kind of incredible how many times Sam Bankman-Fried's veganism comes up in his sentencing submission and the attached letters of support
#crypto #cryptocurrency #SBF #FTX
ah well your honor, i know he's committed one of the most massive financial crimes in history, but you see, he is a VEGAN
#crypto #cryptocurrency #SBF #FTX
it's come up so often i just checked to see if maybe judge kaplan is a vegan?? (doesn't seem to be)

from a letter by fellow effective altruist and vegan David Pearce

"here we have a person who (literally) wouldn't hurt a fly incarcerated in a place that wasn't built for folk with such soft hearts"

he would for sure steal all the fly's money though
@molly0xfff best laugh of the morning, tyty
@molly0xfff And all this time I thought vegans were morally opposed to fleecing
@doncruse @molly0xfff okay, this one brought out a smile 😁
@molly0xfff for the greater good of flykind, no doubt
@molly0xfff I wonder what society is supposed to do with someone who doesn't recognize that stealing harms someone.
@molly0xfff
Money is wasted on flies, he's just properly reallocating.
@molly0xfff Wait until he finds out how many TESCREAL vegans I've met who are actually really terrible people to other humans, even if they're nice to computers and animals
@molly0xfff of course he wouldn't hurt a fly. flies don't have any money
@molly0xfff Wouldn't hurt a fly, but is happy to consign all living humans to hell on earth in deference to those trillions of pretend future people.

@molly0xfff

I described what I admired about vegans in another post, but in response to this the dark side of some vegans could be a...tendency to focus on moral beliefs that make them feel self-satisfied and really zone in on that and refuse to consider ways their zealous nature has adverse impacts. I can easily see them falling prey to something like effective altruism that lets them feel good about themselves while being self-centered, but the vegans I know aren't like that.

@molly0xfff

Maybe it is meant to point out the difference to Adolf Hitler, who was not vegan?

@molly0xfff

These ineffective asshats are really giving veganism a bad name.

@molly0xfff
Clients must be thrilled to learn they were struck by a soft criminal.
@molly0xfff oh okay he's a vegan that makes up for the fraud
@molly0xfff Is bloodsucking compatible with veganism?
It's a strange kind of ethical principle that baulks at eating animals but allows preying on human beings.

@molly0xfff Has anyone told the Jews that Hitler followed a vegetarian diet? I'm sure it'd make ALL of the difference on how people view him.

Like that guy wouldn't harm a chicken or cow. Fine upstanding gentleman that he was...

@molly0xfff so, he saves the world through veganism, the same world he's helping burn down with crypto mining?
@molly0xfff reminds me of the movie Sneakers: β€œI can’t kill my friend”, to henchman β€œkill my friend β€œ.
@molly0xfff Effective veganism: β€œwell sure I am eating all the meat and animal products *now*, but just so I can accelerate us to the point where fewer people will consume them in the future…”
@emalm @molly0xfff It's funny because this is actually valid longtermism
@emalm we joke, but I could honestly see an EA vegan build a factory farming empire (or at least profit from that industry) on the justification of getting rich to fund some venture that ostensibly will kill fewer animals "in the future".
@molly0xfff
I don't think Mr Pierce has a very good understanding of the greater incarceration concept.
@molly0xfff from last week’s Bucolic Marin to today’s Soft Hearts, I am learning many new dog whistles for White these days
@molly0xfff it's probably the only thing they can think of that might demonstrate he has a conscience
@molly0xfff @siracusa Given his money funnelling activities to the Dems 2022 mid-terms campaign including via Ukraine, he is a political prisoner perhaps not in the same league as Assange given his illegal deeds but a political prisoner nonetheless πŸ™„
@molly0xfff His prosecution is all part of the Big Meat conspiracy

@molly0xfff "here we have a person who (literally) wouldn't hurt a fly incarcerated in a place that wasn't built for folk with such soft hearts"

Ambiguous modifier for who/fly. He might hurt a fly that wasn't so incarcerated.

Double negative. He *would* hurt a fly in a place that was so built.

@molly0xfff is there some false associative property of a vegan being of sound ethical and moral character across disciplines and beliefs?
@molly0xfff like saying β€œThis evil person can not be as bad as that because they loved their pets in an endearing way” … like the opposite of β€œhe was no angel”

@molly0xfff

@scanner @molly0xfff no there really isn't. As a vegetarian I respect the discipline and moral focus that I see in many people who are vegan though. As far as I could imagine sentencing guidelines my most favorable interpretation of it would be... showing some sort of intense capacity for moral discipline that could maybe make a case for being able to do good work reforming other moral beliefs after they serve their time?

@coline

Did ya boy commit one of the "most massive financial crimes in history" or not?

That is a 'yes' or 'no' question

Yes?

or no?

Answer and stop there

cc @molly0xfff @scanner

@FinchHaven @molly0xfff @scanner

Yes I absolutely agree and believe he should serve the sentence he gets. If you still have a problem with what I'm writing after that you can go ahead and block me and save us both the trouble of interacting further. πŸ‘

@molly0xfff

So I claim to be vegan, I'm immune to criminal punishment?!

>> I know I destroyed the he homes of hundreds of families now dead in the process of my apathetic compulsion to blow up the world, but-
<< BUT WHAT?!!
>> Y'see, I'm vegan...
<< Oh ok, you're innocent then. You're a victim of crimes against vegans!

>> I know I assassinated the prime minister and bombed parliament but-
<< BUT WHAT?!!
>> Y'see, I'm vegan...
<< Why didn't you say so?! You're not a criminal, you're just a misunderstood vegan trying to live peacefully!!

@molly0xfff I think its a mistake to hierarchicalize people based on their veganism - its a very weird metric to apply usefully other than to reinforce your own prejudices.
@molly0xfff must be those Vegan Powers 😬
@molly0xfff I’d mention someone else who was vegetarian, but I’d be courting Godwin’s Law.

@molly0xfff

Do you know how you can find out if someone is vegan?

Don't worry. They'll tell you.

@FinchHaven @molly0xfff
Bro, "vegan" isnt self-assigned. It means you avoid using other animals as means to ends. It's not new. It literally goes back to and beyond Pythagoras.

Won't even get started on what "anarchism" is but google is still free and still kinda works so you can look that one up on your own.

@molly0xfff my client never once made fungible assets from animals
@molly0xfff I've been vegan for years, but no one ever told me it was a get out of jail free card. If I'd known I'd totally have been doing crimez
@molly0xfff is it supposed to be some kind of debilitating illness?

@molly0xfff

'he sees his victims as *vegetables* not cute furry animals! like your lovely dog barrister!"

@molly0xfff The kind of logical commitments effective altruism demands (and contends should be compelling to others) are just wild.
@molly0xfff "I request that this jury is discharged and replaced with one comprised of cows."
@molly0xfff And he is nice to his parents!

SBF's lawyers also claim he is a "brilliant, complex and humane person" who should be returned "promptly to a productive role in society". πŸ™„

@funcrunch @molly0xfff Making licence plates is productive, right?
@molly0xfff @siracusa Just an embarrassment to the rest of us vegans.
@molly0xfff @siracusa I think a term for this is "moral licensing." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-licensing
