Like many people, I had my Apple ID locked last night, and it was a big hassle trying to get it unlocked and working again.

One tip - when you go through all the rigmarole to get it going again, one thing that doesn't switch on by default is receiving iMessages or FaceTime calls via your Apple ID. So, like me, you will probably be missing messages until you reenable those in Settings. Also, if you send somebody a new iMessage it will default to your phone number which may not be what you want.

@jamesthomson how did you become aware that your AppleID had been locked? Also (calls for speculation), do you think this glitch has anything to do with how the AppleID is being “replaced” soon?
@scottearle I got an “Update your Apple ID" message in Settings on every single device, and when I tried to log in it said my account had been locked for security reasons.
@jamesthomson ok then it looks like I escaped then. I was wondering if I might have been affected but had not yet seen it
@jamesthomson @scottearle same yesterday. For no apparent reason. Could it be some sort of a glitch on their servers? The unlocking process failed a couple of times with server errors.
@scottearle And, I'm not sure. I suspect it's more likely that Apple did a software update of some kind on the back end, and that broke everything. As far as I heard, they were just doing a rename of Apple ID, so I don't think that alone would have done it.
@jamesthomson yeah, it does sound like it should just be a renaming of everything. But “software update of some kind on the back end” on a Friday sounds like a recipe for disaster
@jamesthomson @scottearle now I’m worried. I’m responsible for rolling out a new unified login process for our customers in a couple of weeks and I was already feeling nervous about screwing something up. At least we don’t have as many users as Apple!
@mo @scottearle Yeah, even 1% of Apple users would be a large headache!
@mo @jamesthomson just don’t do it on a Friday! :)
@scottearle @jamesthomson it’s being done on a Thursday. I was sure I’d requested a Tuesday!
@mo @jamesthomson Tuesday or Wednesday are the correct days. Gives you time to postpone to the next day if you need to
@scottearle @jamesthomson fortunately it’s all in production right now and all tests are giving good results. We just need to flick the switch on the big day!
@mo @jamesthomson that’s when you find the problems!

@scottearle @jamesthomson What happened to me is almost exactly 7:30PM New York time, my iPad got a message that a new Mac had been added to my trusted iCloud devices.

It was my Mom's MacBook Air that I had used briefly with my own (local) account in last August when she first got it.

One wonders if something went horribly wrong and they had to revert to an old AppleID backup?

@jamesthomson Thanks, useful reminder!
@jamesthomson Oh, is *that* why my iMessage was complaining?
@jamesthomson thanks, I hadn’t noticed this! Ditto for FaceTime.
@jamesthomson It's because of shenanigans like this that I have an alternative to Google mail. If they should disable my Google account, I want some alternative to still exist while I work around it. As we all know, Google doesn't care and likely won't have any way to contact them if that should happen. At least with Apple, you had some sort of recourse.
@jamesthomson FaceTime too, for me. Which is important because I have little ones with iPads, an AppleID, but no phone number.
@jamesthomson Did you end up having to change either the ID or the password to get it working again? I sure hope not.
@gedeonm @jamesthomson I was forced to change my password but it did give me the option to stay signed-in on devices that already were, so I didn’t have to re-enter it. That said, the suggested password didn’t save to Keychain properly…
@gedeonm I had to change the password and re-login _everywhere_
@jamesthomson Ugh. Thx.

@gedeonm @jamesthomson for me I did not change password at all (somewhere in settings it shows I changed it in 2019, which might be interesting if people have older passwords than that).

But I did have to re-log-in in many apps on Mac. Music, AppStore, GameCenter Only once relogin on iOS.

@gedeonm @jamesthomson On modern MacOS Sonoma, the iCloud login is clearly a jenga tower and it's not clear what's at the bottom but it is either App Store app or Music app (and I guess both for various tasks)

Books, Podcasts, TV seem to rely on one or the other (prolly Music) to operate the credentials.

@gedeonm @jamesthomson Why isn't it all in Settings? Well I probably mused about it a decade ago … iTunes is Apple's WindowsXP …
@jamesthomson I was wondering what happened with my Apple ID. How bizarre.
@jamesthomson My Account was not locked BUT I do have the "new iMessage will default to phone number" issue since about 2 days and it took some time to figure out whats going on.
@jamesthomson I was not aware that this was a widespread issue, so this eases my mind quite a bit that it wasn’t just me
@jamesthomson thanks for the iMessage / FaceTime tip! Hadn’t spotted that in all the shenanigans.
@jamesthomson I think I avoided this, but some of the discussion around the reset process has prompted me to review my Stolen Device Protection settings, particularly my “familiar locations”, to try to ensure a smoother process in the event of Apple’s mess-up…
@jamesthomson I got hit with the same thing. FYI it also revoked and erased all App Specific Passwords I had. Didn’t discover that until this morning when Apps started requesting new passwords.
@WarnerCrocker @jamesthomson just noticed that myself...very frustrating.
@WarnerCrocker @jamesthomson After reading so many posts on this subject I’m thankful to have dodged this bullet.
@paulc @jamesthomson Glad you did. Wish I had. Just goes to prove that at any moment we’re all at the mercy of what happens on the back end with our computing lives.
@WarnerCrocker @jamesthomson and since this happened to so many Mac experts we know it isn’t “You are holding it wrong”. I wonder if I was saved because when this happened to all of you I was involved in social activities that kept me off my devices, a rare occurrence.

