N1 Wednesday

Sure, there were a few exciting moments and the make-up (quickie) sex of the last four songs. But overall a fairly uninspired set with fairly uninspired play. The good news is this is par for the course when the band tries to play a single-set show, and the next 3 nights are all standard two-setters.

The only question about last night’s ranking is best show since ___? This assumes you put an asterisk on NYE.

Add up the improv, factor in the quality of the WoH, throw in no S2 downtime & I’m putting it ahead of anything from 2023. This includes the Greek Tweezer->Simple show and all the MSGs. It’s probably better than anything from 2022 though I’ve blocked most memories from those tours. Maybe Shoreline21? A masterpiece.

I need to relisten to a few versions, but I’d be shocked if last night isn’t the 🐐 CDT—which is incredible given how many legendary versions there are.

Best back-to-back shows since Shoreline 21, and I bet that band sounds like ass vs this one.

One of the best shows of 4.0, and it pains me to put it below a <gap>, but it just doesn’t have the horsepower to keep up with Thursday despite the superior Q1.

@chopaganda Dust feels like one of the best jams I’ve ever heard from them. As fresh sounding as it gets. I get the full show point of view but the Dust>SoS is so next level that at a minimum no gap needed. Equal to N2. I’d eve say the Dust was so great it elevates N3 to top spot. Also loved the first set. Missing the deep dive of Birds>Axilla but still strong.
@spreaditround Eh. The Wave of Hope from N1 was pretty incredible, and it just has so much more. The gap just means there is clear differentiation. While no gap means it’s easy to argue one show over the other. Funny bc last has a case for best show of any of the last several tours.
@chopaganda I like the Dust infinitely more than the WoH and that’s a pretty wild thing to consider. More nuance and weird tone play in the grooves, with some real punctuation with the repeating loop Trey uses to go into what sounds to me like a slowed psych version of I Wanna Be Your Dog. But agree, last night somehow topping a few of my favs from last year and that’s saying something.
@chopaganda I think it’s undeniably and instantly the 🐐 CDT. after a couple big 2023 efforts, they hit a grand slam.
@justinbruce I need to do IT, Dick’s 2013, and Hollywood Bowl 23. Trying to think of there are others on the shortlist. Already tossed out Baker’s.
@chopaganda @justinbruce Randall’s 2014 is up there, but doesn’t touch last night.
@justinbruce @Divided_Scott @chopaganda Camden 99 count or dq’d for brevity?
@jdp11 @Divided_Scott @chopaganda ha ha these texts from earlier are appropriate re: 7-10-99
@justinbruce @jdp11 @Divided_Scott @chopaganda They are kinda apples and oranges to me. That was one of the first ones that really jammed out, but I don’t think it can compete with the depth of this one.
@vriphish76 @justinbruce @jdp11 @chopaganda It’s extremely tasty but a one course meal. Last night was like the chef’s table.
@Divided_Scott @vriphish76 @justinbruce @chopaganda well that leaves me very excited (still haven’t got to last night’s).
@jdp11 @justinbruce @Divided_Scott Just don’t think it’s on the level and I have that one memorized.
@chopaganda I had Hollywood bowl as my #5 JOTY in 2023 but those two aren’t close, IMO. I’d need to rehear the dick’s 13 version, admittedly, but don’t think the IT effort approaches last night, either. Hot hot stuff 😮‍💨
@justinbruce @chopaganda don't forget 7/13/14 from Randall's when talking GOAT Chalkdusts, but it's clear last night prob smokes them all.
@Evdude @chopaganda yeah that’s a good call. back in the day that version was huge to me (and all the other wooks)
@justinbruce @chopaganda that show (and run) is still one of my favorites.
@Evdude @justinbruce @chopaganda Festival vibe and I got to sleep in my own bed? Yes please.
@justinbruce My gut says last night wins by a long shot, but I’ve been burned by recency bias too many times.
@chopaganda @justinbruce There was a sick one in Worcester ‘98 I think. Wipeout show, if I recall. That’s probably the one I’ve heard the most.
@Rosey @chopaganda @justinbruce the woosta wipeout Dust is extremely sick especially post Mirror - there's a little flurry from Trey that's an all timer, especially on a good AUD - but it's not expansive. It's kind of a 94/95 style turbo smoke jam not a journey
@chopaganda @justinbruce lol @ thinking BD is below all three of those
@ry_storm @justinbruce Never said it was below those. Just that I tossed it out bc I’ve listened to it recently enough. Settle down, Beavis.

