Hey, did you enjoy Baldur's Gate 3? Do you want more of the same design philosophy with fresh characters and underlying systems? Good news! GOG has Larian's Divinity: Original Sin II Definitive Edition on sale for $11.25.
You don't need to have played any of the previous Divinity games, and I won't argue you should. They're very much... of their time, and much harder to enjoy these days. D:OS2 does a great job of building out its own world independent of the existing lore.
D:OS2 doesn't use the D&D5e system or the Forgotten Realms but don't worry, the system they use is very good.
This game was why they got to build BG3. But that doesn't mean it's just an audition; it's a wonderful story and game by its own merits.
My review after finishing my 1st playthrough of #DivinityOriginalSin2 #DOS2
I really enjoyed it & will definitely play again. The companions & story choices were engaging & sometimes tricky, just as i hoped. I didn't connect emotionally quite as much as with BG3- I suspect that's down to the lack of cinematics/animated cutscenes. That's not a criticism of DOS2 - it's just a reflection of its age & budget - and i still loved the art style & writing.
1/6
I am at that stage in DOS2 where as a new* player I am overwhelmed with the area and don't know where to go in what order.
*I started it three times when it was new, and it never clicked with me. Turns out that ignoring the overwhelming opinion that you should play as an origin character makes wonders. I am far more invested playing a custom character.
Look I figured I wasn’t actually getting to ascend to Divinity at the Well. But Dallis popping up and cutscening me so abruptly still felt upsetting. I mean I didn’t even get to loot Alexander’s body.
Also I’m in Arx now and I think I might have accidentally sold a piece of the Devourer’s set. Somewhere. At some point. I have 2 pieces now and I’m almost certain that I had 3 at one point 😳
Damn my obsessive inventory management
What the fuck?! WHY IS EVERYTHING ON FIRE?!
I’ve just now met Malady in #DOS2 and I am certain of 2 things:
1. I am in love with her
2. This will prove to be ill-advised
To the boat!
Feel like I want to restart my #DOS2 run. Re-doing nearly 30 hrs of gameplay isn’t necessarily a prospect I relish, but then neither is redoing this Alexander fight a 3rd time because my builds are sub-optimal & this game is rude enough to deny me a Withers.
Not even sure why I’m hesitating tbh - now I think about it I don’t believe I’ve ever played an RPG *without* restarting about 20 hrs in (when I’ve learned enough to realise I want to do things differently)
14 hrs in to #DOS2 and I’m loving it!
Much as I love 5E I’m really enjoying the flexibility of not being restricted by classes. I’ll be interested to see whether that creates more or less replayability than BG3 (which I’m still in love with, and build crafting for, over 2,000 hrs in).
I even like the magical/physical armour system, which I know is widely unpopular. I like having to plan my build decisions & combats around it.
