Went to local patch to look for kingfisher and bluethroat. Didn’t see those, but got a couple of long-tailed tits in return. Perfectly fine.

We had great weather and views…. And lots of singing woodlarks. Hard to photograph while they’re singing in the air. Sitting in tree however… also saw some stonechat and others like teal. Also saw fallow deer.

The happiness of seeing the first bluethroat of this year is overshadowed by the news the Spectacled Eider of Texel died this morning.

Ecomare on Instagram: “The bird was brought to Ecomare in a weakened state at the end of December. Despite intensive care and treatment, the spectacled eider continued to suffer from health problems.
In the week leading up to its death, a
worm infection flared up again. On Thursday, the bird stopped eating and its condition deteriorated visibly over the last few days. The exact cause of death is not yet known.”

I’m grateful that I was able to see the bird on Christmas Day.

Today’s waddle was in Lepelaarplassen and Oostvaardersplassen. Two nature reserves in the province of Flevoland. Well known for the white-tailed eagles. Managed to see five. all from quite a distance. One was an adult (white tail) and three youngsters (the fifth I couldn’t tell) .

One of the youngsters made quite a show with scaring the birds and trying to catch one in flight (with no success). After it landed I spotted the second and later the third white-tailed eagle.

Had a wonderful waddle today in the sun. Made around 11.000 steps, and saw 42 different bird species and 1 red fox.

Three of the birds species : smew, barnacle goose and chiffchaff.