@chopaganda @ry_storm @justinbruce

Hot take: Phish hasn’t played an elite 30+ minute jam with real flow, cohesiveness, hose, and musical substance since the 12-30-19 Tweezer. Where all 4 members are contributing to a sum greater than its individual parts. There have been a few great 20ish minute jams (Deercreek Simple 21, MSG AWOH 23, etc) but there aren’t many of those either. They’ve been more adventurous lately but the real musical substance just isn’t there IMO #phish

@Bandino @chopaganda @justinbruce I didn’t realize you were still on the internet

@ry_storm @chopaganda @justinbruce

Nobody leaves the internet buddy. Also, I muted your incessant fluffing on Twitter--didn’t realize you were also Fluffstadon 🤣

@Bandino @chopaganda @ry_storm @justinbruce I know you have a reputation to uphold as being in the one percent of the 1 percent club of fans who think 21-24 sucks, but you just sound silly at this point. You may want to consider hanging up the headphones my man. 🤣

@vriphish76 @chopaganda @ry_storm @justinbruce

I wouldn’t say it sucks, even though I throw that word around as part of my trolling instinct. 😂. I guess I just mean overrated or mediocre. It’s all relative I suppose. But I’d take the highlights of 2016-2019 over 21-24 any day--although there have only been two 24 shows so we’ll see what happens...I’m excited for the Sphere and MondeGreen

@ry_storm @Bandino @vriphish76 @chopaganda to have a take this hot, and spit it with this confidence, earns my respect. I think we’re in halcyon phish days and am here to enjoy it while it lasts, but to each their own.
@chopaganda getting spicy nice and early on a Friday. Love to see it.
@Evdude Post hard or go home.
@chopaganda as far as complete shows go 10/23/21 is up there too
@chopaganda sounds like someone put cialis in their drinks before the show under that full moon.
@chopaganda they’ve essentially started charging for a rehearsal set in recent years. Hell, make it a “soundcheck” set and at least might get some funny moments and unique jams.

@chopaganda lol @ the preemptive gaps.

Last night is the best Phish show of 2024 (for a few more hours).

@rowjimmy @chopaganda I was going to say something but I let it slide
@chopaganda yeah at least the 2022 welcome set had a 21 minute Tweezer in it lol
@ry_storm It’s so weird how they just can’t find a good rhythm in one set shows.

@chopaganda @ry_storm they've never been a first set band.

sure, there are outliers and legendary jams sprinkled over the years but they have always used the first as the "opener" warm up for the main show in the second.

when you don't have a second set to get to it changes the calculus

@LostReflector @ry_storm That’s fair. It often feels like their problem is they try to play a set 1 and set 2 in the one-set window.
@chopaganda @ry_storm definitely and you can see that in how they structure those rain delay extended sets. there is usually a point in the middle that acts like a first set closer transition to bigger songs but it never fully works

@LostReflector @chopaganda @ry_storm the dead tried that same trick in those long one set shows now and then and it's equally awkward. Some of those sets are still real fun but never truly great

Edit: before anyone Well Actuallys this I mean after the emergence of the regular two set structure. And the SNACK benefit from 75 is the one exception I know of

@chopaganda @ry_storm it doesn’t help when the man who holds the reigns has a sense of humor like ‘We’re in Mexico. Wouldn’t it be hilarious if we played Alaska? Cuz like, it’s cold? Lo effin l’
@chopaganda what the hell? This is your moment to shine and you’re blowing it. I cannot think of a more uninspired show at least since Texas 2016 and quite possibly since Vegas 04
@BilboBaggins Come on! I feel like I was fairly harsh.
@chopaganda I feel like Wilmington 1 or Charleston 3 were Big Cypress compared to last night .
@chopaganda and to be clear your Wilmington 1 review —while I don’t completely agree with how bad it was —is the gold standard for criticizing a bad show.
@BilboBaggins I don’t even remember that one.
@chopaganda it was your finest hour
@chopaganda mostly interested to see where the gif theme is going. Vacation theme? 80's videos? Specifically the Go-Gos? The anticipation is killing me!

@Neddyo Join the club!

I started by pondering 4 Audreys from the 4 vacation movies. Then, I was gonna have Cousin Eddie for “Shitter’s full” because of last night’s setlist. That led to The Go Gos Vacation in my head so I ran with it.

I’m lost, Neddy. I’m lost.

@chopaganda They usually played better back when they didn’t let people in and did 45 minute sound check jams that were loose and fun. (Magnaball soundcheck, Clifford Ball souncheck, etc.)
