🚨NEWS: The company that chartered the ship that destroyed the Key Bridge was just sanctioned by regulators for silencing whistleblowers raising safety concerns.

Maersk’s policy violated the law, according to federal documents reviewed by The Lever. https://www.levernews.com/feds-recently-hit-cargo-giant-in-baltimore-disaster-for-silencing-whistleblowers/

Feds Recently Hit Cargo Giant In Baltimore Disaster For Silencing Whistleblowers

Regulators cited Maersk for its “illegal policy” blocking employees from reporting safety concerns to the Coast Guard.

@davidsirota Huh. Seems like that’s who ought to pay for the new bridge. 🤷‍♂️
@cswalker21 @davidsirota
Plus a fine of about the cost of 100 new bridges. That seems reasonable imo.
@Gurre Just the cost of all the delays will make nice figures.
(not only bridge traffic, but also shipping delays... 😉)
@cswalker21 @davidsirota
@vosje62 @cswalker21 @davidsirota
Should at least be able to pay for the new bridge to actually be a tunnel (with a double tracked electrified & double-stack railway component).
@davidsirota

So.... Shipping's no different than US rail.

I know Biden said the Federal government is going to pay to replace the bridge, but it really seems like the shipping company ought to be on the hook for both the bridge, the lost revenues for the port of Baltimore and the salaries of the soon to be idled dock workers (etc).

@ferricoxide @davidsirota

Yep. I think Biden's answer was that in order to get started rebuilding now, the government will put up the money. Investigations and figuring out liability will take months or years. If Maersk ends up being responsible, we need to fine the daylights out of them!

@ferricoxide @davidsirota and negligent homicide charges for the Officers and Board
@ferricoxide @davidsirota
that would mean that the #capitalist would have to pay for the damage they cause and that would cut into their profits.
Just saying that sounds silly in today's world of public/private partnerships.
@davidsirota Ahh. We need a real huge chump-chage fine, how about A MILLION DOLLARS! That'll show 'em.
@lou @davidsirota
They lose more than that in the cracks in their couch.
@davidsirota I’m confused, is it Maersk, Grace Ocean Private Ltd. or
Synergy responsible for ship maintenance? Or did I just say the same thing three different ways?
BREAKING: MV Dali Cited for Propulsion Issues Before Baltimore Incident

According to records from the public ship safety database Equasis, MV Dali – the ship that collided with Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge this morning – was cited by port...

@davidsirota

And that's why Maersk should be sent the bill for a new bridge
