Alyssa CoghlanI sometimes see folks being surprised at how willing people are to attribute actual cognition to LLM processes.
We're a species that has historically attributed cognition to thunderstorms, the sun, the moon, trees, rocks, etc, and LLMs hit us square in the language centres that have historically been our most reliable source of evidence that we have encountered a fellow "thinker".
The genuinely surprising thing would be if we *didn't* have a tendency to anthropomorphise chatbots.
