locally known as pīwakawaka, they are gregarious and will closely follow and investigate people in the bush (primarily because we disturb small insects, which is their main diet, as we walk)
their call can be mimicked with a short high-pitched kissy-face noise, or by rapidly rubbing a piece of styrofoam back and forth on a wet glass jar (we don’t encourage taking styrofoam into the bush nowadays)
many will come to investigate
