Finna whip up some savory fried breadfruit things. I'll decide after it's made whether to call them fritters, tots or puffs. 😆 #cooking #growYourOwn #homesteady #eatlocal
Ok! They aren't fritters, tots OR puffs. They are ulu (breadfruit) nuggets, with a little bit of tot-ness.
I steamed and roughly mashed the HOME GROWN breadfruit, added tiny diced onion, garlic, duck egg, goat milk, creole seasoning, pepper, salt, dried parsley. Rolled them into nuggets, rolled in corn meal, like catfish. Fried in olive oil/peanut oil blend. The long ones have mozzarella cheese filling, like fried cheese, only the outside is the mashed breadfruit mixture. If you've never had breadfruit, at this stage of ripeness, it's kind of like potatoes. A+++ will nugget and/or stuff with cheese again. 👍🏽👍🏽

LMFAO I see the alt text typo says "goofball sized" and not "golfball" sized, but you know what? imma leave it. 😆
Breadfruit is more filling than potatoes. Very nutrient dense and satisfying. It's a starch that doesn't immediately turn to sugar. It breaks down much slower. And the best part? Plant once, harvest forever. #permaculture #foodforest
Imagine planting potatoes every year when you could plant one ulu tree. I have 4 ulu, 2 breadnut and a dug dug (close relative of both)
Only my ulu have begun to fruit. The others are struggling with jungle encroachment, as so many of my zone 3+ trees do.
😳🤦‍♀️ I'm just one person. 🤷‍♀️

@saltphoenix i showed off your ulu to some of my colleagues on zoom the other day. they loved it.
@mk30 raw or cooked?

@saltphoenix i showed them the whole breadfruit before i even cracked it open.

the pattern in the skin of the breadfruit is called a voronoi pattern and i find that nerds & math lovers enjoy seeing that in action XD

@saltphoenix Breadfruit is called ulu in Hawai'i, so when you see ulu on a menu know you're getting some tasty breadfruit! 🤙
@Hawaii werd. I use them interchangeably, depending on my audience. These ones are maafala variety, I also have fiti. I'd love a Hawaiian variety, I'd like to have an air layer from one that's tried and true, if possible. So it'll probably come from someone I know, eventually. I'm afraid to buy a "Hawaiian variety" from someone I don't know. I'd rather it come from a tree I do know. 😅
@saltphoenix I've rarely met food that includes cheese that I didn't like so I'd at least try them lol
They look and sound good though.
@Tom yeah there's nothing bad about them. Maybe I could try a baked version.

@saltphoenix Reading about it is making me jealous lol

"Breadfruit is one of the highest-yielding food plants, with a single tree producing up to 200 or more grapefruit-sized fruits per season, requiring limited care."

Food, lumber, paper and rubbery glue from one plant that grows without a lot of work? That and bamboo are almost enough to convince me the lack of cold and snow could be worth it lol

@Tom I tried to surround myself with the best trees and plants. 🥰

@saltphoenix There aren't many places I'd be interested in traveling to, but if I did, I'd love to come see what you've set up over the years. I'd even ignore my rule about avoiding places where the ground might explode lol

Is there a short version of breadfruit trees that'd grow in a greenhouse?

@Tom you can prune the crap out of them. It's good to top them anyway, they can get way too big to harvest easily.
@Tom it mostly looks like a wild jungle, if you don't know what tropical food looks like lol

@saltphoenix lol which is why I'd want to go to your place rather than just any jungle. I'm smart enough to know when I'd be stupid and need someone to point out everything lol

In case you were worried though, there's zero chance of that 'if'.

@Tom I live on a volcano. Very little worries me. 😅
@saltphoenix As much as I wouldn't want to live on one, a volcano is still better than most people lol
@Tom agreed! The volcano, I respect. Most people tho? 🤔😆😆😆
@Tom the volcano is the least of my "worries" 😅
@saltphoenix these look gorgeous!!
@mk30 they are a big hit over here 😁
@saltphoenix wonderful! and i can confirm about the starch being different from potatoes. i definitely don't get the same sugar infusion + hunger in a few hours.
@mk30 so good. Happy belly type food.
