Apple's Journal app is here.

As a long-time Day One user (8 years and counting 👵), I was *really* excited when Apple first announced they would be building their own journaling app.

As it turns out, Apple's approach to journaling is very interesting. But in its current state, it’s being held back by several critical shortcomings, especially if it truly aims to bring journaling to a wider audience.

Apple’s Journal App: Journaling for All?

I’ve been keeping a journal in Day One since at least 2015, and I’ve got to say, the practice has become very engrained in my otherwise chaotic daily routine. Whenever I get asked about journaling, I always say that it’s a habit that can take any form you like. It can take place in a

@nileane @macstories Great review! It’s an exciting time for those of us who practice journaling. Hopefully more people will give it a try now.

Also, keeping it up since 2015 is just impressive. 😄

@devondundee @macstories Thanks!

I can't believe it myself honestly 😅

@nileane @macstories Very nice review. The only bad thing is that now I have to give the app a try. 😉
@nileane
Nice. I also used day one for years while I was working to log hours on specific projects etc. Then I retired. I don’t need a journal app anymore but am glad  brought one out. It will get better.
@nileane @macstories Nice! I used to be a big Day One fan myself but over the years it's gotten buggy and harder to use (i.e. The new inspiration feature doesn't work at all for me and just gives me a blank screen). Plus, once they went subscription with new features I gave up and stopped using the app. So I'm really looking forward to a more OEM app that I feel a little safer storing thousands of memories. Although, I probably will wait till there's an import feature to really get started.
@nileane @macstories Thank you for sharing this trick, this secret occult knowledge! My life will never be the same! #ios #tip

@nileane @macstories @viticci

I never got into day one. What I want is the automated entry logging the iOS ecosystem could bring. When did I visit the doctor, see that show or movie, ear at that restaurant, shop at that store, where did I stay on vacation and visits, when did I have flu, etc.

@nileane I'm really hoping tags and links come soon because that is very much a feature I'd use to enrich what I'm journaling (even though I have other places that kinda cover this, like Raindrop).

@nileane @macstories

Baffling that they opened up an API for apps to grab suggestions before they opened up an API for apps to _contribute_ suggestions

Maybe this is more about the API/suggestions model service than the Journal app itself (a default consumer of those suggestions)

@nileane awesome review. I really appreciate your perspective. As a Day One user, I love the freshness that Apple is bringing to journaling with their V1. I would love to see Day One evolve a bit more in the future. It has started feeling a bit clunky to me. I still trust it and write in it daily.
@ozlubling Yea Day One isn't as smooth as it used be. But I also still trust and like the product a lot.
@nileane do you think you use the Apple journaling app at all or just suggestions within Day One?

Great article, @nileane!
When I heard about the API, I assumed it was for Apple only. Great to hear it's available to third party options as well!

Kinda untypical of Apple, but it seems really clever!

@nileane @macstories @viticci „… select it, swipe horizontally on the actions tooltip“ - whoa, you can *swipe* on the action tooltip?! That is so much better than tapping that tiny arrow several times. Thanks for the tip!
