Sanitize your youtube links!

Stolen from gryphoneer

@itsOasus I actually do this instinctively and have for years now, wish more people would
@Neybulot @itsOasus Same here, there's also browser extensions that do this for you automatically

@Neybulot @itsOasus I do it too, and not just with YT links. It annoys me so much when I copy a shareable URL and it's like domain.com/page?tracker=byebyeprivacy&id=whythehelldoesaurlhavetobethislong

Monster URLs like that are *so* annoying to look at.

@itsOasus Meanwhile on reddit they've taken the next step of making the whole url a tracking string! They have these new /s/ links when sharing from the app. Every post can now have multiple completely different links to it, and the url doesn't contain the actual id of the post. It's probably not great for archival either. I really hope other websites don't copy this "feature"
@vulp @itsOasus tumblr tried doing this for a fortunately-short duration. But they were also *completely broken* when shared. they didn't preview properly, didn't lead to the post, and were just. Bad overall. They stopped that shit Right Quick.

@itsOasus

IMPORTANT:

#Google uses #YouTube links to identify your YT account and link it to others, creating security risks.
The same seems to be the case for #X, #Amazon, #Reddit, and others.

"Why you should delete that?

"...1. You post that link on social media, Google crawler finds it, checks the data base and now it knows this account on other social media belongs to you. ..."

Actually, sanitize *all* the links you use or pass on!

utm_*, gclid, …

There is even a #Firefox #AddOn which does this automatically for you (and also skips some tracking-only redirects):
https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/clearurls/

Update: If you activate "AdGuard URL Tracking Protection" privacy filter in #uBlockOrigin, it will do the filtering as well, just not the redirect-skipping. (h/t @oatmeal)

Laden Sie ClearURLs für Firefox herunter. Entfernt Tracking-Felder aus URLs

@itsOasus i believe there are some browser extention to help with that at least
@itsOasus
@Gargron would an account wide "sanitize links" option be possible in mastodon? Then folks could "set it and forget it."

@itsOasus
Peep this I just found for android.
Intercepts links clicked, you can be sure you are not clicking unwanted query strings with it and sanitize them if they are there.

This Firefox extension has been generally been good for helping me avoid that.

@itsOasus Also joke's on you, I ignore every Youtube link people send me anyway.
@itsOasus there should be browser plugins for this
@itsOasus I can recommend the plugin "Link Cleaner" for Firefox to do it for you. Privacy shouldn't be exhausting

@itsOasus Thanks, integrated in my SyncThing script now. Cleans out all shared YouTube links which appear in Obsidian.
@itsOasus I didn't know about this at all until @taco told/ showed me. I'm glad folks are sharing this info for us less tech/ web savvy folks.
@itsOasus Oh jeez. I'll be sure to fix any links I have. ._. Thanks for sharing!
LB: I actually DL'd my masto archive and went through all my old posts checking to see if I'd left an 'si' parameter on a youtube url. Thank goodness, I didn't. (I normally strip off extra CGI params. Good thing too!) I'd prefer to keep this account separate from my assigned name online identity. Of which it's probably time to go back and delete any recent posts with PII in them
