🇨🇦 Looks like this boycott is gaining steam...

Avoid shopping at all Loblaw-owned stores, Shoppers Drug Mart, No Frills, Loblaw Real Canadian Superstore for the month of MAY 2024.

@gemelliz I find it funny that there is a chain of shops called "Your Independent Grocer" owned by... Loblaws. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Your_Independent_Grocer
Your Independent Grocer - Wikipedia

@qui_oui @gemelliz height of irony.

They rebranded ValuMart to these in my area fairly recently.

@gemelliz I've been boycotting #Loblaws since the beginning of February!

@MayhamMonday
Same, I've been boycotting them for a couple of years now. I've considered Galen Weston to be scum for a long time now (since he was complaining about the minimum wage going up significantly for the first time in a decade) but the straw that broke my back was his reluctance to provide extra pandemic pay to his workers when they were one of the only major retailers allowed to remain open during lockdown and making money hand over fist.

@gemelliz

@gemelliz Loblaws companies are: Atlantic Superstore, Dominion, Extra Foods, Fortinos, Freshmart, Loblaws, Maxi, No Frills, Provigo, Real Canadian Superstore, SuperValu, T&T, Valu-mart, Wholesale Club, Your Independent Grocer, and Zehrs.
@CatherineBabault @gemelliz they also own Lifelabs.

@vickietorious @CatherineBabault 😳 Is Lifelabs a recent acquisition or did you mean Lifemark?

In 2022, Loblaws acquired the Toronto-based Lifemark Health Corp. from U.S. private equity firm Audax which added 300 private clinics to the Shoppers Drug Mart network.

#dougford #ontario

A Loblaw boycott means more than avoiding its grocery stores

Some Canadians are planning to boycott Loblaw and its affiliate brands in May in protest of its rising grocery prices.

NOW Toronto

@vickietorious Thanks! 😡 How soon before Ford renames Loblaws as "Ontario Health"

@CatherineBabault

@gemelliz all the big grocers are bad. Metro , Sobeys, Farmboy…you have to know your prices and choose accordingly.

@Anne_Canada The key difference is Loblaws owns Shoppers Drug Mart -- now a massive player in the privatization of #Ontario's healthcare system.

Loblaws also owns..
Lifemark: physiotherapy, massage therapy, occupational therapy, chiropractic, mental health & other rehab services.
MEDEO: app for online booking of doctor's appts
Maple Health: 24/7 virtual healthcare -subscription starts at $80/month

@gemelliz @Anne_Canada

During the pandemic, our Conservative government in Alberta pushed all rollout of public health supports through their partners of: Shopper's Drug Mart and McDonald's.

Using McDonald's was particularly interesting, because it also meant you had to drive a car (no cyclists or pedestrians) and use their drive-thru (knowing that most will order something, out of embarrassment of getting "free stuff", and not hunger) in order to access publicly funded PPE.

#abpoli #cdnpoli

@gemelliz @Anne_Canada

I can't, btw, find any other instance of publicly-funded PPE being distributed through restaurant drive-thru windows, or any kind of drive-thru for that matter ('cause most people understand that "public" doesn't mean "motorists"). As we say too often here, "Only in Alberta".

I know I'm straying from the discussion of Loblaws, but the whole idea of private "partners" controlling access to public healthcare is all in the same vein, Shopper's or McD's.

@ned @Anne_Canada

In Ontario, #DougFord 'closed' Public Health depots and assigned covid vaccine distribution to Shoppers Drug Mart. Public Health was dependent on a private pharmacy chain for vaccine. It went as well as you'd expect..

@gemelliz Why is there only one national? grocery cooperative (federated coop) in Canada. Why is it not very competitive with established grocery chains within Canada? “Here we have a hyper-efficient retail operation, run with cutting-edge management and logistics, dominating half the grocery market of a wealthy country, without minting a single billionaire in the process” https://prospect.org/world/2023-10-11-cooperative-that-could-s-group-finland/

The American Prospect
@gemelliz Canadians not loyal to a specific grocer? “since a co-op has no shareholders, and hence no strict need for profit maximization, it can compete quite ruthlessly on price. For another, cooperatives can inspire deeper customer loyalty than an ordinary business “https://prospect.org/world/2023-10-11-cooperative-that-could-s-group-finland/

@pinhman @gemelliz there's more than one national chain. There's Empire which owns Sobeys, Safeway, Freshco and others. Walmart and Costco (both American so 🤷) and probably some others.

Still alarmingly few.

@beeoproblem @gemelliz There are very many small independent local food coops, typically as organic or health oriented. I’m not aware of any well supported infrastructure to support their growth and collaboration.

@pinhman @gemelliz me either.

There's a few genuinely independent grocery stores in my hometown but the ones I've gone to aren't co-ops. Both started out as primarily butchers and grew from there.

@pinhman @gemelliz yes to co-ops. I wish there were more. What a great model to compete with mega corps.
@gemelliz it has been 3 years for me of not spending a single cent in any Loblaw/Weston-related store. I am glad this seems to be gaining traction.
@quico @gemelliz ditto - looking forward to seeing more people doing it.

@gemelliz
The last time I was inside a Loblaws, there was a couple shaking their heads in front of the bags of chips which were "on sale" 2 for $11. Prior to Covid those deals were frequently 2 for $3.50.

I told them about the boycott and they were immediately on-board.

I might blast through my local store a week before May to leave some leaflets explaining the boycott.

@gemelliz Are those stores owned by Bob Loblaw?

@trueslicky Loblaws is owned by the billionaire Weston family. "The family operations began with the purchase of a bakery in 1884 by American-born Canadian George Weston in #Toronto Ontario."

The Weston family currently owns or controls over 200 companies, including the Loblaws supermarket chain, Shoppers Drug Mart pharmacy chain, Holt Renfrew, Canada, Selfridges, UK, Brown Thomas and Arnotts, Ireland, De Bijenkorf Netherlands, Primark, Fortnum & Mason and Heal's.

@gemelliz

I've been using Save-On-Foods (Jim Pattison Group) for 4 years now. Prices are generally good and they have home delivery.

The downside is they're only in some Western centres.

@gemelliz generally speaking, freshco has slightly lower prices on some stuff... but when 3 big corps own 80% of the market we probably have an oligarchi if not a monopoly by collusion.

@gemelliz "This could become more of a movement against companies… the whole industry as a whole has potential for some change here as this thing plays out.”

Yessss! Let's keep going until they're all co-ops and other democratically run structures!

#WSDE #CoOp #Bread #Democracy

@gemelliz For the month of May? I’ve been boycotting them since the beginning of the pandemic. And rarely using for years before that for their predatory pricing.

@alison Likewise. But recently I was booking a medical appointment using MEDEO - my family doctor's booking app - and noticed that too is owned by Loblaws.
