You can't actually test a vendor exit. Not really. It's never cost-effective and never the real thing.

Ask the orgs that failed over during Katrina and couldn't fail back. Most of them tested their DR plan every year. They were still surprised, because annual testing only validates the path you thought to test. The failure lives in the one you didn't.

So the move isn't a drill. It's awareness.

It's the Small Stuff That Locks You In

Data leadership in the Cloud and AI age.

James Sargent
Frankreich liefert Deadlines.

Realitätscheck #ITBeschaffung: Öffentliche Auftraggeber in Deutschland vergeben jährlich über 350 Milliarden Euro. Davon fließt ein substanzieller Teil in IT. Trotzdem gibt es keine zentrale Strategie für Open-Source-Präferenz, keine verbindlichen Souveränitätskriterien in Ausschreibungen, keine systematische Nachnutzung. Das Vergabebeschleunigungsgesetz beschleunigt den Status quo. #Vergabe #opensource #Digitalpolitik #Deutschland #vendorlockin

The Billion Dollar Brick: AUKUS and the Illusion of Sovereign Capability

U534 U-Boat submarine on display, by Dave Verwer, on Flickr "U534 U-Boat" by Dave Verwer (CC BY-NC-ND 2.0) A few months ago, I wrote about the growing graveyard of “smart” home devices — expensive bits of plastic and silicon that turned into bricks the moment a corporate server in Virginia or San Francisco was switched off. It’s a personal annoyance when your $300 security hub stops talking to your lightbulbs. Scale that logic up to national defence and critical infrastructure, and the stakes shift from a darkened living room to a crippled nation.

The Billion Dollar Brick: AUKUS and the Illusion of Sovereign Capability

Australia is spending billions on AUKUS submarines and classified AI systems it cannot inspect, maintain, or control. That's not sovereign capability — it's a very expensive dependency.

openDesk kostet Hochschulen 45 Euro pro Nutzer und Jahr. Microsoft bietet Office kostenlos an. Der Vergleich klingt absurd, ist aber systembedingt: Microsoft subventioniert den Markteinstieg, Deutschland finanziert Souveränität marktkonform. The Case Against the Inference API

Depending on a remote inference endpoint means depending on someone else's off switch: their uptime, their pricing, their policy changes, their access to your data. This essay makes the case for sovereign on-device inference and a signed, post-quantum, offline-verifiable record you can hold without trusting the vendor.
