240 million functioning PCs/laptops will be chucked into landfills.
Because #Microsoft has managed to convince consumers that computers cannot exist without #Windows.

80% of the world's data-centers and infrastructure don't run on Windows. If you're thinking of throwing away a computer, please send it my way.

Windows 10 end of life could prompt torrent of e-waste as 240 million devices set for scrapheap

As Windows 10 end of life approaches, analysts are concerned that millions of devices will be scrapped due to incompatibility

@jkn my windows machines also run linux, and when 10 is no longer an option, so is the widows partition.
@jkn I'd be happy to assist with repurposing these PCs for non-windows use as well. I'm sure many underprivileged folks could benefit from such a donation.
@jkn The world is powered by Unix and Linux servers and devices. Most don't realize it. People need to realize you decide when hardware is no longer meeting your needs, not the companies selling them.

@jkn

Sorry for the digression but I don't suppose you know anyone that re-cycles/re-conditions ink-jet printers? I have a Brother MFC-J435W Ink Jet that I really don't want to end up in a landfill. It needs some work to get it going again (it sat for a long time in a storage box).

@jkn oh no you don't! Send it MY way. Seriously the amount of powerful hardware people just toss in the garbage is insane - but I want it, not JKN they deserve nothing! ;)
@jkn Go Linux, you'll never go back šŸ‘
@jkn Yep Lubuntu is keeping my old Toshiba Laptop alive & functioning as a basic dev' machine
@jkn Sent the journalist an email noting that he should have suggested alternatives.
@jkn I'm looking forward to the flood of cheap and nice gear on eBay and IT fleet auction sites

@jkn Be careful what you wish for, lol.

"Shipment of 10 million PCs of questionable quality. Sign here. They are on palettes. Where is your forklift?"

@jkn not to mention, that the "compatibility" issue is completely bogus and can be patched out with ease: If you create your installation USB drive using Rufus from an original, vanilla Win11 installation ISO image, you can select a mode to remove / disable those parts that make it "incompatible".

@datenwolf @jkn
Yeah, that makes me so angry as well. On my 10 year old machine, W11 runs just fine with a small "hack".
This really is something that the EU and other authorities should be looking into - planned obsolesce on a major scale if ever there was one.

But then again, the whole direction MS is driving Windows is in itself more and more disgusting and should be looked into.

Linux is fine and dandy, but not a solution for everything so far... (I really tried hard)

@thomashelzle @jkn for me personally there's a single specific application critical to my work, which works on Windows only: 3DS SolidWorks. For everything else, Linux and FreeBSD just work fine, including games (thanks Valve!).
@jkn
I've been using a laptop that I found in the dumpster for #freecad and #darktable work.
but I could use a pc with a GPU, any kind is fine. It would be better that what I have right now.

@jkn sounds like a bunch of laptops with pretty good compute are about to be real cheap.

Sounds like I’m gonna have to resurrect my laptop Beowulf cluster.

@jkn thx for the update. My dad doesn't know what to do. Because newer versions (the cheaper ones) don't support fix internet cables anymore (or so he told me)
I know for sure that my Linux Mint will still support this and all other drivers (like DVD rom) for as long as needed.
@jkn ugh. And most of those machines probably still work perfectly fine. Horrible
@jkn Plus all the printers scanners etc. without a driver for W11.
@jkn One of the reasons I moved to GNU/Linux. I am tired of Windows supremacy in consumer market.
@jkn @dexter Google's been doing a great job of making Chromebooks ewaste themselves too. https://www.engadget.com/chromebooks-short-lifespans-are-creating-piles-of-electronic-waste-063314306.html
Chromebooks' short lifespans are creating 'piles of electronic waste'

Chromebooks may not be such a good deal after all, according to a new report called Chromebook Churn from the US Public Interest Research Group.

Engadget
@endrift @jkn @dexter schools use chromebooks because they're already strained on budget (taxpayer funds baby) and they just need low initial cost, while young students can be very abusive with school devices.

When I was in middle/high school, I saw old Dell PCs in use everywhere, even Pentium IIIs, that in 2010.

Unlike what's claimed, Chromebooks DO allow Linux to be installed, but with a custom BIOS.
@jkn
I thought people were bypassing the TPM 2 requirement of Windows 11 now? Still, Linux would be better...
@jkn to add to this whole useful thread, regarding to the bootable stick idea, you can install Ventoy on your stick and use as much as your stick can store of OSs without reburning each os solely and individually and you can use a cheap 2.0 usb stick as its w/r speed won't affect your system performance at all
