when in stage manger mode, they made it ridiculously convoluted. The only way I can find from within stage manager to add a new window is by long pressing the app icon, Show all windows, and then the plus button appears in the top left.
@snazzyq I can’t be sure, but I’m willling to bet the “solution” is actually a bug…
@snazzyq Yes, it’s too complicated. However, you almost got it: on the external display, when you tap the 3 dots and select ‘Add Another Window’, you tap on the Freeform icon and you’ll get your second window, which you then can move to the iPad. Hth!
@snazzyq Stop trying to use your #iPad like a #Mac and use it as the device it is intended. Its intentionally limited because Jos and John wants you to have both and use both at the same time.
@snazzyq @stroughtonsmith Yes, this definitely needs to be fixed. I really appreciate how you walked through the whole process. Hopefully someone from Apple is paying attention.

@snazzyq
Tbh: I always have difficulties to work really productive on such limited systems even when I am tech savvy in general.

And "it just works" is just a marketing gag or from someone who doesn't do actual work on that device.

@snazzyq Maybe it would work better if you treat it as its own thing? I have an iPad and zero problems with it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

@snazzyq Apple has always had issues with Windows. </joke>

But seriously, the Window Manager in Windows 7 still puts MacOS/IPadOS to shame, and that came out over a decade ago. And the W11 Window Manager is even better!

What's going on in Apple land where window management isn't a priority?

@snazzyq
This is INCREDIBLE. We already have window management (kinda) figured out! It should never require this much brain power to open a second window of an app
@snazzyq @scriptingosx Stage Manager definitely needs some work, but I think the bigger issue here is trying to use an iPad as if it were a mini MacBook with a touch screen. If you have that expectation, you’re going to be disappointed, because that’s not what it is. (Even though Apple isn’t great at messaging what it’s best used for and makes it seem like a mini MacBook.)
