@art_histories @TomSwirly @Katika @Kuttenfunker @tante which is more dangerous?

The waste from nuclear reactors?

Or the waste from fossil fuel plants?

BECAUSE WE ALSO DON'T DEAL WITH THE WASTE FROM FOSSIL FUEL PLANTS. THERE IS NO SAFE WAY TO STORE IT AND IT IS KILLING THE PLANET.

Nobody has more contempt for liberal democracy than people who've never lived without it.

Google's emissions are up over 50%, Amazon builds huge data centers powered by 75% natural gas.

Remember all those posts telling us that "AIs climate impact isn't that bad" supported by some really funky math/perspective and/or numbers Sam Altman invented?

Here's the actual impact.

"AI" is a fossil fuel technology.

At Amazon’s Biggest Data Center, Everything Is Supersized for A.I.

On 1,200 acres of cornfield in Indiana, Amazon is building one of the largest computers ever for work with Anthropic, an artificial intelligence start-up.

The New York Times
Lisbon has a demonstration against the lack affordable housing.
The situation is serious but a demonstration outdoors with the temps there reaching 37ºC. 😮
they're gonna kill him, aren't they?
"We used to drill up oil, which destroyed landscapes & communities, & then we'd refine it, which destroyed more landscapes & communities, then we'd burn it, which would poison everyone & heat up the whole earth, & then we'd stick the public w/ the cleanup bill." "Why?" "To drive to Walmart."

With the new NATO '5% of GDP' standard the Dutch government just committed to spending 13% of the entire government budget on military and military-adjacent stuff*.

It seems most journalists just report the 5% and not many make this calculation to a percentage of the actual government budget.

How's this reported in your country?

edit: I've added a table with numbers for all NATO countries in a child post.

I have watched my life burn to the ground and started again from scratch many, many times.

I believe in second acts and second chances.

I want to say this clearly for anyone who needs to hear it: it is possible to survive radical, unexpected and unwanted life changes, to start again, and to build a new life that is worth living.

@TomSwirly @the_wub @jmcrookston @anne_twain The US as we know it would have to fall before that'd happen, it's a founding principle.
