Huckabee isn't fringe. He was a state governor and a serious presidential candidate.

Canada would be loathe to do that. I live in Bellingham, WA, just south of the Peace Arch crossover. A fair number of people work and live on opposite sides of the border. The commercial traffic is significant between US-Canada. And there are so many other touchpoints.

Not to mention that Canada is a founding member of NATO. No, these politics are ours to solve. Either our electorate protects democracy, or other countries will try to adapt to the new 'us.' They're not going to save us from ourselves...nor should they. As if they could. Even if we plunge ourselves into civil war.

@alexwild Huckabee, like so many, has definitely become radicalized over the years.

I remember campaigning for him in 2008 because he actually seemed somewhat moderate, likable in an "aw shucks" sort of way, not afraid to call Republicans out on policies that hurt the little guy, etc. (I probably was deluded in hindsight…) Now he's full-on MAGA and it's truly heinous.

@jaredwhite The scary thing is, a great many people have radicalized just like Huckabee has. Some are just putting on a show for the grift, or they see it necessary for staying politically afloat. But there are enough true believers with guns to be truly terrifying.

@alexwild NPR had an infuriating ending to its coverage of the sentencing of proud boys leader to 22 years, they basically said, the rest of the proud boys organization has reorganized to change tactics but is still doing basically what they’ve done before in supporting right wing extremism. The sign off after those facts was essentially well there’s nothing we can do about it. WTF.

Decline and collapse is an ugly, painful process. I don’t think it’s inevitable, but it sure feels like America has already stumbled and is very close to being unable to regain its balance. And it’s not even being tackled, it’s just tripping over its own feet.

@alexwild @gocu54 That is pretty disturbing and I was once Republican. It’s so terrible to hear that these people are talking about doing this shit again. But you know what the silver lining is? Since they’re talking about it online, police and security will be far more prepared for this type of thing than if they had said nothing and nothing got out before they had a warning or something before the violence started. They’re screwed if they try anything. Fuck extremism.
