Are you using Dropbox cloud storage? You do not want 3rd party AI technology partners to have access to your Dropbox files? Flip this switch, which is on by default. Go to web->account-> settings- 3rd party AI. Please turn it off. Please boost so everyone know how bad this move is … 😡
@nixCraft honestly, I never used Dropbox and I don't planning using it
@nixCraft Why do you even use Dropbox, so many alternatives today.
@hypnoglow @nixCraft because of my lazyness, what's a good cross platform alternative that you can recommend?
Proton Drive: Free secure cloud storage | Proton

End-to-end encrypted file storage from Switzerland that lets you securely back up your files on the cloud, access them anywhere, and share them with anyone.

Proton
@hypnoglow @nixCraft maybe I’m grandfathered in to a ton of free space and it’s convenient. Maybe my entire family uses it. Lots of reasons to use it. The psa still super helpful to those who have accounts.

@wesleyradcliffe @nixCraft Seems legit!

Personally I prefer to change tools if i see improvements, and not become attached 🙂 But your case is definitely valid.

@hypnoglow @nixCraft the only somewhat functional way of syncing books to Pocketbook devices wirelessly
@hypnoglow
I'd be interested in #Dropbox alternatives. Which do you recommend? I'm looking for something small, free, shared with two or three other family members. Not MS/Google, of course.
@nixCraft
@nixCraft Is this option present for the users within the EU too? I cannot find it there. I guess I should just wipe my account at this point, I haven't used it in literal years.
@vifon yes. People from EU also getting it
@nixCraft @vifon Interesting — I'm going through my Dropbox settings over and over again and I can't find this option anywhere… (EU)

@jrychter

Many options are region dependent, under some jurisdictions they must be not enable to no point asking, under some they don’t have to offer the choice so don’t ask either.

@nixCraft @vifon

@jrychter @nixCraft @vifon me too. I don't see it.

I have General ➔ Early Access set to No.
Maybe that's why?

@deborahh @jrychter @nixCraft @vifon same, I don’t see it. I’m in the US.
@vifon @nixCraft I have an account in the EU and it doesn't appear.
@vifon @nixCraft I'm from the EU and for me the switch is off by default. Maybe a GDPR thing that it must be opt-in?
@moritz_negwer @vifon @nixCraft
We don't see it, too. Could someone in the EU provide a screenshot, please or describe the path to the option? Thank you so much!
@nixCraft Off by default by for me but still good to have checked.
@nixCraft Weird, I'm not seeing that as an option in my settings...
@aburtch same here, not sure if this is good or bad.
@nixCraft @nixCraft The PSA is certainly welcomed, but trusting such ‘switches’ to turn off 3rd party access is a bit naive. https://media.giphy.com/media/13qrxRt2tsurGU/giphy.gif

@nixCraft I do not see such an option 🤷‍♂️
@nixCraft luckily I'm using Nextcloud with my own storage and local server
@melroy @nixCraft Same here (actually I use 4 different NC servers).
Dropbox once was a rock-solid sync service but became feature-overloaded with the years, plus they limited access to 3 clients. NC is now an even better replacement.
@kater_s @nixCraft 100% I used to use Dropbox back in the days at school. Fun when it lasted, but I will never go back to those cloud services anymore. If I need more storage I just download more RAM and download more SSD. :)
@nixCraft If you're really worried about privacy, check Proton Drive instead
@nixCraft
I can't find that option in my account, but I also never chose to get early access to new features, maybe that's why I can't find it.

@nixCraft

I do not find this anywhere in my desktop or WWW Dropbox.

@nixCraft rather flip the switch to use @ownclouders
Go to https://doc.owncloud.com/ -> Server -> Infinite Scale -> Quick Guide
Redirect Notice

@nixCraft
They probably later pull a DeviantArt and introduce their first party AI you can't opt-out from.
@nixCraft oh fuck that noise. Found it using mobile browser. It was turned on.
@nixCraft For those not seeing this:

@keithpjolley @nixCraft

Must not be available for everyone, as I don't have the AI tab.

@keithpjolley Thank you for this. They really hid it.

@colorblindcowboy they sure did. i had about given up. i thought i'd read that dropbox encrypted the data on their servers so even they couldn't read it. this apparently was either bullshit or i read that incorrectly.

I can't even begin to think how giving third-parties access to my data is part of their plan. they can't be trusted.

@keithpjolley @nixCraft I've a personal account and can't see anything anywhere like that, even if I type the url in directly. 🤷‍♂️
@nixCraft
What about encrypting the data before storing there?
(Ok, I know. Too complicated for most Computer users.)
@nixCraft @lisamelton are you using Dropbox cloud storage? STOP. Problem solved.

@nixCraft thanks for the warning!

Have to say, it doesn't show up in the android app. What it shows is a button next to 'don't sell my info to 3rd parties' turned off by default, which is ass and was clicked faster than the speed of light, sons of bitches.

Edit: and no that wasn't there when I first started using Dropbox I have to add

@nixCraft it's 2023 and time to use open source alternatives that respect privacy.
@nixCraft And this is why everyone should just use Syncthing =P
@nixCraft @lisamelton Thankfully if you have a company account the administrator can turn this off for everyone. No need to hound your staff.
@paulc @nixCraft @lisamelton
TBH if they turned on for business users by default id say that admin shpuld look for a new solution.....
@jagdtigger @nixCraft @lisamelton We use in a very limited way with freelancers who only seem to know how to use Dropbox.
@paulc @nixCraft @lisamelton
Yeah thats one hell of a PITA situation, but id still try and move away from it. Doing things like this silently and opt-out is one hell of a big@ss red-flag. And after this no way in hell im trusting them that that switch does anything at all....
@nixCraft For anyone who wants to contact Dropbox and give them a piece of your mind about this move, here's how you can contact them: https://help.dropbox.com/account-settings/customer-support-levels
How to contact Dropbox support

Find out how to contact Dropbox according to your plan and account type. Discover different support options, support hours, and response times.

@nixCraft the Internet needs a consent protocol and every company should stop assuming that one bit of consent implies consent for *everything*

@nixCraft NEVER created an account with them ( #Dropbox ) after they appointed Condoleezza Rice to their Board of Directors.

/You kids! 👈 Have to say that.

CharCha - A Conversation

@nixCraft You sure it's on by default? I just checked my settings, and it was off. Pretty sure I've never touched it.
