Anybody else feeling it? Mastodon becoming essential...?

Mastodon is tiny, yet are we now seeing the vital niche that this nascent open social media platform is beginning to fill?

Today the AoIR, Association of Internet Researchers @AoIR abandons Twitter for Mastodon (https://aoir.org/aoir2023onmastodon/), and EU Commission Vice President Vera Jourova declares Twitter the largest source of #misinformation and #disinformation (https://mastodon.ie/@EugeneMcParland/111132449403615794)...

People are turning to Mastodon...

Does something feel different to you lately?

@mastodonmigration

Honestly, yeah! I just made a post today commenting on how vibrant the gamedev community has been feeling lately! https://hachyderm.io/@CodexArcanum/111133212380115146

Maybe the widespread "enshittification" of the Internet is pushing people from numerous domains to seek open (and future-safe!) alternatives?

I think people are tired of being fucked over, and they're "finding out" it doesn't have to be that way!

I'm so happy Unity decided to self-destruct! I mean, sorry for your losses and all, but... Not only is #Godot getting so much great attention, but I swear it's also driven more devs to Mastodon seeking out experienced #GodotEngine devs to chat with, collab, follow, and learn from! The #gamedev community has felt really lively lately! If you're a gamedev using godot, please say hello in the replies and maybe more folks can find each other to follow!

@CodexArcanum @mastodonmigration I do hope so that people finally realize that only #OpenSource & #MultiVendor / #MultiProvider solutions and standards will survive and live.

That's why #AIM & #ICQ are dead but #IRC & #XMPP alive and well.

That's why #Fax and #eMail are around and why #X400 & #AS2 only exist in their small nieches.

That's why #Joyn failed and died before #MMS and why in the end only #FLOSS & #OpenStandards will survive long-term.

@kkarhan

you know that Joyn rebranded itself into its original protocol name (RCS) and was also called message+?

2016 Google joined and now every Android phone that has Android messages can potentially do RCS (=joyn)

😉

@CodexArcanum @mastodonmigration

@aslmx @CodexArcanum @mastodonmigration Yeah, but nobody uses it and I've yet to see any use case - whereas #MMS was used until most providers in Germany canceled support for it - just like #3G / #GPRS was used wherever #4G / #LTE was unavailable...

@kkarhan

No one uses it on purpose ;)

Some people do not even realize they have actually sent an RCS message...

I am not intending to promote RCS (quite the opposite actually), but since Google joined that club, it has made some progress (towards being unified into one server and one client 😐🤔)...

so it is still alive but rather under the hood and people use 3rd party / OTT messengers most of the time anyways.
