Now would be a good time for all European politicians and journalists to setup accounts on Mastodon.

Musk considers removing X platform from Europe over EU law - Insider

Elon Musk, owner of social media platform X, is considering removing the service formerly called Twitter from Europe in response to a new internet platform regulation in the region, news site Insider reported on Wednesday.

Reuters
@Gargron I saw a community note on the site earlier saying this was false does anyone have proof
@millions @Gargron it's Elon Musk. The man is as sharp as marbles

@Jam123 @millions @Gargron

Between Elon's flip flops, about faces, and outright lies, who ever knows if what he says is true?

@Jam123 @millions @Gargron as sharp as when he passed through a digestive system?
@millions @Gargron people have been saying he'd do it for a few months and he hasn't yet
But even if it's not gonna happen, journalists should leave Twitter anyway
@millions @Gargron If this was false, why would #Reuters mention this?
@dzedus @millions @Gargron Actually it looks like Reuters is quoting Business Insider, but they do not have any links or sources, just "rumored" (Edit: checked various articles, everyone is referring to Insider, no other proof)
@normis @millions @Gargron Good point. But still - if a rumor gets circulated by Reuters, one may want to take it seriously
„Völlig falsch“: Musk bestreitet Rückzug von Twitter-Nachfolger X aus der EU

Der Tech-Milliardär weist einen US-Bericht zurück, wonach er ein Ende seiner Plattform X aus der EU erwägt. Unterdessen ermittelt die EU-Kommission gegen den Twitter-Nachfolger.

Der Tagesspiegel

@millions @Gargron Yes and no.

There were rumors, that's true.

They were denied after a day.

A test bubble and idle threat, for the moment.

BUT: That does not solve Elon's problem that #dodo it completely utterly non-compliant with DSA/DMA. And there is no trivial way to make it compliant without investing significantly in moderation task forces.

@millions @Gargron
The EU puts major obligations on very large platforms only, because these obligations cause significant costs. The idea is that if you reached that scale, you are profitable enough to afford these measures.

But #dodo was not very profitable before boy genius got his hands on it. And all we know, turning #dodo into Truth Social 2.0 has made it much worse. But they still have the legacy of accounts and thus the very large platform classification, ROTFL.

@millions @Gargron What's the difference? He is Mr. Inconstancy. He makes up his mind by his mood. Should we ever trust him? I don’t do it. Why should Europeans (Media, Government, Companies, and all others) pay a penny for this stupid theater of hate and misinformation? The NPR Radio story shows, leaving Twitter has almost no impact for traffic. Everyone should have the courage to leave Twitter. Goodbye, we are done with this creep!
@millions @Gargron I hope it is false, but it’s a shame it’s very believable and I don’t doubt that he probably thought and said these things, even if he doesn’t do it

@Gargron @binaryphile

He’s bluffing.

@davidhmccoy @Gargron @binaryphile

Bluffing is a tactic where you threaten something you don't want to or can't do in order to get a better result from someone else.

So who exactly is he supposed to be bluffing? The EU isn't going to care if he pulls out of Europe - quite the reverse.

@davidhmccoy
Another theory is that he's fired or otherwise driven away all of the people that could implement and verify a compliance regime.

Yelling "I won't do it! 😤" Is a way to cover "I can't do it 😞"
@Gargron @binaryphile

@davidhmccoy @Gargron @binaryphile Zuckerberg tried that and got appropried response.

Even that clown can't think he's more indespensable than facebook/instagram/whatsapp.

@Gargron he's probably just sabre-rattling to try to put the EU in an awkward position so they back down on some things. I'd love to say it won't work, but...

Of course, I'd love to be proven wrong.

@bitflipped @Gargron It won't work. There is no threat for the EU in that. Twitter employs next to no one here, spends nothing, probably doesn't even make money in the EU market.
@Gargron oh so this is what’s happening why there’s been a mass migration
@Gargron musk would be doing Europe a solid.
@Gargron good idea gargron those are two groups of people that fedi desperately needs more of

@Gargron If Musk dare to do that, frankly in my opinion, many will indeed comes to Fediverse platforms, but others will just use other proprietary platforms such as Threads, Bluesky, Facebook, Instagram,... and have a high risk of those platforms doing these things again.

People do find Fediverse platforms so confusing to use, and because of brandim recognition and network effect, they will not recognize the problem of centralized platforms

@natsume_shokogami
True, I can't even figure out who is responding to who in my timeline. And what about threads? I find bluesky a lot easier to use.
@natsume_shokogami @Gargron Threads also isn't available in Europe.
@Gargron
The EU is about to block X for promoting misinformation, so Musk is threatening to pull out before they can shut him down? Fine.
@Gargron #conservative politician can stay on there. Right audience for them there and here they can't push their agenda on people not following. I won't tolerate their crap on my timeline.
@Gargron Pra que quieres los politicos aquí?

Periodistas aun, pero periodistas no mamporreros.
@Gargron DSA is horrible. Give the politicians the power to tell who is right and who is wrong. Pretty bad that people think its a great thing to let politicians get more power and citizens less power, just beacouse they dislike Elon.

@Apan @Gargron

Hello from Europe!

It might shock you to discover that we most prefer our social media without Nazis and Fascists, and our internet without ripoffs - and that we passed laws to prevent these things.

Why Americans fiercely want to be robbed and lied to on the Internet is a matter of bafflement to me at least.

The answer of course is we don't -- we've lost control of our government to fascist corporate interests.

@TomSwirly @Apan @Gargron

@Apan @Gargron Australia recently avoided legislating similar (at least I think it was similar?)
@Apan @Gargron "citizens" don't have any power over twitter. This is about the power of governments versus corporations. As imperfect as they might be, governments are still a much representation of citizens than large corporations run at the whim of someone like Elon Musk.
@Gargron mastodon needs to upgrade give direct message and quote posts feature.
@arunshah240 @Gargron

you might want to try
#Firefish, it has those features
@Theriac @Gargron i want mastodon too.

@Gargron

Musk really not reading the room.
@Gargron How about quickly adding quoting so they won’t have an excuse to not join?

@Gargron now is the second best time.

The best time was yadda yadda yadda

@Gargron No one should remain on that shit site.
@Gargron be prepared for new user loads on the instances from Europe
@Gargron later on he said, he will not.
Unfortunately, all are going to Bluesky.
Reasons for not chosing Mastodon are already communicated.
