I know, I'm late for #freecadfriday but I'm currently switching back from Autodesk Fusion 360 to #FreeCAD to get rid of my Windows VM and Autodesk's cloud #enshittification stuff.

I still have to (re-)learn the workflow and tools but just finished my first two models: protective caps for the Zeiss 7x40 NVA German military binoculars. Printed with TPU. My printer somehow messed up the edges on the eyepiece protection but they work 👍

My small #freecad weekened project, hub caps for some nice rims. Guess for which car :)

I designed a case for the TzxDuino Reloaded v1.5. It is 3D printed in black resin and I think it turned out pretty well for my first design in #FreeCAD.
Seems like #FreeCad has come a long ways since last looked at it years ago. Fantastic to not be temped to use corpo software that's on the road to enshitification. Now i just need to learn to use it.
Success! It took a little Python scripting and help from Claude, but I'm able to import #FreeCAD models into #MuJoCo. Now it's time to start developing some balancing algorithms...and not the usual PID kind 🤓 #robotics #AI #EdgeAI

Coming back to this for v2 a couple of weeks later... it's often good to come back with a fresh head to something. Basically I was having a struggle in #FreeCAD... it won't offset on bezier curves, so I used a shape binder instead... but it also has problems offsetting, it kinda works, but also kinda doesn't, and it definitely doesn't for the scale & direction of offset I want.

Today with fresh eyes I reflected on this and... BAKA! (yes, exactly that exclamation is what popped to mind.)

InkScape, which is where the line art was tidied up, can do this with zero problems.

So easy.

I often find using multiple tools is the answer I want.

(I still find it easier to do a lot of 2D work in LibreCAD for example, I have learnt to get along OK with FreeCAD sketcher, but it just isn't my favourite mode for 2D work.)

@claudius Sadly I started a few projects on #freecad link branch which seems to have been abandoned. The files are not compatible with the main branch.
But in General freecad development has done leaps in the last few years. Now if only the maintainers of some specialty workbenches could catch up...
New current collectors just dropped. Testing out LaserBoost in Spain. Pretty cool you can just upload a .step file from #FreeCAD and be auto-quoted for sheet metal manufacturing.
#FreeCAD has really come a LONG way. This was relatively straightforward. The new UI improvements are certainly making a big difference!
