@Chrishallbeck @Batronyx People always say "oh these are taking jobs", but in my experience it's more that we hire and then like no one stays more than a month or two (because it's a shit job) so self checkout gets staffing priority because 20 self checkout registers > two regular registers. Also no one ever worries about the poor gas station pump attendants that no longer have a job since everything went self serve, so...
@yirggzmb @Chrishallbeck
It makes good economic sense on a number of levels. That said, I hate it, because basically you're correct: it's a shit job I thought I was done with in high school. Though technically I was just a 'sacker' and getting to deliver groceries to the elderly on Wednesday's was a treat.
@Batronyx Yeah, no, I'm 100% on board with "self checkout isn't for everyone, or even every shopping trip for people who like it". It's just I get a bit grumpy over the whole "it's taking people's jobs" stuff (it's not) and the "I'll use self checkout when they give me a 20% discount" stuff (I don't even get that much off, also those people have no problem at gas stations which are 100% self serve)
@yirggzmb People don't like to have things taken away. I barely remember gas station attendants pumping our gas growing up. I don't feel like I'm missing anything, at the gas station, like I am with the checkout service.
I also know some elderly folks ( ☝️ not me, not yet ) who get lonely and that brief interaction with their checker means a lot.
I'm sure you know them; the ones that talk your ear off while your trying to get to your next customer. Sweetly annoying
@yirggzmb On that elderly note, I'm having a hard time remembering to take advantage of the senior discount I'm apparently eligible for at several places.
Ewww.
@Batronyx bahaha, yeah I don't think I'd remember either
