The twisting system that was introduced on the X41T and was used until the X230T was an interesting solution but in my experience has issues as it aged becoming what I'd call "loose" or "floppy". If you were lucky enough to not experience that, I can certainly see it being desirable in several applications. The point about the style I completely understand. The thin pen is not quite as nice, especially for serious pen users. I often would see people carry a second full size pen. And yes, soldered RAM is essentially never ideal. In my mind, these products are so different.

@laptopretrospective @emma Personally, I think the #Enshittification is real and tilty-swively screens don't have to suck.

After all, they could've cut costs by simply designing the cases to use more of the same parts and only differenciate where necessary...

I love.my #X230t and sadly I've yet to find any #laptop on the market that isn't a #downgrade compared to it.

Yes, that includes the @frameworkcomputer / #Framework laptop because they don't offer a #UltraNav-Style #Trackpoint nor #WWAN-Modem / 2nd SSD option and espechally no toolfree-swappable batteries!

In fact, toolfree-swappable and removeable batteeies are non-negotiable essential for me!

@kkarhan @emma @frameworkcomputer Very true, they don't have to suck. ThinkBook has them now and the one I saw at TechWorld looked neat. Not sure if it will come back to #ThinkPad but you never know. It shows the mechanism is still valid. Keep using that X230T for as long as you can, great machines.
@laptopretrospective @emma @frameworkcomputer Yeah, I'll keep it but I do really reach the limits of it's hardware and whilst stuff like #NB51's aftermarket mainboard is admirable, it doesn't make sense to buy some 8th gen i5 today as it only provides me with maybe a year or two of wiggle room...
@kkarhan @emma @frameworkcomputer Yeah, I hear ya. Those newer mainboards are interesting but I never thought them truly practical. For example, you are still using old gen battery tech which is a compromise right from the get-go.
@laptopretrospective @kkarhan @emma @frameworkcomputer But nothing is stopping you from getting a new/next gen battery whenever you want; Medium term they'll probably release new batteries for their old laptops.

@krutonium @laptopretrospective @emma @frameworkcomputer

Except there is #DRM in the #Batteries because "F**k the consumer"!!!

And no, #Lenovo canceled support for the #X230t long ago...

Kevin Karhan (@[email protected])

@[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] precisely. Add to that the #Enshittification by #Lenovo with #DRM in #Batteries so swapping cells won't fix them... I guess I've to actually get some money together so,I can make a #NUCbook prototype and do a #Kickstarter with it... https://github.com/kbtechnologies/NUCbook And yes, I do plan to use #LiFePO4 cells because they do live longer, are safer and are more practical in daily use woth partial (dis)charges, but since the charging is indepensent from the internal system, theoretically anything that does 12V DC can be used as (rechargeable) battery...

@krutonium @laptopretrospective @emma @frameworkcomputer

Still, that doesn't fix the problem that I can't just hot-swap batteries on the go, which is the reason why I'd use a Laptop in the first place...

@kkarhan @laptopretrospective @emma @frameworkcomputer

*Thinking*

I mean, if I recall correctly, they *did* release the CAD models for the laptops, there's nothing that I can think of that would prevent someone from designing a bottom shell that allows for quick swap batteries.

@krutonium @laptopretrospective @emma shure, but then I'd be dependant on @frameworkcomputer keeping the design as is, and I don't want to end up like the maker of the #ModBook...

@kkarhan @laptopretrospective @emma @frameworkcomputer Fair enough but so far Frameworks track record has been pretty damn clean
@krutonium @laptopretrospective @emma I don't doubt that and if I have to literally choose a device right now that I can actually buy then obviously @frameworkcomputer would be my go-to choice simply because they are quite good and not merely the "least worst"...

@kkarhan @laptopretrospective @emma @frameworkcomputer Makes sense.

Tbh I kinda want one myself just to support them, not at all related to my daily use laptop still running a 4th gen laptop i7 lol

@krutonium @laptopretrospective @emma Understandable.

I'd see it kinda similar. If I were not to at the very least point people towards @frameworkcomputer and have them as option on my list - just like I do with #Fairphone - then I'd not be putting money where my mouth is and actually "vote" with the wallet for more repairable hardware...
