Do you agree? #linux
@nixCraft I need Anger Management for Windows, and Drugs. Tranquilizers mostly
@hankarus @nixCraft I'd say most often one needs an exorcist.
@alphasixtyfive @nixCraft That would imply there is an evil force in it. I think itβ€˜s just chaos, neutral evil chaos.
@hankarus @nixCraft Enforcing absurd hardware requirements for Windows 11 was not evil enough? :-)

@alphasixtyfive @hankarus @nixCraft

200 million computers running windows will be abandoned by Microsoft, no support, no new malware removal, no virus help, abandonware.

If you own a Windows 10 machine, you can throw it onto the far too big tech junkpile, or put linux on it, ffs, please.

Or give a thousand away to schools or free computer activists in cities everywhere.

Any Windows 10 machine can be saved, reborn, made ACTUALLY USEFUL, without surveilance.

Microsoft's draconian Windows 11 restrictions will send an estimated 240 million PCs to the landfill when Windows 10 hits end of life in 2025

But the progress must go on, right?

Tom's Hardware

@kevinrns @alphasixtyfive @hankarus @nixCraft I think that there should be tribunals held for how much E-Waste is going to be caused by Microsoft's intentional euthanization of reasonable computers...

We as Society already hold Apple to a high standard as we should and I think it's high time we also start pointing some serious blame at Microsoft for a copycatting apple when it comes to e-waste. We can do better as a society and we need to and we should..

@Warlockofwires @kevinrns @alphasixtyfive @hankarus @nixCraft apple is the worst offender for doing this across their mobile, tablet, laptop & desktop devices, they have been doing this shit for years...

@Vonskinnback @kevinrns @alphasixtyfive @hankarus @nixCraft that's ironic because Apple has about a 7-year fixed life span on their laptops and desktops and they're consistency allows me to then make Capital purchases on a regular basis every 2/3 of a decade knowing the exact lifespan of my Hardware on the other hand Microsoft is going to cost me $6,000 this year because they're absolutely asinine requirements for Windows 11 means that my 7th gen I5 Panasonic Toughbook that I use for my work in the field and in my lab is it going to be supported in about a year. And to replace it I have to buy a brand new model not a used one because only those support 11.

Apple has cost me $4,000 in the last 10 years because in 2012 I bought a Mac Pro Tower then I ran until last year. And I just replaced it this last July with a M2 Ultra Mac studio...

Maybe I'm a unique use case but in my case I see far more damage done as a business from Microsoft and they're unpredictable lifespans.

@Vonskinnback @kevinrns @alphasixtyfive @hankarus @nixCraft I also do not use their tablets or their smartphones because their Hardware doesn't do what I need it to do so I'm not a part of that mess....

@Vonskinnback @kevinrns @alphasixtyfive @hankarus @nixCraft and I am absolutely fuming mad at the Android ecosystem right now because Samsung has decent life support cycle but their phones are lacking headphone Jacks and they just tore out the SD card slot so there they have no functional advantage and Hardware over anything else that's spectacular I would buy a Sony Xperia because you know they're actually quite nice but Sony is so darn stuck up they won't support their phones past 2 years so even though the hardware could be relevant for five years with one major battery swap during this lifespan the phone won't get updates past 24 months after the phone is released...

If I was the president of this world you would have to support your phones for a minimum of 5 years. The Android ecosystem being touted as a open system of tons of user Choice really doesn't have that much Choice anymore now that HTC decide to leave along with LG...

@Vonskinnback @kevinrns @alphasixtyfive @hankarus @nixCraft as you can probably gather that I have a bone to pick with everything and everyone..

I would love to be able to root for the best boy Linux but unfortunately it still sucks in my profession.
I will give credit Where credit is definitely due well at the same time acknowledging the deficiencies in a system....

It's called being brutally honest...

A great example Apple's Hardware is very much anti repair...

Yet if you consider a repairability to include software because you know without the software things are just bricks of silicon..

Apples repairability of the operating system is far better than Windows...
First off there's no license Keys you have to deal with so when you swap out Hardware losing your right to Windows as a moot point..

One of my core tenant rules of repairability is that swapping out Hardware should never affect your software...

