Russians staying in Sri Lanka have showed their gratitude by creating a number of “whites only" night clubs, denying access to local Sri Lankans. So Sri Lankan authorities now decided to help the racists by telling all 288,000 Russians in Sri Lanka to take the next flight back to good old Moscow, where the average skin color is more to their liking.

Those Russian currently living there are mostly trying to get away from Putin regime. Many of them are actually very "world open" maybe even a bit to open for some "conservative " Sri Lankan religious hardliner.

Hard to tell from the distance what really goes on but not all Russian are evil, that should be clear.

@so_treu @randahl actually, TBH, Ukraine's invasion by Russia has massive geopolitical implications which I find very disturbing and will have serious consequences at multiple levels if Putin succeeds in his objectives. From your POV, the reports of racism by the Ukrainian authorities may seem of great importance, but for me it is not irrelevant that hundreds of thousands of Russians may become available to feed Russia's cannon fodder attack on Ukraine.

Both the outcome and the method smell like Putin's work. Sounds like bad news to me.

@randahl while I condemn such racist behavior, was it really necessary to blame ALL Russians for that and extrapolate sanctions against ALL Russians? That also sounds racist in my opinion. Such actions only strengthen Putin's propagandist take that the west hates every russian, regardless if they are against Putin or not.

The Japanese living in Haryana (esp. Gurgaon) have helped in developing the land and generated employment by creating factories and opened offices. Their communities are gated and open ONLY to their friends, colleagues, and maids. They also have their own Karaoke(s) where ONLY the Japanese are allowed. If you go, they'll politely tell you that they're closed. Locals don't complain nor cry racism, racism. Smart!

Because this Clubs were frequented by these Russians. Other white people were probably not perhibited from entering, but if the main spoken language at a place is russian, it will attract mostly russian speaking customers.

And we shouldn't celebrate 288K Russians being deported back to a country they fled to escape a war. A large number of those 288K Russians will end up conscripted, fighting, and dying for Putin. The only winners in this story are some Sri Lankan politicians looking for a distractions from their fiscal incompetence and Putin who gets more conscripts to send to their deaths. This is not perfect.

Of course that is nothing to celebrate.

I would like to know, if they got a Warning and had a Chance to change their behaviour.

@Life_is @randahl my point is the Sri Lankan government is punishing all Russians in Sri Lanka for the actions of a few Russians. Ironically because some Russians were being bigoted the Sri Lankan government was bigoted against all Russians.

I am sure, there are good people among the 288000.

But it is difficult to be a good person in Putin's Russia AND have the financial means to travel to and to stay in Sri Lanka.

And even if that were true, you could be a 17yo kid and your parents have taken you out of the country so you don't get conscripted on your 18th birthday. We need to be more compassionate, generally people are wonderful and borders are stupid.

@greg Greg, I think your point about collective punishment is valid. But please note, that losing a tourist Visa is NOT the same as being deported back to Russia. It simply means, you have overstayed your welcome and need to go somewhere else. If a Russian is in Sri Lanka to avoid conscription in Russia, that person can still travel somewhere else.

British Colonization ended less than a century ago, horrifying stories of how locals were treated at the hands of the Racist White Colonials are still widely known.

This is an under-reaction if any. If it were #India or #Pakistan, its very likely mobs would be stirring to punish the 're-colonials'.

Sri Lankan Gov is trying an incredible balancing act.

My only objection was to @randahl's tone of joy and celebration at the suffering of normal Russians, as though they are somehow responsible and deserve to be punished for the actions of Putin.
