Today in “The Fastest Way To Die” news:
People buying AI written mushroom field guides which is incredibly dangerous.
I can’t believe this has to be said: Don’t risk it.

Instead, why not invest irl Mycology books? You know, written by people who spent years learning how to differentiate between the HIGHLY LETHAL Deathcap from several nontoxic edible species. Or ask a friend with foraging experience to take you which is much safer.

(Edited for clarity.)

Deathcap mushroom - Amanita phalloides

The Deathcap Mushroom - Amanita phalloides, identification, emergency phone number, one of several illustrated pages introducing Australian fungi.

Here are three of my favorite go-to sources of Mycology books written by real Mycologists. Anything by Paul Stamets and Merlin Sheldrake is great. Sheldrake will also be re-releasing #EntangledLife but Illustrated soon.

You can also get foldable guides for super cheap online, or get a free library card for access to free mycology books to have handy when you go foraging.

This guy is adorable. My lucky stars!

Last I checked, he commented on my toot, yet I never asked for their opinion.
He gave me his opinion anyway so I replied. That's how this works, right?

Good on him that he’s foraged safely all of his life, more than likely because he had SOMEONE or multiple someones to teach him. So many don’t even know where to start.

But it is quite entertaining that he felt attacked by common sense, so he blocked me. Extraordinary specimen much?

@Astro_Jmona this causes me huge internal struggle - rotflmao vs sorry for your loss

@GimpyGurl I get it. People want to save couple of bucks.

What if I told you that it can be done by not just getting a well written book by a professional but also support their work which can be the abysmal difference between life and death? I’m just saying.

@Astro_Jmona you are so right about tough place to choose to save a buck - what do they say, the cheap pay twice?
@GimpyGurl and you get what you pay for. 🤷‍♀️
@Astro_Jmona Every mushroom is edible. Just not all of them twice.

@Astro_Jmona I know someone who was a lifelong forager who regularly read on mushrooms, and would go on walks to find them, sometimes eating as she went.

She misidentified one, and was found dead several days after going missing.

@positronrelay I’m incredibly sorry to hear that. I’m no mycologist, I stick to picking what I can identify. If I cannot identify what I picked, my microscope can help identifying the spores, or I choose not to include it, but mostly pick from areas I know of, and species I’m familiarwith that are safe to consume. Growing gourmet at home is super easy nowadays as well.
@Astro_Jmona Yeah. It's definitely a dumb way to die, but it's also an understandable one. Familiarity breeds complacency at the least, and as my uncle puts it, "I've never been bit by a brand new saw, but I've been bit several times by the one I've owned for 15 years."
@Astro_Jmona these books often appear at first glance to BE mycology books. They are not just ebooks - you can find them in print. They may be distributed to your local bookshops as well. People who are not experts in the subjects literally won't know enough to tell the generated books from the real ones.

@nikolawannabe True. That is why it is suggested they find someone to teach them how to do it properly. There is safety in numbers! When in doubt, ask someone who can help.

There are groups online you can meet locally that do these things as well. Mushrooms, herbs foraging, identifying plants, grasses/weeds, etc., and even amateur astronomy.

It can be done, you just have to know where to look!

@Astro_Jmona absolutely agree with you about the dangers of AI mushroom field guides.
@Astro_Jmona People do this? Don't they know about libraries?

@OShaqHennessey Unfortunately.

With Libby is as easy as 1, 2 & 3.
You can sign up online through the app or through your library sites. Requirements:
1. Do you have an email?
2. If yes, get the app.
3. Choose the library you want a card from. Most libraries nowadays don’t even require you to come in for verification. They just ask for your DOB/Zipcode.
If you are a CA resident, you automatically qualify for all state and Federal libraries/archives and can start borrowing books immediately. 🤷‍♀️