Windows will always fail in this regards...

Pick your poison...

@Warlockofwires @kevinrns @alphasixtyfive @hankarus @nixCraft you are right about the ridiculous licensing model that Microsoft adopts & apple creates some fantastic hardware, but the maintenance of them is always a battle, whereas Microsoft laptops as long as you buy the right manufacturer were always gonna be repairable, Intel Windows 11 came along...
@Warlockofwires @kevinrns @alphasixtyfive @hankarus @nixCraft I was anti apple initially because of childish reasons, but the moment I got my hands on the Samsung S1 I was hooked, but I dropped Samsung after the S3 & moved to HTC, then LG, then to Xiaomi, I am still buying their hardware because I can flash & fix it myself, I haven't owned a new handset since my S3, second hand & broken is my preference. I wish I was more skilled so I could move to Linux, but I am a Microsoft prisoner...
@Warlockofwires @kevinrns @alphasixtyfive @hankarus @nixCraft mostly because that is what I do for a living, I am an IT consultant (because I am not clever enough to be a dev or an admin) so I sell solutions into the Microsoft ecosystem (cloud & onprem)...
@Vonskinnback @Warlockofwires @kevinrns @hankarus @nixCraft Samsung butchers Android like no other. No way I'm buying any of their phones ever again.

@alphasixtyfive @Vonskinnback I used to use a Galaxy S3 then it S5 then an s10e and then I finally got an s22 last year which probably decide to overheat itself and Destroy its own SIM card slot and when I had it repaired by a local place in town they use a non OEM part and then it destroy the ability for the phone to use SIM cards or even the esim....

I would love to get a nice ruggedized phone but every single one I've seen is being sold
With often a two or three year old version of Android and there's no updates included so you know it's good for that year software wise and then who knows what kind of vulnerabilities you can't patch....

It's practically e-waste...

@alphasixtyfive @Warlockofwires @kevinrns @hankarus @nixCraft I used to swap the Samsung image with cyanogenmod the moment I bought it, stripped back gapps & I was good to go...
@Vonskinnback @Warlockofwires @kevinrns @hankarus @nixCraft I had S20 and there was no LineageOS for it. Fingerprint sensor worked 1/20 times. I developed probably as much hate as Hitler after using it.
@alphasixtyfive @Vonskinnback @kevinrns @hankarus @nixCraft I decided to basically give up on smartphones that I went out and bought a caterpillar s22 flip I mean it runs Android so I can use Masto on it like right now and I can also check my email but I don't see the point of spending you know more than $100 on a smartphone thats going to suck no matter what. And at least the caterpillar phone looks badass because it's a flip phone like an old razor from the '90s and hey it has USB C so what do I got to lose
@Warlockofwires @alphasixtyfive @kevinrns @hankarus @nixCraft my limit on new phones is Β£150, broken or second hand, that is it, but I normally get 4 years out of a handset...
@Vonskinnback @Warlockofwires @kevinrns @hankarus @nixCraft CAT S22 looks solid. I want one.

@alphasixtyfive @Vonskinnback @kevinrns @hankarus @nixCraft OK

It's kind of like a Geo Metro technically it's a car but it has three cylinders 🀣🀣🀣..

Frankly I've had it now for about 10 months and I really like it. It has two gigs of RAM so clearly you're probably dropping into swap constantly. But it runs Discord even with video calls. You just have to be very patient with it but I've yet to really crash the thing and frankly I've been impressed of how well it works considering I paid like 70 bucks for it. It is only GSM though so if you're on Verizon you're out of luck. It definitely keeps you from Doom scrolling though that's for certain.

@alphasixtyfive @Vonskinnback @kevinrns @hankarus @nixCraft okay that's also really badass. You have the Nokia bar version and I have like the original razor for the '90s style version. Let's gooooo!

@alphasixtyfive @Vonskinnback @Warlockofwires @kevinrns @hankarus @nixCraft

After 2 Samsung phones, I switched to a new #Fairphone4 and have been reasonably happy with it. No Samsung crapware. Easy path to de-Googling as much as I want, when I want. And of course no Apple iCloud bullshit to deal with.

