@mos_8502 america if jimmy Carter second term...
@mos_8502
I think tvtropes once called this the '57 Chevy problem in period pieces: a film set in 1957 needs to have more older cars than new ones.
@Wintermute_BBS
Rocketman’s most annoying scene

Originally noted at NewTumbl, this is the sort of stuff that can annoy me in films.    This is a scene from Rocketman, where Elton John (Taron Egerton) arrives at the Troubador in Los Angeles in 1970. Car people, spot the problems.    If you're like me, you're going: Elton's in a 1978 Lincoln Continental

We constantly forget that there's cultural lag and that lots of people are too poor to constantly change with fashion. And in some cases still like the previous decade's aesthetic.

@Andii @mos_8502

Plus all the stuff handed down from relatives or second hand stores will be from an older aesthetic.

Of course now we can say second hand stuff is 'retro' or 'vintage' but sometimes it's just cheaper.

@mos_8502 Wait till they see the ʼ70s for real!

@jackyan @mos_8502

I prefer the 70ies as depicted in the "Spirit of '77" #ttrpg!

@mos_8502 John Hughes movie vs reality.
@mos_8502 That yellow tint all of our family photos had wasn't because of the film. That's just what everything looked like back then.
@AshleyMarineP @mos_8502 and one reason for that being all adults were smoking cigarettes indoors no matter present minors or food...
@mos_8502 Absolute truth, my 80s were most certainly brown.
@mos_8502 The 80s really were rather brown, weren't they? No wonder all of us young'n's went for neon and pastels.

@mos_8502

Damn straight!

I didn't grow up on a movie set.

@mos_8502 My room in the 80s did have some personality. It was baby blue with matching 101 Dalmatian wallpaper on one side, wood paneling on another, and orange and yellow shag carpet. I definitely didn’t have a bed that big. It was a hand me down twin mattress and frame from a cousin. My sister’s room was similar but it was pink with matching Strawberry Shortcake wallpaper.
@mos_8502 Pshaw, surely every time the year ticks over into a new decade everyone immediately rushes to redecorate and replace all their furniture?

@beecycling @mos_8502

Yes, and eventually they run out of storage space and have to reuse stuff.

@mos_8502 yeah vaporwave is what 2010+ thinks what the 80's thought 2000 would look like.

@mos_8502 honestly I still kinda dig wood paneling. Doesn't feel as sterile as the usual eggshell latex paint on drywall I've seen for the past 20+ years
@mos_8502 yup - drab expanse of brown, as far as the eye could see

@mos_8502

Brown hides the Nicotine.

@mos_8502 I was a teenager in the '80s, and my home was something different. The basement had panelling left over from the 1970s, but my parents had more neutral colours for everything else, aside from my room and my brother's. We chose our own colours, which weren't like the '80s at all. In fact, our rooms were sort of like foreshadowing to the '90s. haha
@mos_8502 the 80s were pretty bad on all sorts of levels. They weren't as bad as the plague ridden neofeudalist dumpsterfire 2020s, but they were still a pretty bad decade

@Njord @mos_8502 Hey, tha 80ies made the ground for the upcoming 90ies....

And at least those weren't as bad imho. ;)

@mos_8502
The 80s were born of the 70s

@mos_8502

left: Japan as weebs imagine

right: actual Japan

@mos_8502 Flashback to the real 80s😀. The wooden panels at the wall and ceiling were terrible.
@mos_8502 the second picture may or may not smell like cigarettes
@mos_8502 This is SO true, I remember the 80s as well as "the time we had practically ZERO money in our pockets", when an icecream was a "Sunday treat" ( and NOT every Sunday ) when it was a DREAM to have a computer at home when the only media was the radio/tv/magazines and we even had absolutely NO PHONE at home ( my grandma had one ) and doing a phone call was someway "exotic".
@mos_8502
My childhood bedroom might not have looked like that ideal 80s esthetic but my clothing damn well did. 😂
@mos_8502 YyyyyyyyyuuuuuuuuP.

The '80s were basically just the '70s but the wood paneling and furniture was a decade older.
@mos_8502 Second pic has a pupper and is thus clearly superior.
@mos_8502 I can smell the cigarette smoke from the carpet.

@mos_8502 The one thing not shown in the actual 80's: The flecked brown ceramic floor tiles. 10"x10".

And the yellow and brown patterned linoleum

Okay, make that two things.

@mos_8502 lol brass and brown everywhere!
@mos_8502
Looks like my 70s walls
@mos_8502 Looks more 60s to me.
@mos_8502 wow yeah if THAT ain't the truth
@mos_8502 This is one of the things that I feel that Stranger Things got completely right
