Don't use self service checkouts πŸ™‚πŸ‘

@simonzerafa @Chrishallbeck

I've been using them since covid-19. One less person touching my food.

@Chrishallbeck At the self-checkout, every produce item is 4011. The stores don't even train their employee clerks on produce identification. How can I, an untrained layperson, be expected to know what it is that I am buying--even though I put it on my list and carefully picked it out?
@log @Chrishallbeck So you just get a receipt that says "banana banana banana"?? 🍌🍌🍌🍌🍌
@prayag_suthar @Chrishallbeck Whoa, now. I'm not made of money. It just says "banana banana".

@Chrishallbeck

I never use self-check-out’ for exactly this reason. Why should I pay to be a cashier? I felt the same way when the’Bag & Save’ opened decades ago in my old neighborhood. We called it β€˜Bag & Slave’.

@Chrishallbeck gotta give yourself the employee discount 😁
@Chrishallbeck I believe it’s called β€œBipping”
@Chrishallbeck @Batronyx People always say "oh these are taking jobs", but in my experience it's more that we hire and then like no one stays more than a month or two (because it's a shit job) so self checkout gets staffing priority because 20 self checkout registers > two regular registers. Also no one ever worries about the poor gas station pump attendants that no longer have a job since everything went self serve, so...
@yirggzmb @Chrishallbeck
It makes good economic sense on a number of levels. That said, I hate it, because basically you're correct: it's a shit job I thought I was done with in high school. Though technically I was just a 'sacker' and getting to deliver groceries to the elderly on Wednesday's was a treat.
@Batronyx Yeah, no, I'm 100% on board with "self checkout isn't for everyone, or even every shopping trip for people who like it". It's just I get a bit grumpy over the whole "it's taking people's jobs" stuff (it's not) and the "I'll use self checkout when they give me a 20% discount" stuff (I don't even get that much off, also those people have no problem at gas stations which are 100% self serve)

@Batronyx Also, mathematically, if all the day people go home at 7, and you had 5 people scheduled to work the evening but only 3 showed up, I'm sorry but the people who want us to shut down self check out (20 registers) to all run regular lanes (3 of them) need to go back to elementary school math class lol

I've legit been yelled at by customers for working self checkout instead of opening more regular lanes for them, and A not my decision and B you're an idiot

@Batronyx Anyway, I keep coming back to the gas station thought. Basically no one (I'm sure someone, but not common) complains about pumping their own gas because it's been that way long enough that it just seems normal. But "pumps people's gas for them" used to be a real job. If self serve took over grocery shopping (like people have been predicting for decades and hasn't succeeded yet), give it a few years and people would just be used to it too. I don't think it should or will, but still
@yirggzmb Cross=post. I basically just said the same thing. It'll catch on and when people are old enough to barely remember having someone else do it for you, it won't even be a thing, Well maybe a thing, 'the rich' have, but you know what I mean.
@yirggzmb People don't like to have things taken away. I barely remember gas station attendants pumping our gas growing up. I don't feel like I'm missing anything, at the gas station, like I am with the checkout service.
I also know some elderly folks ( ☝️ not me, not yet ) who get lonely and that brief interaction with their checker means a lot.
I'm sure you know them; the ones that talk your ear off while your trying to get to your next customer. Sweetly annoying

@Batronyx lol I do know the ones you mean, but I'm not annoyed. Like I tell people who seem anxious that they're taking too long "I'm paid by the hour" πŸ˜‚

There's a TON of reasons to go to a regular check out. Bought a ton of stuff, got the kids with you, paying by check, bad with technology, for some reason you actually like small talk, whatever

I just get really tired of the average person not realizing it's often more complex than "they don't want to pay people".

@Batronyx Also, shopping I personally prefer self checkout because I know I'm a better cashier than nearly all of my coworkers. I don't think it's conceited to say that when you genuinely have 8+ years over most people there lol

But working, I prefer regular register if I have to do one. I can focus on one person at a time. I'm not being pulled in a bunch of directions at once. If you've never had to babysit a self checkout, it's both really boring and really overwhelming lol Hate it

@yirggzmb At my current job, I do both project and ticket work. Between projects can get boring on quiet days. Then there are the days I'm trying to wrap up my part of a project and I'll get way too many helpdesk tickets at the same time.
@yirggzmb On that elderly note, I'm having a hard time remembering to take advantage of the senior discount I'm apparently eligible for at several places.
Ewww.
@Batronyx bahaha, yeah I don't think I'd remember either

@Chrishallbeck

I needed a casserole dish and got one at the store. It had a lid and everything. Perfect. I pay for it at the self-checkout and get it home. Once home, I realize the lid doesn't fit properly. ... And it has no handle. ... It's a pie dish. It's from the same company and had no price on it, but it is clearly a pie dish that I stole.

I figure I've been overcharged enough over the years to cover the cost.

I didn't use the self thingy but the cashier typed in 1 instead of 10 pieces. I just complained and paid. They didn't even say "thank you". I still think it was the right thing to do...
