Did you know you can easily search through your own Mastodon posts?

Just include from:me in the search field.

Instead of this, you can include in:library to show posts you have interacted with or written yourself.

If you want to search through posts of a specific user, include from:username (the full username, including the instance)

If it doesn't work, have a look at this:

A follow-up post regarding the Mastodon search tips: If the search options don't work, the reason might be that your Mastodon instance maintainer hasn't implemented Elasticsearch. Also important: do not use capitals anywhere in the search conditions. E.g.: "From:me" doesn't work. @metin

This is great info: thank you. I played with it. It works!

@metin This doesn't seem to work on my instance but maybe I have spaces in the wrong place?

And when you say from:me is that literally the phrasing or should I replace the me with my Mastodon name?

@Kay It's simply from:me , and there shouldn't be a space in the mentioned operators or usernames.

Here's a page where you can read more info:

How do I search for stuff on Mastodon? | Fedi.Tips – An Unofficial Guide to Mastodon and the Fediverse

An unofficial guide to using Mastodon and the Fediverse

@metin Yeah @Kay this doesn't work for all of us in all instances. It all fails for me in mine too & my instance's admins said they're looking into why it doesn't work for me in mine
Configuring full-text search - Mastodon documentation

Setting up Elasticsearch to search for statuses (authored, favourited, or mentioned), public indexable status, and accounts

@val Who do you mean by "They"? The volunteer admins who run each individual instance?

I'm happy not to have too many fancy extras on Mastodon even if I'd like to be better able to search my own posts. I don't want Mastodon to turn into Twitter.

@Kay Yes, the volunteer admins. The toot I replied to said the sender's admins were looking into why it doesn't work. So I linked to the documentation of what they need to do if they want to make it work, to save them time in case they didn't know.

It wasn't an injunction for these admins to do it, let alone every admin. I myself didn't enable full-text search on my instance.

@val @ModernDayBartleby @metin @Kay it's about to get easier (depending on your choice of client): https://mastodon.social/@pachli/112841729532862981
@nikclayton @val @ModernDayBartleby @metin Lack of searchability could be a feature not a bug. So far I'm in two minds about which I prefer.
@Kay @val @ModernDayBartleby @metin Fortunately, Mastodon provides settings you can adjust that control whether your account or your posts appear in search results.

@metin Thanks for the page link.

It says no spaces so would that mean
from:meSearchTerm? It seems more intuitive to put
from:me SearchTerm but that may be wrong.

Actual examples on layout help.

FWIW I'm old enough to have learnt coding by punching holes in cards. One space wrong and a programme wouldn't run.

@Kay A space is needed between an operator, such as from:me, and the search keyword(s).

For example:

from:me love

@metin Thanks.

On further checking I see, Search Options Not Available (on this instance).

I'm fine with that. I shouldn't use shortcuts when I don't really need them 🀷

@metin Thanks for clarifying too. I'm always relieved if the answer to something not working is because Computer Says No, rather than me being unable to follow simple instructions (which sometimes happens).
@Kay No problem, I know how uninstructive some tips can be. πŸ™‚ And I grew up with 8-bits computers, copying pages of BASIC listings from paper magazines, only to discover that there was an error somewhere, and the program wouldn't run. πŸ˜…
@metin 😯
Something I've been looking for for a long time
@metin Looks like it depends on which instance you are. I can't do it.

@metin sometimes I wonder does Mastodon has search at all.

Tried to search for "6502" and did not got even my recent post.

@hrw Searching for "6502" should result in having a brand new Commodore 64 sent to you. I'll suggest that to the Mastodon developers. πŸ˜ƒ
@metin they can already put it into nearest e-waste trashcan.

@metin

Jeez this is marvelous !

I've been mumbling about thus si much !!

@metin Really useful, thank you!

'from:me' works for me on mastodon.me.uk and on social.tchncs.de

@metin thank you! Do you know if there’s a way to search through only posts that you’ve liked?

@weheartgames πŸ‘

@metin Thank you! I scrolled down and found that in your replies immediately after posting... πŸ˜… Looks like there's no way to search your favourites.
@metin Thank you, good info to have!
@metin Didn't know that. Just tried it and works great here. Thanks! :)

@metin Thanks this is helpful!

It works on vmst.io when searching that instance and across to another instance using the full username. Though I suspect some instances won't allow searching

@3x10to8mps
I would assume that the same rules apply as to conventional search: if you didn't opt in it's only hashtags
@metin
@metin doesn't work. though should have been expected, "Easily" and "Mastodon" never really go together do they
@zanzi πŸ™‚ Check the thread. It depends on a few factors.
@metin Nice! Thanks for that. I do this all the time, but I’ve been using β€œfrom:@[username].” You’ve just saved me a bunch of typing every day!
@metin yes, I've done that before :)
@metin
Except that searching for posts Just. Does. Not. Work. on my Web client. Usernames, sure. Content, bupkis.

@n1xnx @metin Depends. On. The. Server.

The admin has to enable it.

@avirr @metin
And unless I stand up my own server, I have next to no chance of that happening.
@metin doesn't full text search need to be enabled server side? I found Elasticsearch was extremely resource intense and not especially effective

@smeg Don't know the specifics, sorry. I only read it in this page when looking if it's possible:

@metin thanks! This will come in handy
@metin I appreciate this #FediTip Like, I knew I could search through my own posts, but I couldn't figure out how. Lol
@metin Now, if only I can remember this when I need it.
@metin Ooooh! Thanks for the tip!
@metin Oh this is neat. I got frustrated enough with search I started using hashtags to organize posts I thought I'd want to find later lolol #IndiPTips
@metin
Can you also do a search for a post that was in an interaction between you and a specific person?

@pascaline Good question. Maybe you can find your answer in this article?

@metin
Not in this post but thanks!
I tried adding both from:me and from:@user@server but this doesn't give me anything even though I know it's something I could find πŸ€” No results besides a 'Error 500' once (so special, right? πŸ˜€)
@metin this works! Thanks!
@metin does this work if your posts are unlisted/otherwise excluded from full text search?
@WizardOfDocs Good question. Maybe posts don't need to be set to searchable if you're searching in your own posts? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ I've got searchability activated.
@metin Works on sfba.social along with the rest of the full text search I forgot all about, so extra thanks!

@metin It is worth mentioning that the search string is case sensitive, so β€œFrom:me” isn’t working, but lowercase is. So it could be that autocorrect is not your friend in this case.

This could be a nice feature in the @IceCubesApp user interface.

@metin @JasonPerseus Holy smokes, this is great! Thank you for sharing!
@metin It apparently depends on some option on the instance (on mine, it tells me it is not available).
@bortzmeyer Have a look at the discussion, you might find more info.
@metin note that this only applies to instances with full-text search enabled. Especially low-resource ones will not enable this.
