Fortify.

I dig it.

@neurovagrant Dude I dig this. I've been looking for a replacement word for this concept when working with students on campus. This is solid, I'm doing it.
@neurovagrant Cool. I started using Mam up instead. Because mothers are powerful.
@neurovagrant There is the potential of a much more rewarding non-gendered future ahead of us. The possibilities are endless
@peterbutler @neurovagrant there are infinite ways forward but only one way back. That's why we have a moral obligation to defend the rights of those less privileged than us. ✊
@neurovagrant Yep, using this. Much more fun and not degrading as hell.
@neurovagrant we have used HTFU for decades, but I like 'Fortify' better, as that links well with 'requires intestinal fortitude'
@neurovagrant
As someone who is currently hardcore addicted to Baldur's Gate 3 with her husband, I approve
@slothrop
@neurovagrant That's a powerful word
@neurovagrant I test drove "gonad up" for a very brief period figuring everyone has gonads... Until my trans-woman mentee *gleefully* (cackling, even) pointed out that she was lacking. Oops. Lesson learned.
@neurovagrant can I also make a suggestion to grow a spine not a pair?
@neurovagrant Fortify is great - it has so many good definitions.
@neurovagrant "Steel yourself!" is a good one too.
@neurovagrant
Also gender-neutral, which is good.
@neurovagrant "Fortify Yourself" is very good. How about "Gird yourself!"?
@neurovagrant Always liked Dak'kon the Zerth's third tenet of the Unbroken Circle of Zerthimon from Planescape: Torment. "Endure. In enduring, grow strong."
@neurovagrant
I really like this. For more intransigent people who want to use pre-existing phrases, "toughen up" is a pretty good alternative.
@neurovagrant now if we can yeet the word guys, as a general term for people, into the sun, we’ll be all set.

@DrSuzanne @neurovagrant I am not keen on β€œfolks”. Everyone I know that starts with β€œFolks,” has been told to move from β€œguys,” almost all of them in IT, and over 40.

I am working with a really progressive small company out of Boston, one of the owners starts every call with β€œhow we doing”, it’s learned but seems more genuine than β€œFolks,”

@neurovagrant Perfect. It just took about three seconds to become a thing here too.
@neurovagrant This is making me think of the SPG song _Mecto Amore_: "It's like baking an illogical pie / the time has come to fortify-y-y!"

@neurovagrant

Cool. Going on a Post-It note immediately.

FORTIFY!!!

@neurovagrant I love this. One of those small language changes that can make a big difference.
@neurovagrant it's no wonder hateful people are the most boring people on earth. being asked to not use an offensive phrase could be an opportunity to do something fun and wholesome

@neurovagrant Back in the day, whenever I was annoyingly ruminating over a small decision, my late wife would repeat one of our favourite lines from a comedian Russell Peters but,

"Be, a man!"

I recalled the humourous situation Peters depicts in the bit and that got me free of the rumination loop. I still hear her saying it today when the ruminate process starts.

@neurovagrant

Everyone is talking about their #ttrpg Warrior shouting this. I prefer thinking of the arch wizard invoking it as a command. A Word of Power.

"Fortify!"

It's like the ultimate buff spell.

@pseudonym @neurovagrant I mean, there literally is a "Power Word Fortify" spell in DnD, but it's not on the Wizard spell list (just Cleric n Bard).
@neurovagrant
Het heard this phrase a long time ago: harden up!
And the profanity laden HTFU.
as with this Australian sketch.

@neurovagrant I love it!

But fortify is of course not enough, we also need to use frost shield! #DOS2

@neurovagrant in Sweden we use the term "bit ihop", which directly translates to "bite together", probably a reference to the wooden piece patients bit on during surgeries.

I quite like that term.

@neurovagrant "In the second phase of the fight against Devastator, you should start by casting fortify x5 on your entire party to buff defense and strength"
@neurovagrant I'm going with Margo from #TheMagicians and her "ovary up".

@neurovagrant My mind immediately goes to Fortify Restoration

Which does marvelous things when looping.

@neurovagrant I lost a lot of respect for someone running the beer booths for the local Pride, handing off responsibilities to a lesbian and telling her to "man up". That's just doubly insulting.
@neurovagrant so if I’m tired I’m simply potion-less?
@neurovagrant
I think fortify sounds awesome. πŸ‘πŸ»

I would suggests "suck it up", ideally while offering them a straw.

prop comedy usually helps in these situations... right?

@neurovagrant

@neurovagrant Yes; and who, again, is Tify? πŸ€”
@neurovagrant You think fortify is good? Just wait another ten years until you can fiftify!
@neurovagrant when trump was first elected my friend said β€œget sturdy y’all!” And it was an absolute lifeline
@neurovagrant Okay... I've used 'cowboy up' since I was a kid. But from now on...
@neurovagrant That's a great alternative.

@neurovagrant nah, that blows. We can do better.

"Bite down" is way more visceral.
