Canva Acquires Affinity

Daring Fireball

@daringfireball I wanted so badly to love Affinity Publisher. So badly. Getting to do page layout on my iPad? Yes, please!

And then it didn't support OpenType small caps, which I use a lot. (Thanks to Matthew Butterick, creator of the terrific Concourse font, for teaching me the right way to do small caps. It's all in his online book, Practical Typography. https://practicaltypography.com/small-caps.html)

I was crushed.

Still, I'd love to see them continue to grind away at it and make Publisher a legit competitor for Adobe InDesign, which (alas) remains my preferred design and layout tool. I hope the acquisition doesn't end up wiping them out.

@daringfireball CEOs need another word besides thrilled.

Also the “they told us there won’t be layoffs” is cute. Eventually they will cut people, even if it’s a year later. Which people or which departments who knows, but some will go.

Corporate promises are meaningless, especially during a merger/acquisition.

@daringfireball

“No one is acquiring us.”

“We’re doubling down on…”

Execs should know better than to even say these things now.

@daringfireball The comments on the announcement video show how … disappointed Affinity users are of the news. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YcaGgGErLMo

@daringfireball Happy I chose to go with photomator/pixelmator. Been super excellent so far and one time purchase makes me happy!
@tweece @daringfireball I'm looking for a Lightroom alternative, but not sure there really are great options out there that's not subscription based?
@jramskov @tweece @daringfireball
The issue with Lightroom replacements is that many people conflate “image editing" with “digital asset management”. We have lots of decent choices for the former, but very few for the latter, especially if you want it to work in the cloud.
@freediverx @jramskov @daringfireball Honestly I just use Apple photos
@tweece @jramskov @daringfireball
So do I, but as a former Aperture fan, Photos is a massive regression in features and organizational capabilities. What I want is Lightroom+iCloud, which of course we're not going to get.
@freediverx @tweece @daringfireball I have used Lightroom for years, but now I rarely use my DSLR anymore because the phones simply become so good. I’m already using Apple Photos too and will likely import all my DSLR pictures, though I actually intend to keep the original RAW files out of it.
@jramskov @freediverx @daringfireball I keep my Raw files in Apple photos, it stores them no problem
@tweece @freediverx @daringfireball It’s more of a space issue, I generally store my photos on a NAS. If I were to store my RAW photos in Apple Photos, the storage requirements would go up a lot and Apple storage is not exactly known for being cheap 😬
@jramskov @freediverx @daringfireball My library is about 1.2tb which sits in iCloud photos fine (for now) but I’m not a photographer for a living just a hobby so I bet your library is way bigger than that
@tweece @freediverx @daringfireball My RAW photos seems to be at around 700GB on my NAS. I think I will be fine with just having the processed images in Photos - will take up a lot less space.
@jramskov @freediverx @daringfireball Your library is smaller than mine! It’ll fit in iCloud just fine
@tweece @freediverx @daringfireball Sure, but I would like to have my photos on my computer too.
@jramskov @freediverx @daringfireball In the days of cheap gigabit fiber internet I don’t feel that need anymore
@tweece @freediverx @daringfireball It not about the speed of my internet connection, it’s about not having everything only in the cloud and no backup anywhere else.
@jramskov @freediverx @daringfireball I keep a backup on an external drive, but I don’t work off it. Just plug it in every month or so and let it sync
@daringfireball let the enshittification begin!

My wife is a graphic designer and has shared with me that a decade ago she once designed slide decks in Keynote, now she uses Canva. That Keynote has slid into PowerPoint-like clumsiness/frustration.

She heard this news and exclaimed Canva is just greatness right now.
