If the penalty for crime is a fine then the law only exists for the lower class.
@flexghost If fines were calculated as (1 / <hand size>) * <net worth as declared on social media>, we'd be all set.
@flexghost Even though it'll get paid from rubes' donation either way, that fine is missing at least a 0.
@flexghost the only thing this teaches Trump is that threatening the court only costs $5000.
@LadyDragonfly @flexghost it only costs $5k so far
@plinth @flexghost Trump doesn't understand "so far". He struggles with understanding the reality of the present tense, let alone the future perfect.
@LadyDragonfly @flexghost I have no problem with repeated FAFO on his part.
@flexghost @eva_chaos
A fine is ok, but should be proportionate to wealth. I agree a small fine to the rich is just a fee.

@flexghost

This might have worked better.

@flexghost Very much this. Lock the tosser up and actually make him feel accountable for his actions. Bluster and bravery be damned.
@flexghost Five grand? How about they cut his putrid tongue off? That's the only thing that will keep his vile mouth quiet.
@flexghost the person he threatened should get the $$$, and it should be a hell of a lot more than that for the 'forbes list' mango loser.
@flexghost The post made him more than 5 grand in donations DAILY, I'm quite sure.
@flexghost “Punishable by a fine means legal for rich people”
@flexghost $5,000 is nothing to Trump, not even a slap on the wrist. The real penalty is the stated threat of higher fines or jail time for a repeat offence. Trump is possibly dumb enough to see that as a red flag challenge.
@flexghost Fines should be a percentage of net worth.

$5k is nothing for Trump, a trifle.

Heck, I could withstand a $5k fine and I’m not wealthy.

It’s more than a year’a salary for many of the world’s population.

@josh @flexghost the Finnish system for fines kinda works this way, since the size of the fine is scaled by your income to have the impact.

BBC News | EUROPE | Nokia boss gets record speeding fine

A director of the Finnish telecommunications giant, Nokia, receives what is believed to be the most expensive speeding ticket ever.

@flexghost There's a strategy behind what the Judge is doing. Plus we can't deny that he was the Fmr. POTUS. So logistics for a night in jail would be insane.
@flexghost MAKE IT 5 MILLION DOLLARS
@flexghost the fine should be a % of income - I say that since the 80s
@flexghost This indeed angers me! A 5,000.00 fine is nothing for the wealthy. This absolutely is a law only for the lower class.
@flexghost A lower class person wouldn't even get the the fine, they would get prison time for doing a fraction of what Trump does.
@flexghost Any fine imposed by the court would simply trigger another round of donations from his base. It's a bottomless pit as far as Trump is concerned. He could issue NFTs featuring himself at the 12 stations of the cross and ask his price.
@flexghost If the reason for a crime is the content of a post for extremism and you complain about it not being sentenced to jail, then you are pro-system.
@flexghost Agreed, but there's very clear law on how contempt charges are supposed to escalate, and the judge is doing a very good job of not fucking it up and therefore giving Trump ammunition to use on appeal.
@flexghost Were I the judge, I'd square it every time he violates it so the defendant learns a little math. Perhaps it would help him better valuate his assets.

@flexghost

Wow, five whole thousand dollars? Gosh. He must be reeling.

@flexghost Unless the fine is proportional to wealth.

@flexghost

trump won't pay it anyway; his supporters will. The fine should be more like a milski! That's when it starts to hurt. carry on

@flexghost in my experience the law only applies to poor people. Capitalism is inherently unjust. Maybe Trump can be an exception but most likely he'll get more of what he wants: attention.
@flexghost unless it's in ratio to income like speeding tickets in some European countries which can be $250K for instance

@wifsten @flexghost Exactly.

The only reason we use absolute units of time for imprissonment is that all people have more or less same amount of time available on this planet. But wait a few years for therapies to evolve. Wouldn't it be nice if rich people could live 1000s of years 😝

Using absolute units of income for punishnent is gross injustice.

@flexghost $5000 is a joke. It should be a million.
