Latest comic: What did we learn from Covid?

#covid #COVID19 #coronavirus #cartoon #health #healthcare #pandemic #comic

@jensorensen putting the COVID pandemic in the past tense is buying into the same ludicrous narrative the business guy character is spinning. You did not need to do that. Shame on you.

@davidfetter @jensorensen shame on you, David, for using an opportunity to educate to instead try to shame someone. I agree, and I'll bet Jen agrees as well, with your core tenet, but you immediately got on your high horse and instead of my first thought being "good point, glad you mentioned that!", it was "oh, get over yourself!"

Wasted opportunity.

@lerxst @jensorensen ah, yes, tone policing is definitely the part that's important, not the fact that somebody with a MUCH larger platform than mine chose to go with what the cool kids are calling the ongoing "sociological construction of the end of the pandemic."
@lerxst and who the fuck are you, exactly, that you need to leap to the defense of someone with a lot more power than I have? Are you on her staff, or do you just love to volunteer on the side with more power?
@davidfetter @jensorensen I see nothing in that cartoon that says it's over.
@oclsc @jensorensen "What did we learn" is a past tense. It's bad, especially in a context of the ongoing "sociological construction of the end of the pandemic," as the cool kids term it.
@davidfetter @jensorensen We can learn from what has happened so far in an ongoing matter. I always try to, in fact. It's how you learn to do better this time, not just next.

@oclsc @davidfetter @jensorensen

There is a minor but important difference between "what did we learn from Covid?" and "what have we learned from Covid?" David's point is valid, even if the framing could have been better

@davidfetter Heya, just curious: What is your goal in posting this message?

@davidfetter

Which bit do you think is saying it's over? Do you think the title should've been e.g. "what are we learning from covid?"?

@davidfetter Where did she do that?
@timmc I very literally pointed to the piece where she did. You don't seem to be making any effort at comprehending what you read here.
@davidfetter You mean the post you responded to? Or is there supposed to be a link in your comment? I'm honestly confused here.
@timmc read the sentence in the top left panel. Think back to however you learned English grammar. What tense is that sentence written in?

@davidfetter I don't see how talking about what we have/haven't learned is a problem, given that learning is a thing that happens in the past.

What I *do* see is that you're being an enormous asshole to people who are otherwise your ally in trying to convince people that covid is a problem. So I guess I'm just going to block you?

@davidfetter @jensorensen
Read again, nowhere the artist puts the *pandemic* into past tense.

Luckily we haven't morgues overflowing any more etc., so that aspect is - at least at the moment - past tense.

#CovidIsNotOver

@davidfetter @jensorensen As far as I know, the pandemic is over, because the virus is endemic now. However, that does not mean that the virus is gone or it is harmless now but just that the outbreak patterns are different and that it is part of the natural virus mix in a region. Unfortunately, most people just hear โ€žpandemic overโ€œ (without the second part) and draw the wrong conclusions from thatโ€ฆ
@AUROnline @jensorensen well, you don't know very far, and calling it endemic just means you're turning a policy failure, one which can be corrected, as a fait accompli. The effects of COVID are incredibly bad and getting worse because people are treating it as something that "just is" rather than something the very effective NPIs were actually working to reduce and would eventually have eliminated, had they been done consistently over the time it takes to do that. Those NPIs could still be reinstituted, and they could still work. This is something in which we have agency.
@davidfetter @AUROnline @jensorensen I am not sure if we disagree. Covid is still very dangerous and personally, I havenโ€˜t stopped wearing a mask and still following social distancing (as much as possible). However, if a virus is pandemic or endemic is a scientific definition and Covid fits the criteria for being endemic. As I wrote: that does not make it any less harmful and itโ€˜s still a dangerous virus. Unfortunately politicians worldwide seem to ignore that.

@AUROnline @jensorensen so...neither of those terms are quite as "scientific," by which I'm guessing you mean "objective" in some sense, as you seem to believe. They're judgment calls based on, among other things, political economy.

In the sense of propaganda, which here means "speech intended to persuade, with formal logic taking a distant second, if at all," the word "pandemic" urges immediate action, and the word, "endemic" de-mobilizes, so I'll stick with pandemic, and hope you will, too.

@jensorensen @rysiek The fact there truly are plaguebearer corposcum apologists like the left one is deeply unpleasant.
@jensorensen We learned that a much larger share of the population are idiots than we thought.

We need to talk about #Covid & #LongCovid . As this comic points out, many people got the wrong message from the pandemic & this wasn't an accident. There was an organized effort to spread disinformation. It was profitable for individuals & social media companies.
Health #disinformation on #socialmedia needs to be fixed, because it's killing people.

"Oof, it's so painful!"

"Do you mean pain from Long Covid symptoms? Or painful grief from losing family and friends to Covid?"

"No, I mean attacks from folks who say I'm contributing to disability and death by doing nothing to stop the spread of Covid!"

when folks learn to wrong lesson from history we must all work to ensure they never get power again or history will repeat itself.

#democracy is more than how we vote.

@jensorensen, tragically this is so true!

@jensorensen
Some "both-sides" troll has been trying to convince me this afternoon that "#Biden has been as bad as T**** re: Covid" b/c "they both gave up fighting it too soon" (as if T**** ever fought it at all.)

When I asked him how Biden was supposed to convince people to protect themselves from NON-lethal Covid when they wouldn't even protect themselves from LETHAL Covid, he had no answer except to lob juvenile attacks on my character. ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ

@jensorensen for me I did the vaccinations I did the social distancing because I watched three of my good friends, die of Covid in the beginning of the pandemic, when there were no vaccinations and no way to know how to treat them, and it just upsets me that people are still to this day, saying it didnโ€™t exist or it was a fake will tell it to those three peoples families who lost loved ones because of Covid.
