🆕 blog! “The tooth, the whole tooth, and nothing but the tooth”

You know that ice-breaker game "Two Truths And A Lie"? When I'm forced into some mandatory office fun, I always say... I've sat in the seat of a space shuttle. I still have two of my baby teeth. I used to be a voice-over artist. Well, one of those truths is about to come crashing […]

Update!
I now have a CT scan of my teeth. Comes with a Windows executable - wonder if that'll run in WINE?

Holy shit! This CT Scan is so good that I can see my "Mental Foramen".

Up until today, I had no idea that I had a couple of holes in my lower jaw.

Trying to work out the privacy ramifications of posting a screenshot. This is so freaking cool!

Using Aliza for Linux (https://www.aliza-dicom-viewer.com/) I was able to load the DICOM images from my CT Scan and turn them into a 3D model of my teeth.

I got my teeth 3D printed.

What could possibly go wrong?!

The Bite

A glistening pool of blood gently wept from the body. Crimson gore sparkled under rapid flash photography as it loosely clung to the wounds. So many wounds. Too many for this to have been an accident. "Bite marks," said the forensics officer. "A lot of bite marks." The detective peered at the ragged corpse. It was barely recognisable as human; just a series of holes where flesh ought to be. …

I've just requested the MRI records of my full entire head and brains.

I'm eventually going to 3D print replacement parts for every bit of me!

Hurrah for the NHS!

They sent me the full MRI of my head (on a CD in a weird file format, but let's not be too grumpy).

I'M GONNA 3D PRINT MY BRAINS!

@Edent How do you define "weird", here? From my memory of, briefly, working in a neuroscience department, there's a fairly standard format that's used in MRI scans. (And IIRC, fMRI delivers a sequence of them, one for each point in the time series).
@darkling The files themselves were standard DICOM.
They came compressed in CFS - an obscure and non-standard ISO replacement.
@Edent Could you 3D print a jelly mold of your brain using this?
@Edent ooh I had an MRI yesterday of my torso, I could probably get that! Nice.
@Floppy Between us we can build a superhuman!
With my brains and your body it will be a Super-Man!!!
@Edent @Floppy On the wind, faint whispers that sounded like Jeff Goldblum could just be heard saying "they were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should".
@slowe @Edent ... life ... finds a way ...
@Edent excellent! Last time I had a brain MRI, the resolution was too low to produce anything usable, but that looks a lot better...
@Edent Hooray for people being able to literally pick your brain!
@Edent holy shit! Looking forward to you posting pictures!

@Edent In the nicest possible way... you look better with your flesh on 😆

That is pretty cool though.

@denny
TBF, very few people look good flayed!

@Edent Have to say ... I lack your (presumed) experience to be able to make this declaration.

But you are starting to worry me ...

@Edent ooh, was the format DICOM by any chance? I had to get to grips with that back in 2000 to extract frames from an ultrasound machine 😀
@arakin
Eventually they were DICOM - which are easy to view of Linux.
But they were wrapped in a weird container. CFS.

@Edent @erikcats Few years ago I painstakingly removed the skull on every layer by hand to compile a usable 3D object from a coworkers brain. Is there a better software stack available today?

Was quite a bit of work but was kind of fun to hand him his brain (with an impressive hole where a tumor once lived).

@lenni @Edent ewww and wow
@erikcats @Edent Chunk the size of a big chicken egg… just gone. Gave me a proper appreciation of the brains capacity to adapt to damage 😬
@lenni no idea about the software. Going to have a play.
@Edent Ooh you’ve got lovely sinuses.
@rodti
Thanks - my wife says they're my best feature 😄
@Edent I'd do that myself but my Ender isn't very good at small models.
@mw1cgg
Harsh 😅
@Edent If I were to produce a 3D print of my hair OTOH...
@Edent ooh! let me know how you manage to do this, because I also have an MRI of my brains on a CD that has remained tragically unprinted for years.
3D Printing My Teeth

