99 years and our media hasn’t learned enough of the lessons it needs to.

@georgetakei

A lot of what passes for journalism in the US is merely well worded wishful thinking

@paezha @georgetakei
And the rest is just press releases being passed off as reporting.
@georgetakei The mistake the Germans made with Hitler wasn't putting him into prison. It was letting him out.

@karlauerbach @georgetakei
It wasn't even really a prison

In the month he was there he had over 300 visitors, could converse freely, didn't have to work, and used the time to write "Mein Kampf"

Erstmals veröffentlichte Akten: Wo Adolf Hitler „Mein Kampf“ schrieb

@georgetakei Thankfully Trump will die in prison since he's old.

@georgetakei
It's during his imprisonment at Landsberg - where he spent a comparatively comfortable time in privileged conditions, by the way, thanks to the authorities going easy on him - that he wrote his book "Mein Kampf".

@georgetakei
Here is the entire NYTimes on that date. Also worth a look

@georgetakei “will retire to private life and return to Austria” — wow, about as wrong as it gets.
How Journalists Covered the Rise of Mussolini and Hitler

Reports on the rise of fascism in Europe were not the American media's finest hour

Smithsonian Magazine
@georgetakei hopelessly naive of them
@georgetakei we are living in VERY DANGEROUS times! 2016-2023 reminds me of learning about WW2 while stationed in Germany 🇩🇪 1973-1977. Nazi SS Officer who once killed for Hitler gave FREE RENT to US Soldiers on his property outside Nurnberg. I was a sergeant and learned a great deal about that period. 1929-1945. Horrific for Germans as well as THE CULT that followed. They suffered in the end! No good came of it. It was ALL ABOUT HITLER not the people!!! Trump is SICK. “SYHPILIS of the Brain “
@georgetakei never depend on national news to actually report anything of substance. They are billionaires propaganda outlets.
@georgetakei Hitler spent less time in prison for the Beer Hall Putsch than EV Debs spent in prison for speaking against WWI. Debs also spent more time in prison for that than USAmerica spent fighting WWI.

HITLER TAMED BY PRISON
Released on Parole, He is Expected to Return to Austria.

BERLIN, Dec. 20 -- Adolph Hitler, once the demi-god of reactionary extremists, was released on parole from imprisonment at Fortress Landsberg, Bavaria, today and immediately left in an auto for Munich. He looked a much sadder and wiser man today than last Spring when he, with Ludendorff and other radical extremists, appeared before a Munich court charged with conspiracy to overthrow the Government.
His behavior during imprisonment convinced the authorities that, like his political organization, known as the Völkischer, was no longer to be feared.
It is believed he will retire to private life and return to Austria, the country of his birth.

@jrdepriest @georgetakei The populace has always admired popular criminals, from Butch Cassidy, Billy the Kid, Jesse James, Al Capone, Lucky Luciano, etc., to Hitler, Stalin, and now Putin and Trump.
@georgetakei The first year Trump is in prison may prove if he could survive supervised in functioning as an inmate. The worst night is the first night.
@georgetakei Lightsout Donald! Hitler was hardened by WWI and younger.
@georgetakei hopefully history DOES rhyme and Herr Drumpf will spend the remaining days in prison!
@georgetakei 100 years and we still haven't learned as humans who repeat history.
@georgetakei That was the NYT's "Dewey Defeats Truman" moment. Only way worse.

@georgetakei An interesting point that many people overlook are the time scales at which these kind of connected events happen.

Tons of people disregard the warning messages that some other informed people publish because "nothing happened yet" during the much smaller scales of weeks or months... while it usually takes years for these disasters to unfold and manifest at their highest.

@georgetakei
And Donny Dumpster hasn’t even spent a moment behind bars. (Yet.)
@georgetakei Susan Collins would say he’d learned his lesson.
