"When you drive a massive SUV you’re saying three things: I don’t care about the environment. I don’t care that I’m more likely to kill pedestrians in my car. I don’t care that there isn’t room for my car and others to co-habit smoothly on London’s streets."

Ugly, vulgar and a climate catastrophe — we should ban SUVs in London or tax them to the max

What upsets me most about life in London today? The endless proliferation of “luxury flats” marketed abroad while ordinary Londoners can’t afford to rent a basic home? Yes, that upsets me. The fact that so many young people in the capital are so utterly devoid of manners that they see nothing wrong with listening to their phones on public transport without headphones? Deeply upsetting on an existential, future-of-mankind level. How about grown men often nearly knocking me or my children over on the pavement with their giant-man-baby electric scooters? Yup. Pretty upsetting.

@TheWarOnCars often times it's worse than just "I don't care"
@TheWarOnCars - "Simply owning an SUV in London is, in my opinion, an act of aggression."
@tom_andraszek @TheWarOnCars I think the same applies to the very loud super sports cars with well over 300 hp. These are also a statement that no longer fits our times. And if the richest 3% continue like this with their ships, planes and helicopters, climate change is supposedly unachievable!
@TheWarOnCars usualy I think the biger (and pricey, big and cheap don't count) is the car, the smallest is the weener of his owner.
@akiran_n @TheWarOnCars
What about the gigantic not-quite-semitrucks that people drive these days? The trucks with hoods that are 6 feet above the ground?
@akiran_n @TheWarOnCars TBH, this isn't just a weener owning thing. So, explain that.

@TheWarOnCars it's my understanding that "The War On Cars" is a right wing dog whistle for a liberal conspiracy to deprive conservatives of... I can't continue even with a /s. However I only mention this because using such a phrase may attract nasty trolls.
@TheWarOnCars Ronald Reagan started the SUV infestation.
@TheWarOnCars I wouldn't love cars regardless but if I did, I would not love SUVs or trucks. Some cars used to be beautiful but that started to change when SUVs were introduced. I thought they were ugly and useless from the very beginning.
@TheWarOnCars Wholeheartedly agree 👊
@TheWarOnCars i really don’t understand the popularity of SUVs. they’re neither elegant nor beautiful, and aren’t much more practical than a smaller hatchback, but eat a lot more. why do people like them so much?
@caffeine @TheWarOnCars I've had to rent SUVs once or twice when my car was in the shop and no regular cars were available. They could only accomodate five people, just like my Accord, and didn't seem to be able to carry any significantly larger cargo. As opposed to the minivan we rented specifically so that six of us could go on a trip together, which was able to carry an entire couch once the seats had been lowered into the floor.
@jtwcornell91 The Accord holds a very special place in my heart because of how it combines utility with elegance, something that most SUVs lack. And yeah, minivans are just on another level when it comes to storage + seat space, too bad I hardly see them around anymore.
@caffeine having previously owned a conventional Accord, I'm impressed at how well the hybrid does at keeping the battery from taking away a noticeable amount of trunk space. In contrast, the Civic hybrid I test drove a while back had a much smaller trunk than the conventional Civic I had back in my bachelor days. Honda also makes oversized crap, but at least they're still making just-big-enough sedans too.
@jtwcornell91 older Civics were royal at trunk space. another Honda that has surprisingly large carry capacity is the Jazz. seems like a tiny hatchback, but you can cram a whole lot in there, especially with the backseats folded. on the note of the Accord, i didn’t even know they had a hybrid option, as the only ones i’ve spent time with are the type-S 2002 and 2008 Accords
@TheWarOnCars You forgot the 4th: Compensating for a small you-know-what.
@TheWarOnCars The saddest part is that what qualifies as a massive SUV over there is called “midsized” here and stands no chance in a head on collision with the monster pickup trucks that are our country’s best selling vehicles.
@PedestrianError @TheWarOnCars I feel like the Cybertruck design was a huge missed opportunity. The front hood and windshield are clearly a ramp. If it were smaller and the front of the hood and rear of the vehicle extended lower, then in a collision with it those huge SUVs would just be launched up into the air over it.

@TheWarOnCars
That pretty much sums up excessive wealth ....it's more or less a big fuck you to everyone.

Look how little I care about my over consumption while others starve.

@TheWarOnCars It’s amazing how the author of this piece can simultaneously be so precisely correct and also utterly insufferable.
@TheWarOnCars "Those who drive SUVs are often vulgarians whose sole purpose in life is trying to show they’re richer than other people"
100% agreed!

@TheWarOnCars

They're also saying "I'm compensating for my insecurity in my masculinity" (or something complementary if female) and the makers know it: these testostermobiles are commonly styled like Darth Vader, with grilles of sharp projections I call people-graters.

@TheWarOnCars What do you expect? They're Tories.