As previously mentioned, I recently had a some dental issues and learned how to view a CT Scan in 3D using Linux. At a hackathon last week, my friend Sidd brought along a 3D printer. How hard is it to convert a CT scan to a file suitable for printing? Slightly trickier than I expected! Most of the guides I found were outdated, or the software didn't work on Linux, or the instructions assumed a…

@Edent Yay, always have a backup.
@Edent Just think of the jelly moulds you could 3D print!
@Edent Make sure you use the high res files 😄

Want to know what happens if you keep your baby teeth until your mid-40s?

They end up wearing away to little nubs and have to be extracted under anaesthesia.

One had a fairly long root, but was chipped in the mouth.
The other was hardier, but the root was all but gone.

Hope to get a good price from the Tooth Fairy!

Next stage of my teeth upgrades done.
I now have metal healing abutments instead of holes in my mouth.

Rather felt like I was a piece of IKEA furniture as the dentist took a screwdriver and tightened them in my mouth.

Doesn't look like there's any way to fit an NFC chip in the crowns. So I guess they'll just be boring fangs.

Hopefully quick-socketed so I can easily upgrade them later.

New teeth installed!

Feels *proper* weird to not have holes in my smile. My new mouth is going to take some getting used to.

@Edent how many did you have done at once? Talking to a friend today whose friend attempted to do 10 at once, and he is currently not going out due to overestimating how much he could cope with at a time...
@rgarner two. I know there are some places which knock them all out at once and do "smile in a day" - but my dentist warned me off them.
This process could have been quicker, but I was happy to wait to do it right.
@Edent yeah, I think This Is The Way. FOAF is hanging around at home like he's been in receipt of a Tyson uppercut
@rgarner oof! I'll admit, I felt a little self conscious even with only two out. Especially when doing public speaking etc. They offered to make me a couple of falsies, but I went nude instead!
@Edent I’ve had implants too and you get used to them surprisingly quickly. If you’re feeling pressure on the adjoining teeth that’ll pass quickly as well. Enjoy your new gnashers!
@mrpjevans IT IS SO WEIRD!
@Edent @mrpjevans I had a baby tooth removed and an implant in place. It’s the best way to go and there have been 0 issues with it.
@Edent
with NFC:
Would you then put your cheek against the payment terminal in the supermarket?
@tomww I was thinking of headbutting the Oyster terminal on the Tube.

@Edent @tomww Could make volunteering on the EMF bar more interesting!

"Just need to sign in... ow!"

Better than having a chip in the gluteus maximus, or "smart arse"...

@Edent As someone who has... fucked teeth and may be coming into enough money to get that sorted would you mind explaining what you're having done a bit?

@mw1cgg as per up-thread, I've had two of my teeth pulled out.
A few months ago, a very friendly dentist (London based) drilled two pilot holes and stuck in some implants + synthetic bone.
Once they healed, he cut my gum open again and added a healing abutment.
In a few weeks, they'll scan my jaw, print some new crowns and screw them on.

Worth shopping around a few dentists. Get a CT scan at one and then show it to others.

Happy to explain more.

@Edent Sorry, I was in a mobile signal being shit bit so I didn't see there was an up thread.

Noted, thanks.

@Edent i got a couple of casts provided by the dental lab as part of my process. i finally had the implant fitted last week. it actually has a screw thread in the hole for them to test the new tooth with a model of my teeth

@Edent Teeth are *weird*, yo.

Not yours specifically, and not this CT Scan, which is awesome.

Just, a bunch of bones in our head which we use for tearing and mashing up stuff.

I shouldn't think about this, it makes me queasy. 😖

@popey @Edent I was thinking something very similar
@Edent I hope you used Mint for an extra fresh view of your gnashers 😂
@Edent Incredible. A few years ago I wrote a tool to do this in Go for clinics and the ecosystem was very archaic.
