Remember: Mastodon has a notes field for profiles afaik they are not shared with the other person (I imagine your admin might be able to see them though but do NOT quote me on that) And yes, if they follow proper account migrating procedures (as in: make a new account they transfer their follows to, not an alt for like baseball or gamedev or something) the note migrates too and prefaces the note by noting they migrated from [previous handle] You can do things like: * Write down that this person is older than you by 3 years * Write down this person's favorite color * Write down the names of their pets * Write down the grievances and judgments you have with them I personally don't recommend it for birthdays (As Calendars work better for that in my opinion) but if you have something you don't want to forget about them, like their favorite movie or something, Add it to the personal note!

@adele There's also Brutaldon
https://brutaldon.org/

which is very usable within Lynx & other minimalist browsers.

Brutaldon

A brutalist, web-1.0 web client for Mastodon and Pleroma. Supports text-only browsers like Lynx, older browsers, as well as the latest mainstream browsers. All JavaScript is completely optional and progressively enhances the core application.

If you want to use this feature, make sure that you are on a #Mastodon instance that updates fairly regularly.

My previous instance, for example, was stuck on 4.2, and the admin made clear that he had no interest in putting in the effort to maintain it further.

You can see your current version on the bottom of the web page. If the version is too old, you might consider migrating to a new instance. Sure, your old posts will remain on your old instance - but your connections and bookmarks will move with you.

#feditip don't just block me, defed my whole instance we are all like this
Here's something really useful I've found.

One of the great things about the Fediverse is being able to follow hashtags.

But.

If someone puts up a post using that hashtag, and no-one on your instance follows that person or anyone who shares it, it won't appear in your feed.

This is particularly common if you're on a small or single-user instance.

Here's the solution.

First, follow @_followback

It will follow you back.

And then tags.pub bot then reshare all of your posts that use hashtags.

So if you do a post with the hashtag #Fediverse, then @fediverse will share your post.

Here's where the magic happens.

The tags.pub bot will do the same thing to everyone else who follows that followback account.

So if you follow @fediverse, then you'll get a feed of everyone who uses #Fediverse on the Fediverse.

And you'll see their posts even if no-one on your instance follows them.

And it works for all hashtags.

Just put the name of the hashtag, followed by @tags.pub

So @tech follows all posts using #tech, for example.

Or @news follows all posts using #news

#FediTip #FediHelp I don't know any languages apart from my native English, but I follow and enjoy reading several Germans whose posts I used to see here with a "translate to English" link below. I don't see that link anywhere nowadays. Don't know if it happened when I changed instance from m/social to writing.exchange. Don't think so, but I mention that in case it makes sense to anyone who knows more than I do about this stuff. So, please can anyone help me get those links back? Thanks.
#FediTip I am looking for a instance recommendation that has a high word-count limit like for example 2000 words.

#feditip if you're discussing food toppings, be sure to include bottomings #onhere #everyvoicematters

#PROTIP for the weekend:

if you go to your Notifications tab and click the arrows icon at the top right you can expand options and disable notifications for boosts and likes

this way you can stop staring at your own posts with that fish-looking face while you read them over and over every time someone new boosts or favorites them...

you will be saving a lot of time, congratulations 🎉
