Sunak vows to stop 20mph zones and review LTNs https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-66965714
@rosamundi Great graphic! Very strong illustration of the benefits of 20mph zones.
I fear it's not going to work on Sunak or the Daily Mail. The life is just a number to them, they've already decided that pedestrians, cyclists and those who think we should at least try to destroy the planet a little more slowly (or not at all?), are the enemy and must be fed into the machine.
I keep thinking of that poor girl who was killed by the 4x4 that ran over a school picnic.
Bicycles are the answer.
@rosamundi The thing that graphic can't capture is the number of people *that aren't hit at all*.
A few nights ago a jogger clad entirely in black inexplicably ran straight across the road in front of me like a kamikaze ninja, realised his mistake and then just froze like a rabbit in the headlights. Emergency stop, no contact. I can't swear I was doing twenty exactly, but it was definitely 20ish. At thirty I think I'd have struggled not to clip him.
@rosamundi
E = ½mv²
I think the pandemic showed that the average goober doesn't understand what an exponent is.
@rosamundi For people who use sane, standard, IS units, 20 MPH ≈ 32 km/h.
Removing 30 km/h zones to please stupid car drivers who rather kill people to "gain" a ridiculous, insignificant amount of time (that will be spend at red lights/stop sign anyway…), than "be late", is utterly stupid…
@devnull @rosamundi I thought that UK had finally adopted the SI (I stands for INTERNATIONAL) units.
Well, the sickos’ country (aka the USA) had signed the Metre Convention in 1875, and they still use the moronic, illogical and non-standard old UK imperial units…
@rosamundi Always thought that car traffic should be elevated and leave ground level for pedestrial and animals.
Freeways system created the concentration death camps for animals as being enjailed by walled roads they can not escape the drought, fire, and flood. The "animal bridges" are not right solution. Looking forward for cars replacement by flying personal vehicles and commercial traffic dug underground.
@davidgrieve there's an old British TV programme about the introduction of alcohol driving limits and it's fascinating as a snapshot of what people thought about something which is totally socially unacceptable now.