@paulc @jamesthomson Speculation founded on my ongoing iCloud issues and experiences trying to resolve those. Apple is continually making tweaks on the back end as it roles out new Betas and official releases. From what I’ve been able to learn from dealing with Apple Support so much depends on which servers things are pointing to.

Apple thinks they’ve resolved issues but then discover they haven’t when the earlier problems resurface again. /1

@paulc @jamesthomson My hunch is that as they are preparing for new OS releases in this cycle (due soon I believe) as well as what will come out of WWDC in June they turned on some changes that affected some, but not all, in the same way my issues continue to surface and resurface (note I’m not the only one experiencing those but we’re in that “small number of users” category that doesn’t get much attention.

@paulc @jamesthomson As to this issue I don’t think it has to do with being acttively online or not as I’m seeing folks waking up to this issue. I think it’s more related to how Apple assigns AppleIDs and how they relate to back end server locations.

Here’s a link to an article I’ve writen about this that contains links to my journey’s through Apple Support on my similar issues.

Time for Apple To Come Clean About iCloud

Dan Moren of Six Colors might have found a hint that might help unlock  the Apple Migraine Mystery I have slowly been piecing  together clue by clue in my ongoing Apple iCloud woes. He recently ran…

Life on the Wicked Stage: Act 3
@jamesthomson Thank you for saying this! I thought it was just me. I DID have to reset my iCloud password and I’m still in a re-entry hell on my watch.
@DanMorgan Yeah, I had to enter my password basically twice on every device.
@jamesthomson My account was locked but didn’t have any issues with iMessage or FaceTime. Maybe I got lucky.

@jamesthomson I got 5 active Apple ID-connected devices. Neither one were acting up yesterday, nor today. Since I’m in a different region it’s likely a regional roll-out, one they will probably pause while they correct their mass-reconfiguration deployment.

Unless there was an account breach incident (such as brute-force attempts) for X percent of users and Apple made an emergency password reset for affected accounts.

@jamesthomson Even though they classify it as ”security-related” it doesn’t mean it’s serious. It could be a routine thing, maybe forcing a reset.
@Arcticulate Until Apple makes a statement I guess we won’t know - they are probably firefighting at the moment either way!
@jamesthomson True 😌

@jamesthomson Wait, it seems to be related to ”Stolen device protection” specifically. I don’t have it enabled in my account, so I’m 99 % sure I won’t be affected: https://mjtsai.com/blog/2024/04/26/janky-apple-id-security/

I do use two-factor auth and I don’t use the Apple ID for e-mail or signups other than Sign in with Apple sometimes, so it’s barely known to companies and people outside of Apple, bare any exception I may have forgotten about since it’s an old .mac account ☺️

Michael Tsai - Blog - Janky Apple ID Security

@jamesthomson In case anyone in the thread needs more info about the Stolen Device Protection feature, Apple’s got a guide here: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT212510
About Stolen Device Protection for iPhone

Stolen Device Protection adds a layer of security when your iPhone is away from familiar locations, such as your home or workplace, and helps protect your accounts and personal information in case your iPhone is ever stolen.

Apple Support
@Arcticulate @jamesthomson I’m not sure that blog entry implicates Stolen Device Protection. He does point out that Stolen Device Protection didn’t recognize his home as a trusted location and that that slowed down his recovery efforts, but that doesn’t seem to indicate that his having the Apple ID issue in the first place was related to Stolen Device Protection.
@jamesthomson Sometimes, the only solution to such frustrations as to use a hammer.

@jamesthomson my Apple ID was locked too. Wondered what was going on and called Apple Support. They couldn't see any details in their system, so this leaves a rather sour taste…

Maybe a bug in their system which recognises suspicious behaviour…

And oh boy, what a hassle if one has far too many apple devices.

@jamesthomson jeez, that sucks really hard. Just noticed this and reenabled iMessage / FaceTime for my Apple ID again. Thx for the hint!
@jamesthomson yeah, that was loads of fun to deal with just before getting on a 14.5 hour flight. 🙄