My big complaint so far is no longer having a 3.5mm headset jack. The single USB-C just doesn't cut it on battery-draining long calls when I need to be plugged in.

@johnlogic @alphasixtyfive @Vonskinnback @kevinrns @hankarus @nixCraft

Unfortunately they are not sold in the states. And I am curious to know how water resistant they are ...

Oregon gets pretty wet sometimes and since I don't drive ..

a lot of my gear is exposed to the rain for hours on end...

@Warlockofwires @alphasixtyfive @Vonskinnback @kevinrns @hankarus @nixCraft

I ordered from a reseller overseas and run mine in California on T-Mobile with good results.

I also know Oregon. (My father was born in Portland and grew up down the river, so half of my family is there.)

The Fairphone 4 seems reasonably water resistant, but I'd keep a Ziploc bag handy to pop it into for the real wet stuff.

(Fortunately its battery capacity is usually adequate to run all day.)

@Vonskinnback @kevinrns @alphasixtyfive @hankarus @nixCraft the fact of the matter is is that there is no real solution and that everyone's hands has blood on it. I mean a great example a lot of Gamers hate me because I run one Macintosh but I own a PCS so obviously I'm an apple shill somehow..lolz.

What they don't realize is that a vast majority of the Xbox Ones sold last decade were made by Foxconn the same company that enslaves Chinese people to make apple cell phones so really the average gamer is just as guilty as I am.....
FX as they're called also makes parts for Dell HP and sometimes Lenovo..

@Warlockofwires @kevinrns @alphasixtyfive @hankarus @nixCraft it is hard to stay honest in the tech industry, price is king & profits are queen...
@Warlockofwires @kevinrns @alphasixtyfive @hankarus @nixCraft I run windows laptops for about 10 years, but buy top end, win11 has screwed that up, I have 2 i7s that are effectively dead as of next year, it is ridiculous...
@alphasixtyfive @Warlockofwires @kevinrns @hankarus @nixCraft I am 45 & it looks like the end of the road for me, I am going to have to bite the bullet & start learning...

@kevinrns @Vonskinnback @alphasixtyfive @hankarus @nixCraft you can't just use Linux though...

Virtual reality games that I've spent 10,000 hours in in The Last 5 Years for my day job for engineering stuff doesn't just work in Linux now things like OpenOffice are wonderful gimp wonderful and thank God DaVinci resolve has a really good Linux version...

installing Linux is not the hard part it's the programs you run afterwards that can make or break the OS being useful.
It's like telling my friends to just go buy a Mac even though they're hardcore gamers.

There is no just anymore nothing is that simple....

To quote the arbiter from halo.3..

Were it's so easy....

@Warlockofwires @kevinrns @Vonskinnback @hankarus @nixCraft LibreOffice will solve all your office problems, there are a lot of games on Steam that run on Linux thanks to Proton.

@alphasixtyfive @kevinrns @Vonskinnback @hankarus @nixCraft and then you get into niche things like VR where proton becomes a lot less useful...sadly.....

And I'm not going to Fork over $1,000 for a valve index to get barely some beta linux support.

@Warlockofwires @alphasixtyfive @Vonskinnback @hankarus @nixCraft

Oh, this is just windows anti linux FUD.

@kevinrns @alphasixtyfive @Vonskinnback @hankarus @nixCraft I'm sorry but that just was going to be I don't like playing video games I'm sorry that he's a very certain game engine called resonite as part of my engineering workflow and I occasionally play Master Chief collection you are not acknowledging the fact that everyone has unique needs and saying just use Linux is dismissive of everyone's unique needs

@Warlockofwires @alphasixtyfive @Vonskinnback @hankarus @nixCraft

I dont know why crap like this gets written. Is it paid for?

Bye

@Warlockofwires @Vonskinnback @alphasixtyfive @hankarus @nixCraft

I'm not sure how the confusion happens, but not every computer is your best gamer box. Dont use roku, use an old pc with linux, make your own router, give 1000s school kids a home pc that doesnt crash.

Dont compare the free about to thrown out for no reason boxen with that gamer box you would love to afford.
