The person who leaked information about Trump’s tax returns got more time than Trump did for fraud

He got more time than almost all insurrectionists received

He got more time than Roger Stone, Paul Manafort, and Charles Kushner for tax evasion and for funneling Russian money to politicians

…Tell me how the system isn’t set up to protect the rich and powerful again?

🇺🇸

@flexghost It's absolutely setup to protect the rich and powerful. All that whining about the "Two Tiered Justice System" neglected to mention that it benefited the people whining.
@IncredulousMike It’s insane republicans are still on that soapbox of how they’re being persecuted
@flexghost so much for the “witch hunt” 🤨
@flexghost He was a whistleblower. We should thank him.
@flexghost It's almost as though corruption is an American cultural value.
@flexghost If Trump is reelected he'll probably push to have this guy executed.
@flexghost let me open with this: I completely agree that we have a two-track justice system and two-track government designed to favor and entrench the already wealthy and powerful. That said, privacy laws can be pretty serious where they exist. Take HIPAA, for example. If a hospital gets hacked and PHI is taken by the attacker, that hospital is on the hook for multiple millions of dollars in fines. I imagine that's the rationale here.
@conditional_soup @flexghost there’s another legal principle that government secrecy should never be used to cover up crimes.
@conditional_soup @flexghost It's not the same rationale at all. He didn't hack the system or open a backdoor so that anyone could access anyone's returns, he only leaked info on a man who, btw, had promised on *multiple* occasions to release his. I believe he is still the only US Presidential candidate to refuse to do so. And I'm not against *any* consequences. The contractor is obviously not going to be hired to work with sensitive data where confidentiality is expected.
@JohannasGarden @flexghost
I get all of that. And this isn't a defense of Trump, I think that Trump is the very bottom of a long trend we've had towards increasingly bad leadership, and we're all worse off for having had him, even the smart (/s) wealthy people that think they truly benefitted from his administration. It was still Trump's choice, shitty person though he is, whether he wanted to release that information or not. All that info SHOULD be public for our politicians, but it isn't.
@flexghost , we need a federal law, possibly a constitutional amendment, that absolves anyone who publicly releases information about crimes.
@flexghost I wonder how many years he would've gotten for having classified documents in his bathroom? (Of course, both are serious breaches.) :(
@flexghost Exactly. The rich protect their own.
@flexghost some times is arbitrary

@flexghost

It absolutely is…

Welcome to capitalism 2.0.

@flexghost These are the cases that jury nullification is for.
I make sure to explain the concept to everyone who mentions they’re being called for jury duty; it’s a small but easy way to push back against a broken system.

@flexghost 🤑 When the system should punish persons for Obstruction of Justice, it shouldn't commit Obstruction of Justice itself, shying away from holding wealthy criminals & their accomplices to account.

@flexghost
Whistleblower protections aren't broad enough.
@flexghost should have got a medal.
@flexghost Ask Reality Winner about 1 page vs the Trump Collection of documents.

@flexghost

Charles Littlejohn really took one for the team.

@flexghost Law and order 😆 What a joke the greedy and selfish make a mockery of this system.

@flexghost

It doesn't matter if it's Trump's tax returns or yours. It's a matter of confidentiality no matter who it is. Leaking that info is against the law and the penalty is high.

@flexghost ROFL at the literal reading of the headline, separating Trump from "rich people"
@flexghost this is a sad example of the inequalities in the justice system. Justice seems to be for sale far too often. We should hang our heads in shame.
@flexghost
This guy should get pardoned for doing a public service.
@flexghost and epstein's kid-fucking rich friends still roaming free.
Because the rich are always protected. Whole system serves them.

@flexghost there is a word for this.

OLIGARCHY

@flexghost Preach! Just got muted by someone on mastodon because I was being a doomsdayer or something for pointing out the injustice.

@flexghost

This is risk management by the patrician donor and shareholder class: cannot risk that type of information into the public realm, cuz then the plebeians might get a clue.

@flexghost
You're right, living in a rule of law country isn't always fair. Rich ppl have access to the best representation $ can buy which can make a difference. This man was convicted of fraud in a criminal court where trump was found guilty in a civil court which doesn't carry the penalty of incarceration. The courts aren't finished with trump yet, far from it actually, so we will see how it plays out. Remember the woman in TX who got 5yrs for voting while ineligible?
@flexghost It's the best system money can buy.

@flexghost off topic

Why does the sign look like a cards against humanity cars

@flexghost
I wish that all tax returns could be public records.
@flexghost And it’s such a shame because Trump was gonna release his taxes in two weeks!
@flexghost same with reality winner and Chelsea manning
