@rootcompute I'm trying to spot the comical charging nose š
The sad part is, we all know it's only going to get worse before it "might" get better
@rootcompute honestly i learn more about whats going on with tech from mastodon than any tech press website.
a lot of it is just steganography of press releases, or close enough.
@rootcompute It has never existed, not even when you paid for a magazine (so you it was not free and you were paying with your data).
Right page magazine ads are something that ruined the experience. The short lived printed narional version of Edge was the only one I remember that lacked ads.
@rootcompute yeah some of the tech sites, the number of ads is absolutely monstrous! Permanent footer ad, ad every few paragraphs, pop ups, auto playing videos that follow you down the page etc.
I removed them from my own site (although they were never as bad as above!) as it just wasn't worth the poor user experience.
I understand that websites need to cover costs, but it just encourages people to use ad blockers everywhere and then where does it leave income generation. Paywalls š
@jameswoodcock It's truly unbelievable how stuffed full of ads these websites have gotten; I couldn't live without ublock origin these days
One aspect that shouldn't be overlooked is that articles themselves act as thinly veiled advertisements. Certain headlines read as buzzword salads that are designed to drive clicks rather than provide solid info
I feel for the news providers, wish journalism writ large could break from the system of profit-seeking that forces these changes upon everyone
