brainstorming the worst linux setup ever:
- gentoo based
- all packages are binaries from nix
- snaps for desktop apps
- uses kde
- bloated beyond comprehension for no good reason
- on macbook (for neofetch screenshot)
- powershell as default shell
what do you guys think
i will create this and it will be GOD'S OS (better than windows 7)
i couldnt decide which linux philosophy i liked best so i actually just went with all of them ❤️
@torepang can do worse than kde probably
@josh i just thought of the most like "bloated" thing to use, it'd probably be funnier to use something ancient like CDE
@torepang @josh use no wm
just xterm
@tomo @torepang matches the gentoo better aesthetically
@torepang whats the progress in this
@sneexy i've actually been too busy but i definitely want to do it at some point in the future i think it'd be funny as fuck

@torepang this is horrid

do it

@ShadowJonathan the only thing stopping me is getting a macbook.

@torepang ask tim apple for his allowance

say its for the funny

@ShadowJonathan noo he had a salary decrease he can't afford to give me macbook anymore :((

@torepang >uses kde

nope that's actually not a bad idea lmao, consider openbox without any customizations or even a compositor (eg picom)

that's actually painful

@halva i should use CDE.
@torepang cde is usable OOTB, openbox is a straight up torture
@halva one of the criteria is "bloated for no reason" so i use KDE for the setup and then unconfigured openbox for the screenshot!

@torepang nah kde isn't bloated, you're really kinda missing here i think

i would wager gnome performance is unreasonable for the functionality (but it's within usable vanilla)

but if you add some ridiculous extensions you've got yourself a power hungry monster

also you can try adding a tacky theme which would make using libadwaita apps an eyesore as those aren't themable

@torepang like you can go so hard with gnome if you want to make it absolutely stupid
@halva noo i'm not saying kde for bloat, rather i need something to use for actually configuring the system (because i really dont like tiling wms) but i'll just leave it installed to bloat up the system. if i dont think its bloated enough i'll just begin installing more DEs and other stuff.

@torepang

$ echo $EDITOR wine notepad++.exe $ _
@flisk or libreoffice --writer
@torepang thank you, this post pushed my headache right out of the "i don't need an aspirin" zone
@torepang please liberate me from KDE
@torepang I will soon move to nix os with with hyprland while using nvidia 1050ti (it will 100% work)
@trans_caracal good damn luck !! my 1060 wasn't happy doing hyprland !!
@torepang maybe nvidia patch will work. If not I will get x window manager or something. Something other than KDE Plasma (bloat)
@torepang how about no desktop and the console font is a bitmap comic sans clone
@anselmschueler yesss and its not even a monospace font.
@torepang run the system through Xen but have only one guest with full machine access
the file explorer is wine explorer.exe
@torepang terminal is xterm because xterm sucks
@torepang (apps are still snaps tho, e.g. coreutils)
@torepang nix shell starts in every directory the shell launches a guix shell that installs all guix packages
@torepang daemon that will kill any process named flatpak
@thememesniper AND i also have flatpak installed.
@torepang what's wrong with kde
@hypermug1 i changed my mind i'm gonna install kde to configure the system and then make the screenshot on some unconfigured tiling wm

@torepang sounds like the "great ideas" in the air which had been rebuked eons ago

(KDE has mostly ended up fine though)

@torepang can I get edge as a flatpak on it?
@MTRNord what an amazing idea.
@torepang and now I wonder if it also on linux tries to constantly annoy/steal from people or if thats a windows special (can I activate it via a flag maybe? 🤔 )
@MTRNord not 100% sure but i do remember a bug in vscode a while ago that would force it be used as the default file explorer. wouldnt be surprised if anything like that happened (on purpose or accident)
@torepang you're missing systemd & systemdhomed hahaha
@89q12 gentoo has a systemd spin, it can be done.

@torepang You forgot some more #cursedness:

- compiled against #MSVC and #Microsoft #Libraries, so it requires #VisualStudio on #Windows to be built and requires all apps to be linked against these libraries.

- no user accounts, everything runs on root with no password.

- SMF (Solaris) as Init & Config System.

- Keyboard is hardcoded German Neo-2 Layout.

- uses #LILO / #LOADLIN on a #FAT12 Filesystem for boot, requiring a #MSDOS Boot Floppy!

- Only supports #NTFS as filesysten.

- All manpages are in Simplified Chinese.

- System clock is local time, not Unix Time.

- Only supports #ISA & #PCI, not #PCIe or #USB!

- curl points to wget, wget points to curl.

- emacs points to neovim, nvim points to emacs.

- forced UTF-32 encoding fir everything.

- Filenames, Directories & Path must only contain Emojis and . (or / for paths).

- Files are not overwritten but instead a new copy is made and the latest version is symlinked to the original filename - like in Files-11 for VAX/VMS.

@kkarhan @torepang Redhat 7 an Anaconda ate my BIOS. (Not that dangerous those times dips and jumper)
@torepang please install an old version of darling (the one that loads XNU/Mach as a kernel module) enable the android binder kernel modules and use the Mach-O version of nano or emacs from OS X to configure your system
@torepang
- uses Windows 11 KDE theme
- OS runs as a VMware virtual machine
- browser is Arc (wine)
- uses 360 security software
- LANG=ja_JP.sjis
- keyboard remaps OPTIONS with CTRL
@torepang Texteditor is Notepad run with Wine 👌
@torepang missed opportunity not running it in WSL2 with all of KDE using Microsoft's cursed reverse RDP X server implementation
@torepang if it's Gentoo-based, why use binaries from Nix??
