Anybody else feeling it? Mastodon becoming essential...?

Mastodon is tiny, yet are we now seeing the vital niche that this nascent open social media platform is beginning to fill?

Today the AoIR, Association of Internet Researchers @AoIR abandons Twitter for Mastodon (https://aoir.org/aoir2023onmastodon/), and EU Commission Vice President Vera Jourova declares Twitter the largest source of #misinformation and #disinformation (https://mastodon.ie/@EugeneMcParland/111132449403615794)...

People are turning to Mastodon...

Does something feel different to you lately?

Mastodon is the ‘thinking-persons’ choice’ in Social Media.

X Twitter is the media site for all of ‘The Great Unwashed’ or The Rabble’ which used to be fun at times but is now becoming a danger to democracy.

@Aleggra @mastodonmigration @arstechnica @TonyStark I think Bluesky will be the eventual winner. It already feels like the “old” twitter and has more “regular” people put off by some of Mastodon’s rough edges.
@mikec415 @Aleggra @mastodonmigration @arstechnica @TonyStark But how does that work when there's nobody there for the trolls to troll !
@mastodonmigration @arstechnica Sure does. Thanks for your attention to these matters and for shining a light.

Honestly, yeah! I just made a post today commenting on how vibrant the gamedev community has been feeling lately! https://hachyderm.io/@CodexArcanum/111133212380115146

Maybe the widespread "enshittification" of the Internet is pushing people from numerous domains to seek open (and future-safe!) alternatives?

I think people are tired of being fucked over, and they're "finding out" it doesn't have to be that way!

I'm so happy Unity decided to self-destruct! I mean, sorry for your losses and all, but... Not only is #Godot getting so much great attention, but I swear it's also driven more devs to Mastodon seeking out experienced #GodotEngine devs to chat with, collab, follow, and learn from! The #gamedev community has felt really lively lately! If you're a gamedev using godot, please say hello in the replies and maybe more folks can find each other to follow!

@CodexArcanum @mastodonmigration I do hope so that people finally realize that only #OpenSource & #MultiVendor / #MultiProvider solutions and standards will survive and live.

That's why #AIM & #ICQ are dead but #IRC & #XMPP alive and well.

That's why #Fax and #eMail are around and why #X400 & #AS2 only exist in their small nieches.

That's why #Joyn failed and died before #MMS and why in the end only #FLOSS & #OpenStandards will survive long-term.

@kkarhan

you know that Joyn rebranded itself into its original protocol name (RCS) and was also called message+?

2016 Google joined and now every Android phone that has Android messages can potentially do RCS (=joyn)

😉

@CodexArcanum @mastodonmigration

@aslmx @CodexArcanum @mastodonmigration Yeah, but nobody uses it and I've yet to see any use case - whereas #MMS was used until most providers in Germany canceled support for it - just like #3G / #GPRS was used wherever #4G / #LTE was unavailable...

@kkarhan

No one uses it on purpose ;)

Some people do not even realize they have actually sent an RCS message...

I am not intending to promote RCS (quite the opposite actually), but since Google joined that club, it has made some progress (towards being unified into one server and one client 😐🤔)...

so it is still alive but rather under the hood and people use 3rd party / OTT messengers most of the time anyways.

@CodexArcanum @mastodonmigration

@mastodonmigration @AoIR i thought it was just me...😉

@mastodonmigration @AoIR

New accounts are growing at a very strong exponential rate that seemingly has seen growth from under 60,000 accounts in a week to over 100,000 a week, so approaching 15 million total at last count.

No doubt many of these are right wing bots and various scumbags who are real, however, the nature of Mastodon itself pretty much affirms such accounts will never grow to anywhere near the power they have on Twitter and other shitty platforms.

@mastodonmigration @AoIR The problem is keeping the abusive asshole hackers away. What is the maximum amount of bots people can have here? If it's as many as they want, then Mastodon is fucked. We'll at least my time here is. As soon as my cocaine snorting abusers show up, then they will attack me and use their bots to mass report me and force my account to close. Unless you don't allow that type of code to be run. I know there are bots allowed. Do you allow any type of coding to be run using
@mastodonmigration @AoIR your platform? If there are too many reports made against an account in succession, do you take a look at the accounts doing the reports or just allow the non-hacker to be mercilessly attacked by hackers and they get away scott free? Are you like Jack and Twitter where you allow bullying to happen? If the cocaine snorting hackers who attacked me on Twitter stalk me here, disable several accounts, what will be done? Anything? Or will it just be the hacker family bullshit
@mastodonmigration @AoIR like Jack and Twitter would do? Whatever the bullies that caused people to commit suicide wanted to do, they could?
@mastodonmigration @AoIR I don't know how you knew that #AoIR is shifting to here, but thanks for the shout out!
