⚠ Meta will apparently to move to a "Pay for your Rights" model in the European Union!

EU users would then have to pay $ 168 a year if they don't want to give up their fundamental right to privacy on Facebook and Instagram. This move is inacceptable.

Meta (Facebook / Instagram) to move to a "Pay for your Rights" approach

In order to bypass the GDPR, Meta apparently plans to move to a "Pay for your Rights" approach

@noybeu what the fuck? And this is legal, how?
@jonossaseuraava @noybeu "if necessary for an appropriate fee" is in the law

Is it disgraceful? Yes, but illegal, unfortunately not

Best to just not use Facebook.

@noybeu I wonder how they came up with the €160/year, although I expect it's somehow either a dishonest or disingenuous reflection of what privacy-violations of privacy-oriented users is worth.

Given that users incentivized by privacy protection already use ad blockers and hate ads, I think it's worth less.

But it's probably not a good idea to signal otherwise to for instance share holders?

@noybeu doesn't that violate EU law on consent?

@noybeu €14/month. In the range for services like Netflix.

This is a good move - Establish a return to the business model where you pay for the services you use. Makes the value proposition more transparent, so might help people to decide whether Facebook is actually worth using. And it could open a competitive market for social networking where the winner isn't "whoever has everyone's data", it's "who has the service worth paying for".

@noybeu

It is perfect if the free option will be forbidden and banned from Europe!

@noybeu honest question . What is the most value of FB, Insta, etc to subscribe ? Birthdays and hate ?
@noybeu if the free/no privacy option is banned then i think we have a deal

@noybeu This is completely acceptable, the funny part is if you choose to pay you will fund the Meta infrastructure to continue watching users behavior for advertising.

It's the exact same thing as Youtube Premium.

@noybeu It's a private company, as long as it complies with the law, they can do as they please.
Is the move morally despicable? Yes.
Should we at last learn how to avoid toxic products and tell them to fuck off once and for all? Also.
@noybeu @oliver_schafeld This sounds like an added ‘for pay’ option. Privacy for Meta is a bit of an anathema. My main concern is that I have little confidence that they can deliver such a feature.
@noybeu Are you sure? Because there’s no way that’s legal.

@noybeu

Unacceptable, you mean

(Apologies)

@noybeu reason 74,628,615 why I will never be found on Threads
@noybeu I imagine the social media landscape in Europe will be a whole different world compared to that of the US by the end of the decade

@noybeu

Yeah, but will Americans be given the choice to buy our rights back for $168 a year?

@noybeu A good case for Schrems IV!
@noybeu
What boggles my mind is that there are people posting here
that this move is ok.
@zedaardv @noybeu ok, I'll bite, why wouldn't it be? Meta is a private company; if you don't want to pay for their services (either via data tracking consent, OR paying cash in lieu of), you don't have to use their service. There is no law or 11th commandment of "thou shalt use Facebook."

That the EU gets the option to pay beats the situation in the US which is "use it with tracking or don't use it at all."
@noybeu Congratulations, I signed up as member now :)
@noybeu this lack of a concept of privacy is exactly why I deactivated FB a decade ago
@noybeu You already gave up on your privacy when you signed up for the service. No fee whatsoever is gonna change that. The only way out is to quit the service, the sooner the better. Conveniently, quitting is (still) free of charge.
@intermobility even if you quit their services, it still wont make any difference, there is no where on the surface of this earth #facebook cant access or snoop
@pDanijel While you can’t entirely escape their sniffing into your private life, you can still significantly reduce your exposure by avoiding their services. It’s one step forward on your way to protect your privacy, and not the least important one.
@noybeu Don't use Faceache or Instagram and Don't pay at all 😅
@noybeu Just stop using those platforms, you'll save valuable time you can spend on something actually useful.
@noybeu given how much of their tracking is baked into the share buttons on other people's sites, how much will it cost a non-user to retain their fundamental rights?
@noybeu stop using Facebook. Problem solved.
@noybeu @exterm why is this seen with such a negative light? I pay for youtube premium or fastmail email hosting. If I could get a paid version of instagram that does not track me, that sounds pretty good! today I’m forced to being tracked and shown ads, hence why I don’t use the network at all.
@noybeu i still use facebook for the meme groups and for folks who i don't see on other platforms but this would deffo be the end of any use at all.
@noybeu Why is it unacceptable? It’s their product - they can charge whatever they want for it. If customers don’t want to pay, then don’t. And wake up to a better life.
@noybeu Good news. Perhaps that will convince a lot of people to avoid the Mate trash. Can't see many people paying it...

@noybeu What the fuck?

Every day this dystopian hell gets worse.

@noybeu

Not sure if this would help in the EU:

@noybeu 0J'ai envie de dire : Chiche !
Et après : Bye-bye Meta !
@noybeu can we just stop using Facebook/Instagram at all?
@noybeu great news. The only reason I use the service is because family in Europe uses it. Now they may get off of it and then so will I.
@noybeu I bet someone else could do it for half that. A lot of the infrastructure costs are to run AI to do targeted adverts..if you remove that requirement you cut the capex&opex a lot...
@noybeu how much we make per user : 15$/y
How much user will be ready to pay 10%
So we will make it 160€ to make even more profit
@noybeu why should their products be free? What else is free in your life?
@noybeu by instagram cya not paying you a penny
@noybeu Do it! Anything reducing the grip of meta on social exchanges will reduce democratic interferences and risk. Just do it.
@noybeu Meta are conveniently ignoring that advertising doesn't *require* a loss of privacy or taking away rights. Plenty of places do advertising that doesn't need to know anything about the viewer/reader/user.
@noybeu #honestquestion but who in this time & age uses #meta products?!
