OH: A coworker just shared a term she uses to describe meetings that go astray when certain coworkers bloviate. “Non-consensual TED talk.”
@zerofox Siiiiiiick burn. 🔥
@zerofox seen. When I ramble on for more then a minute, I often end it with "Thank you for attending my Ted-talk"
@for @zerofox 💯 I use this exact joke to defuse my anxiety about hogging the mic.
@for @zerofox I do this sometimes but I think the joke might work better for me. 😉
@for @zerofox is TED short for tedious? I don’t work in an office setting any more but always hated meetings when I did because certain people would always talk and intimidate others (not necessarily on purpose) and those more timid would clam up and brew.
@zerofox @cstross I honestly can't think of a single meeting I've been in that wouldn't have been both more productive and less stressful as an email.
@lispi314 @zerofox @cstross Yes, but OTOH my coworkers have demonstrated repeatedly that they ignore all but the first paragraph of any email.
@fishidwardrobe @cstross @zerofox For what it's worth, they're probably not paying all that much more attention in meetings either.
@lispi314 @zerofox @cstross I actually participated in meetings which would not have been possible over e-mail, this does not mean that these meetings were not soulcrushingly boring.
@zerofox I feel this in my bones
@zerofox Wow, much better than the 'bonsai lecture' I've been using occasionally.
@zerofox 💯 stealing this. Thank you

@zerofox Oh good golly, I FEEL this. I drop a project with a ominously looming hard deadline in order to arrive five minutes early to the meeting so I don't waste anyone's time and we spend the first 45 minutes discussing the various experiences of last night's weather, followed by plans for the weekend and the ins and outs of a tax that will not take effect for nine months. I play nice (reads 'happy and interested Zoom face) but inside my head I'm smashing my face into a wall repeatedly.

Wow, that got a little graphic! 😳

Not a lot of individual bloviating for sure but very non-consensual.

@zerofox A director or VP has joined the call and will spend 40 minutes discussing this brilliant document they produced to help "guide us".

The one full of inaccuracies that we could have, you know, just read in 5m offline.

Gosh I needed this term. And bloviate. Burning to memory.

@zerofox *term adopted*

It's awesome.

@zerofox @danilo Thank you for choosing to come to this mandatory meeting.
@zerofox ah, that's a nicer variation on my "logorrhoea", if there really is content in the talk
@zerofox great expression. Also, i had never heard of "bloviating", thanks for the new word. But I directly thought of "broviating" and surely I'm not the first one to think about it?
@stragu lol I’d not thought of that, but I’m adding it to my vocabulary
@zerofox
I've used this joke in Praetorium right before the Gaius fight in FFXIV before.
@lockelyfox hah, no way, that’s awesome!
@zerofox
Yeah! If I have a talkative party of non-sprouts, I like to drop in a "Gee I hope no one traps us on an elevator with a surprise TED Talk." Then I wait a beat for him to drop, "Oh hai Gaius."
