I asked Google "who ruined Google" and they replied honestly using their AI, which is now forced on all of us. It's too funny not to share!

@nixCraft

Skip the AI. Go over to More, click the Web drop-down. Almost like the old Google.

Or use DDG, of course.

@mwl that is a wonderful tip. thanks :)
@mwl thanks for the tip! I mostly use DDG or occasionally searXNG, but the results vary widely with the latter. @nixCraft
@mwl @nixCraft
Can you explain?
Not following the tip.
@AG100pct @nixCraft duck duck go
@mwl
Thank you, but that part I got.
What I did not understand was:
"Go over to More, click the Web drop-down. Almost like the old Google."
@AG100pct do a search. There's a menu for images, shopping, etc. Click more
@AG100pct this is desktop, don't know about mobile
@mwl
Ah, the hamburger menu.
@mwl @nixCraft DuckDuckGo also has a LLM now & it's turned on by default. I have to turn it off every time I use a different computer at work.
@nixCraft When the AI is more honest than the company that produces and offers the AI to consumers...
@enigmatico @nixCraft
It might have been helped :)

@richlv

Is this a thread in reddit to steer google answer? 🤣

Can you post the link? I want to upvote

@lgsp @enigmatico @nixCraft

Sure, here: https://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/1cbjogh/the_man_who_killed_google_search/ .

On the plus side, Google isn't completely messed up yet - in xitter there would be a meltdown and everybody's top priority would be to kill any posts, search results etc related to this =)

@nixCraft

Almost makes me think AI might offer decent info after all.

@nixCraft somehow im in Minnesota, not using a VPN, and not using an enterprise account, and yet I'm not getting the AI BS.

Woo hoo!!

@AverseABFun @nixCraft Like @AverseABFun haven't seen any of this AI stuff yet. I guess they're rolling it out slowly. But I'm sure it's coming.
@nixCraft the inset image of him dressed as a clown is a bit on the nose.
@nixCraft you are falling for it. How do you know this AI overview is actually factual? I mean, it accidentally is but you are falling for it. Careful out there.
@nixCraft Yandex for stuff Google won't show you. Heck, they even had Visual Search even before Google implemented it.
@nixCraft growth metrics! So important!
(if you are an executive and your compensation is primarily in stock)

@nixCraft

now when alphabet inc has good experience of monetizing and spoiling search, next one is android. will android become alphabet inc's new swamp.

@nixCraft

Classic enshittification.

@nixCraft I frankly don't care. Google is dead to me. Only reason it's still lingering around is because of Android phone...
@nixCraft ai has been taking over many things, some good and some bad. It’s get kind of annoying, to me anyway.

@nixCraft

I think it's @Mojeek

They are the only (european) competitor to google because they have their own index, and take care of privacy :)

@itchi5 @nixCraft @Mojeek
Another good EU (FR) alternative is Qwant.
https://www.qwant.com/

Go to Settings. Turn off:

palais des 40 colonnes aespahan – Qwant Search

Fast, reliable answers and still in trust: Qwant does not store your search data, does not sell your personal data and is hosted in Europe.

@nixCraft

So Raghavan screwed it up?

Another example of an accountant running things.

@nixCraft IMO Prabhakar probably did not ruin Google search, but he was most certainly a cultural contributor to its downfall. The quote probably comes from this: https://www.wheresyoured.at/the-men-who-killed-google/
The Man Who Killed Google Search

Check out this week's Better Offline podcast, "The Man That Destroyed Google Search," available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and anywhere else you get your podcasts. UPDATE: Prabhakar has now been deposed as head of search, read here for more details. This is the story

Ed Zitron's Where's Your Ed At

@nixCraft reminds me of when Siri said the Lumia 900 was the best smartphone.

I wonder if Google will interfere with the response in a similar fashion.

Apple Changes Siri's Embarrassing Nokia Favouritism

Nokia accuses Apple of bias after Siri no longer says that the Lumia 900 is the best smartphone ever

@nixCraft and if you ask why, the AI mentions that "Google ... will delete inactive Google accounts ... unless they are used for something illegal." !!
@nixCraft Google wasn’t ruined until 2019? That’s the real takeaway tbh.

@nixCraft

It started going downhill 20 years ago.

But, because not enough people were paying attention, it was not widely reported.

It also demosrates that the corpus that google is using does not go back far.

There was an article a few years ago about the "people who are the algorithm". a large number of Minimum-wagish young people primarily located in the Midwest USA would prioritize the (english) search results pages. For example searching for "red car" returns a category page of 100 sites, and some young person decides what shows up #1 - 100. It's not likely one searches a "live database". The main issue with this is most of the time the worker can't afford the products they are prioritizing, so how would they know which red car is #1, 2, 3, etc. I suppose big G is using that "training" for it's AI thingy. But the most interesting thing about this is that companies have spent crazy money on "SEO" gurus and crap. which makes the expense meaningless in that regard lol.
@nixCraft and to many spam in CEO from blog or big company in e-commerce
@nixCraft That is perfect, I love it. 😄

@nixCraft
Hmmm.
Google search was seriously degenerating from prior to 2016.

I used to reseach metadata on obscure LPs.
Google search just got worse and worse and worse.
