from a letter by fellow effective altruist and vegan David Pearce
"here we have a person who (literally) wouldn't hurt a fly incarcerated in a place that wasn't built for folk with such soft hearts"
I described what I admired about vegans in another post, but in response to this the dark side of some vegans could be a...tendency to focus on moral beliefs that make them feel self-satisfied and really zone in on that and refuse to consider ways their zealous nature has adverse impacts. I can easily see them falling prey to something like effective altruism that lets them feel good about themselves while being self-centered, but the vegans I know aren't like that.
Maybe it is meant to point out the difference to Adolf Hitler, who was not vegan?
These ineffective asshats are really giving veganism a bad name.
@molly0xfff Has anyone told the Jews that Hitler followed a vegetarian diet? I'm sure it'd make ALL of the difference on how people view him.
Like that guy wouldn't harm a chicken or cow. Fine upstanding gentleman that he was...
@molly0xfff "here we have a person who (literally) wouldn't hurt a fly incarcerated in a place that wasn't built for folk with such soft hearts"
Ambiguous modifier for who/fly. He might hurt a fly that wasn't so incarcerated.
Double negative. He *would* hurt a fly in a place that was so built.
@scanner @molly0xfff no there really isn't. As a vegetarian I respect the discipline and moral focus that I see in many people who are vegan though. As far as I could imagine sentencing guidelines my most favorable interpretation of it would be... showing some sort of intense capacity for moral discipline that could maybe make a case for being able to do good work reforming other moral beliefs after they serve their time?
Did ya boy commit one of the "most massive financial crimes in history" or not?
That is a 'yes' or 'no' question
Yes?
or no?
Answer and stop there

Yes I absolutely agree and believe he should serve the sentence he gets. If you still have a problem with what I'm writing after that you can go ahead and block me and save us both the trouble of interacting further. π
So I claim to be vegan, I'm immune to criminal punishment?!
>> I know I destroyed the he homes of hundreds of families now dead in the process of my apathetic compulsion to blow up the world, but-
<< BUT WHAT?!!
>> Y'see, I'm vegan...
<< Oh ok, you're innocent then. You're a victim of crimes against vegans!
>> I know I assassinated the prime minister and bombed parliament but-
<< BUT WHAT?!!
>> Y'see, I'm vegan...
<< Why didn't you say so?! You're not a criminal, you're just a misunderstood vegan trying to live peacefully!!

Bro, "vegan" isnt self-assigned. It means you avoid using other animals as means to ends. It's not new. It literally goes back to and beyond Pythagoras.
Won't even get started on what "anarchism" is but google is still free and still kinda works so you can look that one up on your own.
'he sees his victims as *vegetables* not cute furry animals! like your lovely dog barrister!"
SBF's lawyers also claim he is a "brilliant, complex and humane person" who should be returned "promptly to a productive role in society". π
